Reposted from The War Room:

Two games in a row now, one Classic, one Shadows, my homeworld has been hit by an earthquake, and had its quality dropped 30 points, maybe more. Once this happens, despite the world quality raising back up to 100, and tax rates being set, the world never again provides revenue. Given that the homeworlds are the biggest single income source, this has financially crippled my efforts in both games.

Has anyone else experienced this, and is it just a matter of time till the planet starts pumping out money again, or is something else going on?

Hi, did you try researching the tech terraforming(please correct me if this is the wrong word). I think it gradually raises the planet quality after a while.

I've found that the best way to make money and grow planets is to lower the tax rate as much as possible. Put your other plans on hold, sell whatever fleets and armies you can, and then drop your tax rate as low as you can afford, all the way to 0 is best. Your population growth will spike and after a few years you'll be back to maxed population. Then you can set a 50% or 60% tax rate and roll in dough. This strategy will also get brand new colonies up to maxed population and profitability relatively quickly.

Yeah, lowering the taxes to 0% will definetly help in getting the population up fast. Especially when you have a new colony.
I have never tried raising the tax rate at my homeworld to 60% though. Dont the population there revolt??

Not at the settings I'm using, just keep an eye on it because you're pushing it right to the edge. If a disaster strikes or your spaceport goes down you'll find your homeworld has rebelled. This is interesting unless it's your only planet, in which case you get to see what it's like to lose.
