There are a number of little things I am unclear about, and instead of making fifty different posts I thought I would just put them here as I recall or encounter them.

Currently, I am curious as to what the meaning of a large red arrow between my home system and a newly conquered one is.

Thanks

Stormy - I believe what you are seeing are projected flight paths of ships either civilian or military (don't recall which one) but you can check this by toggling the map buttons in the lower right corner.

Will post one myself-

Playing as the humans who begin on a Continental Planet - what is the point of researching "Colonization -Continental Planet"? Shouldn't it be researched already? If so, why should I have to research it to get to desert colonization?

By researching continental colonization, you can colonize those worlds with ANY population you control. If, for example, you find a Securan ship (lost/abandoned discovery) - it is only able to colonize desert planets without any tech. If you have continental done, you can drop them on a continental world.

I think there's a population growth bonus as well, but I've seen some confusing posts on this.

Here is a screenie, I don't think that is what you are talking about.

That red arrow looks like the path to the defined attack target for one of your attack fleets. See Fleet Postures in the Fleets topic in the Galactopedia for more details.

Note that you can also see red dashed lines/arrows when you select a base or colony. The lines show all ships currently en route to the selected item, e.g. freighters travelling to spaceport. To see these lines you must have the ship travel vector overlays turned on (above minimap).

Thanks
Elliot

You must research it before you can trade this tech. Although your race can inherently colonize this planet type, without fully understanding it you cannot teach anyone else how to colonize Continental planets - that's the rationale anyway

Elliot, there are no hostile forces in that system, and the only fleets that call the 'sending' system home have no missions. There are no attack targets. Toggling fleet posture does remove the arrow... but there is no fleet attacking that system, and nothing to attack there anyway.

A bug?

Don't forget also with colonization research that if your native planet is something other than Continental or Swamp researching it increases the growth rate of the previous planet type. Of course if the native planet type is continental or swamp then you'll want to research it just to open up the extra two planet types to lie past it.

Some mods may also have set the native planet type for races to a lower research cost as this is now an option for modders. Though this isn't the case in vanilla.

Edit: On the arrow thing, I don't know what it is but I've noticed it pop up occasionally for me when I've had a fleet or ship heading to the destination and I click on empty space and deselect them. It always seems to be linked to the last thing I had selected.
