I see rumours that air bases can only be used to supply fuel by air drops if located within 5 MPs of a railhead, however I cannot find anything in the manual to confirm this rumour, nor as it happens anything about air base supply requirements to suggest they are any different to other units.

Can anybody confirm the rumour or supply a manual reference to explain whether air bases draw supply the same as other units?

In other words, does the 5/20 to the unit's HQ or, failing that, the 25/100 railhead rule apply to air bases?

I have always delayed moving air bases forward until my railhead repair constructs a clear line to a position where the air units can be properly used, thinking that the bases themselves need to be within 5 MPs of an active railhead. In any case I usually avoid moving HQs and air bases unless necessary to avoid using up the motor pool. This has left me seriously short of air support in the first couple of months of the full campaign.

Help please!

You have to look at the amended manual:

v1.06.22 - November 29, 2012
Air transport missions may only be flown by air groups that are located on airbases within 5 MPs of a supply source (rail net).

Aha, thanks, the one I downloaded onto the iPad must be the original manual!

Can anyone respond to the other points?

Yes, Airbases are supplied the same as other units through their Air HQs.

I don't know, in my current game my German counterpart say his air transport will only fly if the airbases are on a supply line. We are playing version 1.07. I wonder if anyone is having this problem?

Air Supply is tricky. For example if you have two AB stacked together and one AB has already flown Supply missions, they other might not until you move the used AB to another hex. There are many foibles of Air Supply.

I think it would be more realistic, if the relevant air HQ had to perform a supply build up prior to the supply missions of the attached air groups. And of course it should be limitted to the transport units only. The loses of the transports due to the AA and enemy fighters should be much higher and the system should also reflect the notorious inaccuracy of the air drops during the WW2.
