So I'm minding my own business, finally getting a game to go on consistently for some time now without starting over, when all of a sudden war breaks out EVERYWHERE practically everybody is at war, Seeing as I haven't played a game this far in is this part of the story line or has everyone gone nuts and everybody is trying to kill one another?

i have had a world war one hid me hard because of mutual defense pacts.
every one was allied with everyone but then a war started and every one had to choose a side. ended up at war with half the galaxy while the empires i was at war with still liked me enough to tech trade.
that was a fun game.

Yeah practically, there were 2-3 alliances (mutual defensive pacts and/or protectorates) and, one douchebag(usually insectoid or dhayut) got bored and thought he should start a war with someone from a different alliance.
This probably started a chain reaction of war declarations.

But what do you have against wars anyway? They're the heart of the game :)

Once Empires expand and fill the map there are more wars as they start to covet resources so it's pretty normal as the game evolves.

For a laugh in one game I reduced all the biases file settings (i.e. propensity to like/dislike) so that every race hated every other race. Then I set Chaos Aggression. I didn't want to wait for the fur to fly so made it a small galaxy with plenty of mature empires. Can't say I played that again though as I like a bit of both.

Limit cases aside, if you set Aggression to Chaos, war is obviously more likely. And if you want more wars yourself without the galaxy going nuts, you can change the biases file so that other races like you less (again credit to Darkspire for suggesting that a while back).
