Combat

Vigan was occupied by the Allies

The SS Shad tried to attack a TK 78 miles SW of Pontianak, but the escorts detected and drove her off.

The SS Angler, 84 miles NW of Hakodate, was attacked by 3 PCs after the sub obliterated a PC with 3 torpedo hits. Later 4 X PC tried to locate the sub, but failed to do so. The Angler has been beat up enough to call an end to her patrol and now with light systems damage she'll make for a yard for repairs.

The SS Sealion hit an AK with 2 torpedoes 97 miles SE of Saigon. The target sank and the 2 MSWs escorting the stricken vessel couldn't locate the sub.

Toyama was bombed by 240 X B-29 and 2 Franks and 6 Tonys tried to stop them. A Frank and 4 Tonys were damaged and the AA fire along with the fighters damaged 4 bombers. The heavy industry was extremely heavily damaged.

Niigata's heavy industry took extremely heavy damage from 190 X B-29. 15 X Frank and the flak damaged 23 of the big birds while 3 Franks were destroyed and 9 damaged.

Toyohara was hit by 11 X A-26B, 22 X P-51Dand 40 X P-38J for light port damage.

Takao was targeted by 22 X B-25J (1 downed, 11 damaged) for moderate airfield damage, a secondary explosion and moderate casualties.

Rabaul was hit by 5 X Liberator VI for extremely light airfield damage.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division had moderate losses from and Allied air raid.

The IJN DD near Hong Kong was targeted by 3 X PB4Y who ran into 15 X Zeke, 1 X George, 13 X Jack and 3 X Tony. All of the bombers were damaged and a Jack was downed 1 damaged and a Zeke was also damaged. The ship was unharmed. Another strike came on made up of 20 X PB4Y and 20 X P-51D. 5 Zekes (1 damaged), 7 Jacks and 2 Tonys were splashed in return for a Mustang lost and 1 damaged. AA fire damaged 11 bombers who attacked 3 DDs, hitting 1 with a bomb that started a fire.

A Mary tried to attack the Allied TF 23 miles E of Taipei, but 241 X F6F and 19 X F4U-1D were on station and the Mary blew up in midair. Then 11 X Mary tried and lost 4 planes with the rest of them running. Next up were 3 X Judy who were splashed. In the afternoon 24 X Grace tried to penetrate the CAP and all were shot down with 4 Hellcats being damaged. 5 X Mary tried and 3 were downed with 2 running.

The Allied ships unloading at Taichu were under a CAP of 49 X F6F and 10 X P-38J when 7 Bettys appeared. The Bettys were all destroyed and a pair of Hellcats were damaged.

At Naga the usual results from the artillery barrages were on order. The Allies had no losses and the Japanese had heavy casualties.

“Jay get your tail moving, unless you want to walk to our new area of responsibility,” says Sarge. Like all good soldiers Jay grumbles as he collects his gear , walks over to the waiting deuce and a half, tosses his gear up to his waiting squad members and climbs up. He flops down on the bench looking across at a smiling pal who says something about how Jay's ass will be numb from the comfortable bench before they arrive at wherever it is the Army wants them.

Chris flew a CAP patrol in the morning and another one in the late afternoon. He doesn't mind the patrols, but he hates it when his plane is spotted on the carrier and he's waiting to race to the cockpit and takeoff as fast as he can for the emergency that never seems to come. He knows that it's the smart thing to do, but the Japanese haven't been able to penetrate the CAP yet, or at least as far as he knows.

“So I've got it on good sources that this man's war will never end,” says Brownie. He continues with, “The Japanese won't surrender and we can't fly because of all of the lousy weather so an invasion of Japan will be needed. I took us almost 4 years to advance half way across the Pacific and the Japanese still hold most of China, Malaya and the Dutch East Indies. That means that in about 10 years we should be able to control Japan, after having to kill them all.” The Lucky 11 look at one another laugh and throw stuff at Brownie who screams, “WHAT?”

Combat

Toyohara was attacked by Allied planes, 1 A-26B damaged, who missed the target.

Takao was hit by 7 X B-25J (1 downed, 3 damaged) for very light airfield damage and light casualties.

Tavoy was visited by 64 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged), 59 X B-25J, 25 X Thunderbolt II and 7 X Spitfire VIII who did heavy damage to the airstrip, triggered a large number of secondary explosions and there were light personnel losses. Another raid made up of 44 X B-25J (9 damaged) and 19 X Spitfire VIII added moderate damage to the airfield, some secondary explosions and light casualties.

Bangkok was bombed by 106 X Liberator VI (1 downed, 24 damaged). A Zeke was in the air, but the pilot decided, wisely, not to try his luck today. The port was heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions, some of which were fuel and casualties were extremely heavy.

Manila was bombed by 121 X B-24J (2 damaged) for very heavy airfield damage, a secondary explosion and heavy troop losses.

Clark Field was identified as being active so 94 X B-24D (19 damaged), 48 X B-17E (9 damaged) and 86 X P-38J came a calling. The airfield was very heavily damaged, there were a few secondary explosions, 11 X Grace, 3 X Betty, 1 X Helen and 1 X Frank were destroyed and casualties were heavy. Another wave of bombers arrived with 72 X B-24J adding heavy damage to the airfield, a Betty and a Helen were trashed and losses were moderately heavy.

Rabaul was visited by 9 X Liberator VI who did negligible damage to the airstrip.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division suffered moderately heavy losses from an air raid.

The 16th Chinese Corps, 89 miles NW of Hengchow, was jumped by 10 X Ann, 9 X Sonia, 9 X Nick and 5 X Oscar for very light casualties.

The Japanese ships near Tainan were attacked by 3 X PB4Y, but 9 X George and 9 X Frank were there. A Liberator went down and 1 was damaged while a George was damaged. The ships weren't harmed. Later 11 X PB4Y and 42 X P-51D attacked the Japanese ships. 5 X George and 4 X Franks tried to stop the attack only to lose 3 Georges and 2 Franks. 9 X bombers and a Mustang were damaged. A DD was hit by a bomb.

The Japanese ships near Wenchow were attacked by 26 X SBD, 18 X TBF, 21 X F4U-1D, 83 X F6F, 48 X FM-2 and 3 X F4F-4. A PG was hit by 7 bombs and that doomed the vessel.

The Japanese ships near Hong Kong were attacked by 20 X PB4Y and 40 X P-51D. 1 X George, 12 X Jack and 1 X Tony gave battle and lost 9 Jacks. 11 bombers and a Mustang were damaged while what was thought to have been the CL Jintsu was hit by a bomb.

The Allied ships 31 miles SE of Wenchow were attacked by 3 X Grace and the CAP splashed them. Then 11 X Judy, 3 X Grace and 5 X Peggy tried to reach the carriers. A Judy lived to tell of the carnage and a Hellcat was damaged. Later 2 Judys appeared and ran when the Allied fighters arrived. A Judy died and the other survived somehow.

35 miles W of Manila 4 X Betty, 17 X Zeke and 29 X Frank attacked the Allied ships only to see all of the Bettys destroyed by AA fire.

The Allied ships near Bataan were under the cover of 12 X Mustang when 3 X Betty, 3 X Zeke and 3 X Frank showed up. 3 Bettys, a Zeke and 2 Franks were flamed in return for a damaged Mustang.

At Naga the Japanese artillery was ineffective and the Allied shellings inflicted heavy casualties.

Chris lets them know that his engine was running hot and the mechanics tell him that they'll check it out. He wonders if the poor mechanics ever get any sleep as the aircraft operations have been relentless.

Another mission, weather permitting, will be flown over Japan tomorrow. Gil spends time writing letters home and to Elaine after chow. After that he takes a walk with the rest of the guys and their sister crew.

Despite it being Friday Gene knows that he'll be lucky to leave the office by 8 or 9 tonight and that maybe, with luck, he'll take off on Sunday. He finally shook things up a bit by letting go 2 engineers who only knew how to say “that won't work” without even giving it a go. Now the rest of the people on the project realize that even if they're leery of some idea they had better investigate further and if it shows the least bit of promise they'll try it out. Gene doesn’t care that he's not liked. Maybe in the future when the others are more into the project things will change, but for now at least he's gotten the message through to them.

Combat

The SS Runner, hit a TK with a torpedo that started a fire and then the 5 PCs escorting the tanker pounded the sub 26 miles SE of Haiphong. The sub now has moderate systems damage and heavy flooding. She will try to make it to a friendly port, but all depends on some luck.

In an attempt at a night time raid 5 IJN PTs were intercepted 27 miles E of the Pescadores by an Allied TF of a BB, CA, CL and 6 DDs. One of the USN DDs was the O'Bannon, who acquitted herself well. A PT got away and the others were sunk. No harm befell the Allied ships thanks to their radar. The other PT was caught and destroyed once the sun came up and it couldn't hide in the ground clutter that confused the radar.

34 miles W of the Pescadores the SS Redfin was attacked by 4 IJN DDs who managed to do no harm to the sub.

Toyohara was raided by 12 X A-26B, 3 X P-51D and 12 X P-38J who caused a couple of secondary explosions, one of which was fuel and there were negligible casualties.

Sapporo was bombed by 61 X B-24D (1 downed, 4 damaged), 19 X P-51D and 35 X P-38J for light damage to the heavy industry.

Tavoy was tagged by 62 X Mosquito FB.VI, 60 X B-25J (4 damaged), 24 X Thunderbolt II and 7 X Spitfire VIII for heavy airfield damage, a few secondary explosions and light personnel losses. Another strike of 47 X B-25J (4 damaged) and 21 X Spitfire VIII added moderate damage to the airstrip and a couple of secondary explosions.

Bangkok's port was hit by 134 X Liberator VI (29 damaged) for very heavy damage, a very large number of secondary explosion, many of which were fuel and heavy casualties.

Clark Field was struck by 15 X B-17E (7 damaged), 35 X B-24D (1 downed, 11 damaged) and 8 X P-38J. The airfield was heavily damaged, a secondary explosion was seen, 5 Bettys, 3 Franks and 12 Graces were destroyed and troop losses were moderate.

10 X Ann, 9 X Sonia, 5 X Oscar and 4 X Nick hit the 16th Chinese Corps, 90 miles NW of Hengchow for moderate casualties.

The IJN TF near the Pescadores was attacked by 14 X TBM (10 damaged), 6 X F4U-1D, 24 X FM-2 and 3 X F4F-4. A DD was hit by 2 torpedoes, sinking it. Another attack was made by 10 X TBF (10 damaged), 9 X TBM (9 damaged), 9 X F4U-1D, 13 X F6F Hellcat, 54 X FM-2 and 7 X F4F-4 and they hit nothing.

5 Bettys tried to attack the Allied ships near Taichu and the CAP splashed them all while 4 Hellcats were damaged. Another 3 Bettys tried and died and a Hellcat was damaged. Then 3 Peggys were shot down in a vain attempt and 2 Hellcats were damaged.

39 miles E of Taipei 3 Graces tried to attack the Allied ships only to be destroyed by the CAP which had a Hellcat damaged.

28 miles SE of Hong Kong 14 X B-25J (2 downed, 5 damaged), 4 X P-51D and 2 X P-38J fed 2 DDs a bomb each that caused fires on both ships. The SS Steelhead was alert and managed to hit a DD with a fish that caused a fire to erupt. After reloading the sub tried and failed to hit another DD.

An IJN BB thought to be the Fuso was attacked 227 miles NW of San Marcelino 18 X B-25J (1 downed, 13 damaged), 25 X P-51D and 17 X P-38J Lightning. Pilots claimed 4 bomb hits.

The SS Hake hit a TK with 3 torpedoes 78 miles W of Masan. There were fires and heavy damage and the 3 PCs hunted in vain for the sub.

At Naga Japanese artillery continued to fail in it's mission. The Japanese did have very heavy losses from the Allied artillery.

Jay squats down in his new hole quickly learning that the Japanese shellings in this area are as ineffective as they were in his last spot on the line. He tries to take some comfort from this, but between the constant being wet and the awful lack of sleep he knows that he's back in hell again.

Frank was very pleased with the O'Bannon's performance today against the enemy PT boats. His ship threw out a curtain of shells and was credited with a kill and a partial on another boat. The radar man confided in him later that he had one hell of a time trying to pick the Japanese craft out from the land mass behind them. Frank patted the man on the shoulder and told him to keep up the good work.

LT Kurt Wirth quietly watches the boisterous card game going on and swings his head to the other side of the hold that is crammed with stacks of racks for the men and sees a crap game going on. Of course the crap game is much noisier, but he's not a gambler so he just lays back in his rack and reads a book. It's been a while since he actually had the joy of flying a plane and he misses time aloft in a Mustang. Eventually he'll reach his unit as a replacement.

Chris flew a couple of CAPs today and once more didn't see a Japanese plane. Landing was an adventure due to lousy weather, a pitching and rolling flight deck and strong, gusting cross winds. He managed to catch the 2 wire and everybody is figuring that any wire is a good wire on a day like today. Sadly more that one plane managed to have an accident on landing.

Combat

The SS Grayback was attacked by 4 DDs 26 miles E of the Pescadores, but she avoided any damage by diving deep.

The SS Harder, 92 miles S of Hungnam, attacked and hit a lone AK with a torpedo setting it on fire and the ship suffered heavy damage. Hours later the Harder attacked another unescorted AK and hit it with the deck gun 5 times and with 3 torpedoes, sinking her.

About 22 miles N of Taichu 4 Japanese DDs tangled with a CA and 7 DDs with the following results.
Japanese
DD Chidori 11 shell hits, sunk
DD Manazuru 7 shell hits, sunk
DD Otori 1 shell hit, 1 torpedo hit, sunk
DD Kamo 12 shell hits, 1 torpedo hit, sunk
DD Ammen 1 shell hit
Allied
DD Capps 1 shell hit
The Allied TF was attacked by 6 X Frances and flak claimed 3 of them and the survivors' fish missed. Then another raid of 17 X Frances came on and 1 was downed, 15 damaged. Once again the torpedoes dropped missed the twisting and turning ships.

Allied troops unloading over beach at Sabang sustained extremely heavy casualties.

An ASW attack 14 miles E of Takao on an IJN sub claimed a couple of hits and drove the sub off before she could launch any fish on the ships. Another ASW attack on a sub was mounted later and another hit was claimed. It was unknown, but suspected that this was the same submarine. What might have been the same sub mounted an attack in the afternoon and hit the CVE Hollandia with a torpedo that caused a fire. The escorts attacked the contact and claimed many hits. 2 X Grace were destroyed by the CAP covering the Allied TF. Another attack by 14 X Grace had 9 aircraft destroyed and the rest ran, an FM-2 was damaged. The CVE Hollandia has moderately heavy systems damage, moderate flooding and of the utmost concern moderate fires that must be brought under control. A DE was detached to escort the stricken ship to the closest available port, Taichu. Members of the crew were taken off and only volunteer damage control parties remain aboard. Of note all of the damage control personnel were volunteers and other crew members filled the gaps left by the dead and wounded. Captain A E Minyard noted in the log book that his crew has never made him prouder than today by their heroic actions under such adverse circumstances. There is no mention of the fact that despite his wounds Hollandia's skipper has stayed with her.

Hamamatsu was swept by 71 X P-51D who jumped 27 X Zeke. In the lopsided fight 18 Zekes were shot down. Then 30 X B-29 (2 damaged) appeared and hit the Nakajima engine factory for light damage. Another strike of 141 X B-29 (2 damaged) arrived and they did moderate damage to the heavy industry.

Toyohara was hit by 14 X A-26B (2 damaged), 22 X P-51D and 39 X P-38J for a couple of secondary explosions and very light personnel losses.

Aomori had it's heavy industry take moderate damage from 177 X B-29 (7 damaged).

Rabaul was struck by 12 X Liberator VI for light airfield damage.

At Gili Gili the South Seas Det. Suffered very heavy losses from an Allied air attack.

The IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade at Clark Field was pounded by 32 X B-24J (11 damaged) for moderate casualties.

The 16th Chinese Corps 88 miles NW of Hengchow had moderate losses from a Japanese air attack.

The Japanese ships near Hong Kong were being protected by 15 X Zeke, 1 X George, 7 X Jack and 1 Tony when 22 X PB4Y and 54 X P-51D arrived on the scene. 3 Zekes, 1 George and 7 Jacks were splashed while a Mustang went down. The AA fire damaged a Liberator while they dropped their loads on 2 DDs.
DD Fujinami 6 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
DD Tamanami 5 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage

The Allied TF near Sabang was under a CAP of 18 X Hellcat II and 37 X Corsair IV when 6 Bettys arrived and they were promptly shot down. Then 8 X Peggy and 2 X Zeke arrived on the scene only to be destroyed. A Corsair went down and 6 were damaged. 31 Bettys then attacked and 29 were splashed as 2 Hellcats, 9 Corsairs (1 destroyed) were damaged and a Firefly went down. Another 3 Bettys were then caught and killed. In another raid 3 X Betty had 1 destroyed and the others ran. A Hellcat was damaged, a Corsair went down and another was damaged. Next up were 18 X Frances and 9 X Betty who were all downed save 4 of the Frances who ran. A Hellcat, 4 Corsairs and a Firefly were damaged. 5 X Betty then tried and 1 was downed and another damaged as was a Hellcat before the survivor ran.

The Allied TF 17 miles N of Sabang was attacked by 15 X Peggy and 4 X Zeke who ran into 32 X Hellcat II, 55 X Corsair IV and 15 X Firefly. All of the Japanese planes were destroyed at a cost of 6 Hellcats, 2 Corsairs and 4 Fireflys damaged. 3 X Betty then made the attempt and were killed with 2 Corsairs taking damage. An attack was then made by 36 X Frances, 12 X Betty and 16 X Zeke and the CAP downed all of the Japanese planes while 2 Hellcats (4 damaged) were shot down and 13 Corsairs and 2 Fireflys were damaged.

The Allied ships 88 miles S of Tainan were attacked by 2 Bettys who were both shot down by AA fire.

3 X Grace attacked the Allied TF 24 miles E of Taipei and were all splashed by the 12 X FM-2 on CAP.

3 X Peggy tried an attack on the Allied ships near Taichu and were destroyed by the CAP of 53 X F6F and 25 X P-38J.

The Allied TF 29 miles E of Wengchow was attacked by 14 X Judy and all were splashed by 23 X P-38J. 6 X Frances then tried and 2 died while the others turned tail and ran. Then 18 X Helen tried to pierce the CAP and were destroyed. Another strike of 9 X Frances and 3 X Peggy came on and 2 X Frances (5 damaged) and 3 X Peggy were shot down. 2 Lightnings were damaged in the fight.

The SS Moray, 78 miles SE of Hue, attacked a TK and hit it with a fish setting it on fire. The PG and 6 PCs then found her and attacked. The sub will now curtail her patrol as she has light systems damage and very light flooding.

The Allied troops had extremely light losses from the Japanese artillery barrage at Naga while they suffered heavily from the Allied shelling.

Truman puts down the report, takes off his glasses and rubs his temples. He has made up his mind and the A-bomb will be used. Although there isn't one deployed yet it's only a matter of time. Everything he's been told points that this weapon could actually save live, both American and Japanese.

Stalin demands that the units redeployed to the East be moved as quickly as possible to where they will do the most good. Harbin sticks out like a sore thumb and he wants to be able to deal with it when the time comes. He wonders if the Japanese will attack him before he's ready. He feels that the conflict is inevitable.

Sam has managed to muddle through another day. He looks at Frankie and says, “If it weren't for you I don't know what I'd do.” The dog sits there looking at him and Sam wonders if dogs can really understand people.

Sandy got some letters from Bill today and she's reading through them a second time when Dave comes into the house. During dinner the talk about post war and what changes it'll bring.

Combat

Allied troops continued unloading over beach at Sabang taking heavy casualties. The RN bombarded Sabang with 3 X BB, 2 X CA, 1 X CL and 5 X DD who inflicted moderate damage to the airfield, heavy damage to the port, an extremely large number of secondary explosions were observed and personnel losses were placed at moderate. The 81st Naval Guard Unit was struck by 34 X Barracuda, 13 X Hellcat II, 21 X Corsair IV and 14 X Firefly for light casualties. Sabang was captured when the Allied assault swept the Japanese defenders away with heavy losses while taking moderate casualties themselves. The defeated Japanese retreated towards Kuala.

27 miles NW of Sakashima an IJN sub was attacked by a DD and 3 DEs who claimed many hits and a kill was awarded when an oil slick and debris was spotted.

Taytay was bombarded by the IJN with 2 X BB, 1 X CA and 2 X CL. The airstrip had negligible damage, the port had moderate damage and there were some secondary explosions. The AVD and PBMs that were there had departed last night as this TF had been tracked by recon planes and subs.

Toyohara suffered light port damage from 8 X A-26B and 17 X P-51D.

Gili Gili was hit by 12 X Liberator VI, 4 X Kittyhawk III and 9 X Spitfire VIII for light airstrip damage and a secondary explosion.

At Clark Field the IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade was bombed by 18 X B-24J (10 damaged) for light losses.

The 16th Chinese Corps 91 miles NW of Hengchow had negligible casualties from an air raid.

A pair of Japanese AKs 251 miles SW of Hong Kong were attacked by 7 X PB4Y and 16 X P-51D. 1 AK was hit by 3 bombs for heavy damage and fires.

At Naga the Allies had negligible losses due to Japanese shellings while the Allied artillery dished out moderate casualties to the Japanese.

At Dadjangas the Palawan rides at anchor awaiting orders.

Rain and tiredness are keeping the Lucky 11 grounded for now. The mechanics are busy trying to get the planes ready for the next attack and the big machines are showing fatigue.

Bill reads the reports from all of the sections and engineering is worrisome. After a couple of high speed runs the ship's engines are in need of work that can't be done at sea. This is nothing new as the Navy expects the difficult to be done as a routine and the impossible with a little extra effort. He knows that his crew are doing all they can and then some and that will have to do for now.

Jay is in a state of shock. The next hole to his right took a direct hit today and the men were torn to shreds. The Japanese never hurt anybody with their artillery and now this happened. He ponders his luck thinking how close he came. Slowly he becomes aware that nothing is protecting him except for luck and that eventually it'll run out. He becomes resigned to the fact that if the war doesn't finish soon they'll all be dead.

Combat

A Dauntless spotted an AK about 82 miles E of Wenchow and claimed a hit.

The SS Tautog was patrolling 238 miles E of Camranh Bay when she encountered 2 AKs and 5 MSWs. She hit an AK with a torpedo that caused a fire to start.

152 NW of Jesselton the SS S-42 stumbled across the path of a CL and 5 DDs which she managed to evade before their attack could result in fatal damage.

The SS Stingray, 21 miles E of Camranh Bay, discovered a lone TK and raked it with no less that 10 hits from the deck gun and 2 torpedoes that combined to inflict heavy damage.

Gumma was targeted by 50 P-51D on a sweep and 21 X Zeke, 15 X Shinden and 30 X Tony were up for a fight. 6 Mustangs were shot down and 14 Zekes, 6 X Shinden and 23 Tonys were splashed. The strike of 214 X B-29 arrived under escort by 32 X P-51D and 7 X Zeke, 9 X Shinden and 1 X Tony tried to turn the attackers away. 2 Zekes (2 damaged), 2 Shindens (1 damaged) and the Tony were shot down at the cost of the loss of 3 Mustangs and another damaged. AA fire damaged 12 of the bombers who did very little damage to the armaments factory.

Kendari was raided by 143 X A-26B (6 damaged) and 30 X B-24J (1 downed, 1 damaged) for heavy airfield damage, moderately heavy port damage, a very large number of secondary explosions were claimed and casualties were placed at moderate.

Naga was struck by 50 X A-26B (2 downed, 10 damaged), 49 X B-25J (12 damaged) and 67 X P-38J for heavy airfield damage, a very large number of secondary explosions and moderately heavy personnel losses. Another strike of 42 X A-26B (2 damaged) and 54 X P-38J arrived and added moderate damage to the airstrip, a few secondary explosions were observed and casualties were moderate. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade had moderate losses from 11 X B-25J (3 damaged) and 20 X F4U-1D. Artillery exchanges left the Allied forces unharmed and the Japanese absorbed very heavy casualties.

Manila was hit by 29 X B-24D and 17 X P-38J for light port damage, some secondary explosions and moderate troop losses. Afterward another 96 B-24J (1 damaged)) arrived and they did light damage to the port, some secondary explosions and casualties were moderate.

Clark Field was attacked by 33 X B-24J (1 downed, 14 damaged) for moderate airfield damage and heavy losses. Another 15 X B-24D (7 damaged) arrived and they added light damage to the airfield and moderate casualties.

At Gili Gili 12 X Liberator VI and 9 X Spitfire VIII did moderate airstrip damage and a couple of secondary explosions. Then the South Seas Det. Suffered very heavy losses from 52 X A-26B, 44 X Mosquito FB.VI and 4 X Kittyhawk III.

The Allied ships unloading at Sabang were under a CAP of 28 X Hellcat II, 15 X Corsair IV and 8 X P-47D when 3 Peggys and 2 Zekes appeared. All of the Japanese planes were shot down.

The Allied ships 24 miles N of Sabang were attacked by 3 X Peggy who were destroyed by the 28 X Hellcat II, 118 X Corsair IV, 10 X Firefly and 5 X P-47D on CAP duty. A Thunderbolt was damaged. 6 X Peggy and 12 X Zeke then tried and were splashed with a Hellcat and 2 Corsairs being damaged.

An attack 97 miles SW of Hong Kong was made by the SS Haddo on a lone AK. She hit her target with 2 fish causing the ship to break up and sink.

Allied forces attacked and captured a vacated Lingayen.

“So after slogging our way over half the island of Formosa the ever loving Corps is going to allow us to use our unique skills to assault and capture Takao tomorrow,” says Slim to his lads. He didn't mention that there are additional units involved besides the 2nd Marine Division.. An Army Infantry Division, 2 artillery units and a tank destroyer Bn are joining in the attack.

Jay listens to the distant rumble of artillery, happy in the knowledge that today nobody seems interested in his little corner of hell. As a precaution the platoon shifted it's position during the night and the guys didn't mind having to dig new holes at all.

Ed and his staff are going over plans for the next operation and the focus is on munitions and fuel. It always come down to the logistics, thinks Ed. Only a fool would ignore this and leave it totally to the whims of others. “I don't want enough for the anticipated demands that will be made on us. I want more. Lots more. If there's one thing we can count on it's that plans will swiftly change once things begin to roll.

Combat

The SS Stingray ventured into the waters of Camranh Bay and was rewarded with an attack on an unescorted TK, which she hit with a torpedo that sank it.

Naga was bombed by 34 X B-17E (2 damaged) and 79 X P-38J for light airfield damage and a secondary explosion. Another raid of 22 X B-25J (6 damaged), 18 X A-26B (3 damaged) and 26 X P-38J did moderate airfield damage, a couple of secondary explosions and light casualties. Artillery barrages from both sides produced no Allied losses and heavy Japanese casualties.

Manila's port was targeted by 29 X B-24D (4 damaged) and 9 X P-38J for moderate damage, a couple of secondary explosions were observed and personnel losses were moderate.

Clark Field was hit by 19 X B-24J (2 downed, 14 damaged) for light airstrip damage, a secondary explosion, a Zeke and a Frank were trashed and casualties were light.

Gili Gili had light airfield damage from an air raid.

An Allied assault on Takao's defenses cost both sides very heavily and the attackers gained some ground. Bill stares at his orders and is dumbfounded that they will move to a smaller sized port without a yard. How the hell is he ever going to get the Mighty Mo back in fighting shape?

Dave and Sandy go into town for a solemn observance of Memorial Day. Sandy finds it very unsettling, especially with Bill somewhere doing whatever the Navy bids.

Pete and Sylvia left the doctor's office having had good news that Pearl is a “healthy young lady.” As they walk back to the hotel to prepare for the evening's customers Pearl starts crying and Syl laughs saying, “A real live Princess, she is. A demanding little so and so.” Pete has a chuckle and gives Syl a peck on her cheek telling her that's for the Queen.

Elaine complains about the war taking forever to end and her father says if she thinks that's bad he's suffering because his beloved Bucs had a 9 game winning streak snapped by the Brooklyn Dodgers on the back end of a double header in Brooklyn. “Even when they do good it's never enough for you dad,” she says to him. He'll do just about anything to distract Elaine from getting into a tizzy over the war and Gil not being able to visit her.

Jay huddles uncomfortably in his hole eating some soggy something or other. “The can didn't say mix with water and that about all that's in there,” he mutters as the rain continues to make life miserable for everyone. He wonders when the next attack will be attempted and why they just sit here like this. “They must want us to drown,” he says and his pal asked who “they” were.

Combat

The SS S-43, 26 miles NW of Singkawang, hit a TK with a torpedo that did heavy damage to the target and triggered a fire. Then the 7 PCs on the scene found and attacked the sub. The sub has moderately light systems damage and light flooding so her patrol is over.

The SS S-46 tried to attack a TK 21 miles W of Pontianak, but the 4 PCs escorting the tanker detected and attacked the sub, sinking it.

93 miles SW of Vladivostok the SS Bonefish found numerous ships and hit an AK with a fish that started a fire. The DDs, PCs and MSWs located and attacked her then. A couple of hours later the Bonefish was driven off as she tried to stage another attack. This didn't deter her skipper and the escorts dropped depth charges on her again a short time later. The Bonefish has light systems damage and moderate flooding so she'll make for port, get patched up and live to fight another day.

Nagasaki was attacked by 38 X B-24J (1 downed, 9 damaged and 32 X P-38J based out of Formosa. The armaments factory sustained moderately light damage.

Gili Gili had light airfield damage and very light casualties from an air attack. Later the IJA 21st Division was struck by Allied planes for heavy losses.

The 16th Chinese Corps, 88 miles NW of Hengchow, was attacked by 10 X Ann, 9 X Sonia, 3 X Nick and 3 X Oscar for light casualties. The LRCAP never materialized to protect the Chinese troops.

The Allied ships 84 miles SE of Taipei were attacked by 23 X Grace and 31 X Sonia and 16 X Hellcat intercepted them. A Hellcat was damaged in the melee and 4 Graces (15 damaged) and 22 Sonia were splashed. The AP Dardanus was struck by a bomb and the AP Empire Trooper was hit by a torpedo. Some Allied troops were fished out of the water after the attack.

Allied artillery inflicted heavy personnel losses on the Japanese at Naga and the Japanese shells did no harm.

The Allied attack at Takao swept the defenders aside and the base was taken. The Japanese had very heavy casualties and the Allies lost heavily in the fighting. Some of the Japanese are now surrounded and others were retreating towards Tainan.

Stalin looks at the copies of the orders that were issued yesterday and asks if this will be enough support to start an air war with the Japanese. He's told that when all of the units have be repositioned things will look more favorable. Nobody wants to be the one to tell him that more support is needed to sustain an attack on the Japanese. What they don't know is that for now Stalin is content with his recent bloodless gains.

“Wonderful, the weather is breaking and that means tomorrow we get to visit Kitakyushu,” says Brownie to Gil. Gil and the others just file out of the briefing and head to the mess hall for some chow. Somebody jokingly said something about being fattened up for the slaughter. What's on their minds is a new type of Japanese plane appearing in growing numbers called Shinden. It's supposed to be a hot fighter and in capable hands a real killer. In the briefing somebody had said that they thought all of the good Japanese pilots were dead and somebody else replied that the only good Japanese pilot was a dead one. The major conducting the briefing ordered silence and continued without further interruption. The Lucky 11 all wonder to themselves if their escorts will be there, if a prior fighter sweep is scheduled and if they're really lucky there will be no Japanese planes or AA.

The SS Harder, 77 miles S of Hungnam, surprised a lone AK in the predawn by hitting it with 3 shells from the deck gun and a pair of torpedoes. The victim was sinking as the sub moved off. Then the Harder reloaded her tubes and spotted and attacked a pair of TKs under heavy escort. She scored a hit with a fish on a tanker that did heavy damage and a fire started. A quick reload was being done when the busy sub attacked an AK, hitting it 4 times with her deck gun. In the early evening the sub tried to attack another passing convoy, but was driven off by the vigilant escorts.

Kitakyushu was hit by 141 X B-29 who did moderately heavy damage to the Nakajima engine factory. Another strike of 132 X B-29 then arrived and did moderate damage to the heavy industry. Within the hour another attack was made by 207 X B-29 who heaped on very heavy damage to the heavy industry.

Tokyo was swept by 68 X P-51D who dove out of the sun into a gaggle of 57 X Zeke, 24 X George, 10 X Shinden, 44 X Frank and 40 X Tony. The Japanese and American planes fell from the sky like rain as 25 Zekes (1 damaged), 17 Georges, 2 Shindens (1 damaged), 27 Franks and 40 Tonys were splashed. 10 Mustangs were lost and 3 others took damage.

Bangkok's port was hit by 144 X Liberator VI and the heavy AA fire downed 3 bombers and damaged 22. The target took very heavy damage, there were a very large number of secondary explosions (including some fuel) and casualties were placed at very heavy.

Gili Gili had it's airstrip very lightly damaged by an air raid. The South Seas Det. absorbed heavy casualties from an air attack. Then the IJA 21st Division took light losses from Allied aircraft.

The 16th Chinese Corps, 91 miles NW of Changsha, was under a LRCAP of 13 X P-40N when 10 X Ann, 9 X Sonia, 3 X Oscar and 3 X Nick arrived. The unit had light losses, 2 Warhawks were shot down and the Japanese lost 4 Anns, 2 Sonias and a Nick.

The Allied ships near Taichu were attacked by 3 X Judy who were all destroyed trying to penetrate the CAP of 35 X P-38J and 22 X F6F. A Lightning was damaged.

The Allied TF 82 miles NW of Puerto Princesa was attacked by 6 X Betty and 5 were shot down by the AA fire. The lone fish dropped missed by a wide margin.

At Naga the 2 sides exchanged the usual artillery bombardments with the usual results. The Japanese did no harm while they took heavy casualties.

Happy to be back on the ground on Saipan Gil tiredly slips out of his flight gear and just stretches out on the apron. Gel pulls him arm grunting, “Let's go get our shot and chow.” Gil drags himself up and the Lucky 11 are off to the debriefing.

Stick is forever stuck in the same rut. Some people fear that they won't survive the next minute and here is is paid to fly a plane he loves, but only rarely into any danger. One of these days he figures that when he least expects it he'll get his kill.

Sandy sits in her favorite spot gazing out at the panorama displayed before her that seems to stretch out forever. She thinks of Bill and reaches into he pack for a pencil and paper.

Sam is up to his usual stuff after another boring patrol with his squad the guys drifted off and he took Frankie to their favorite spot. Sam now has a ball to throw for Frankie, but the dog brings back a stick. Sam throws the stick and gets up to go and get the ball. As he does a Mustang roars by low over his head and Sam instinctively ducked. His eye caught the flash of sunlight off of some thing and he proceeds to investigate. He is now in possession of a Japanese sword so he continues to look around for the scabbard, but finds nothing. He heads off to the Sea Bees to do a little business and by the time he returns to his squad he is loaded down with enough whiskey to last them for a while.

Combat

The SS Rock attacked a TK under escort by 4 DDs 17 miles NW of Brunei, hitting her target with 2 torpedoes that caused heavy damage and fires. In the afternoon the sub was still being hunted by the destroyers when 1 of them ate 2 fish that caused the DD to disappear in a huge explosion. The other 3 DDs dropped depth charges on the sub before she managed to elude them.

The SS Cisco was patrolling 24 miles NW of Wakkanai when radar picked up 4 approaching ships. The sub planted herself in the anticipated path of her intended victims. When the ships got closer they turned out to be 4 X DD and they zigged where it had been thought they would zag, ruining the sub's hoped for setup.

At Kunming the 16th Group Army was under the watchful eye of a Dinah when 20 Warhawks appeared and the Dinah ran. Another Dinah was chased away in the afternoon.

Naga was bombed by 130 X B-24J (4 damaged), 44 X B-24D and 72 X P-38J who did very heavy damage to the airfield, light damage to the port, triggered a huge number of secondary explosions (some fuel) and there were moderately heavy casualties. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was attacked by 9 X B-25J and 12 X P-38J for moderate losses. Japanese artillery was useless and the Allied barrage inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese.

Manila was struck by 28 X B-17E (6 damaged) and 59 X P-38J for light port damage, a secondary explosion and moderate personnel losses. While that was happening another raid of 44 X B-24J (2 damaged) and 54 X P-38J hit the airfield for moderately heavy damage and moderate casualties.

Clark Field was hit by 81 X B-24D (1 downed, 22 damaged) and 27 X P-38J for very heavy damage to the airfield, a few secondary explosions were seen, a Frank was left burning and troop losses were heavy. The 23rd Special Base Force was jumped by 42 X B-25J (1 downed, 14 damaged) and 18 X P-51D for heavy losses. Another attack came on and the IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade was pounced on by 33 X B-25J (7 damaged) and 11 X P-51D for heavy casualties.

Gili Gili's airstrip was moderately damaged by an air raid. The IJA 21st Division was struck by Allied planes for heavy casualties.

At Tavoy the IJA 37th Division took moderate casualties from 57 X Mosquito FB.VI (2 downed, 7 damaged) and 11 X Thunderbolt II.

The 16th Chinese Corps, 88 miles NW of Changsha, was attacked by 7 X Ann (1 downed), 5 X Sonia (1 downed), 3 X Oscar and 3 X Nick. There were 10 X P-40N on a LRCAP and they lost a plane in the fight, but the LCU escaped harm.

The British continued to amass everything necessary to make Operation Swift Sword a success. Churchill is fretting over it like a mother hen and he's driving the staff officers crazy with his constant questioning. The whole thing has a new nickname of Winnie's Warriors. Of course this is behind Winston's back.

Bill has submitted a request to have the Mighty Mo relocated to a proper port where her needed repairs can be readily facilitated. He figures that he'll hear something eventually. In the meantime his ship and her sister, the New Jersey sit with ARs busily attending to them while they await sailing orders. Everybody is on edge as the Japanese situation continues to deteriorate. Bill knows that sooner or later the IJN will come out a do their damnedest to go out in a blaze of glory.

Slim sits eating some warm food for the first time in a while. He jokes that his stomach is confused as it's used to cold and wet food. The 2nd Marine Division still needs time to refit, but it's doubtful that it'll happen. Slim wonders if they'll be seeing Manila before the end of the war.

Gene looks at the files in front of him and he decides that he's not qualified for this job. He takes the files with him into the meeting and forms the people into groups and drops a file for each group. They will now be exploring if the idea set forth in their file is feasible or not. Just before he leaves for the day Gene's boss stops by his office and tells him that he knew Gene was the right guy for the job and that he's very happy with the way things are proceeding.

Combat

Roti Island was occupied by the Allies.

Near Pescadores a PBM attacked a sub, claiming a hit. Another PBM attacked a sub in the same area and claimed a hit. It was not known if this was the same or a different sub.

Nagasaki was bombed by 95 X B-24J (1 downed, 9 damaged) and 91 X P-38J. Moderate damage was done to the heavy industry.

Sapporo underwent a raid by 152 X B-29 ( 4 damaged), 24 X B-24D (1 downed, 1 damaged), 18 X P-51D and 53 X P-38J resulting in moderate damage to the oil facilities.

Naga's port was moderately damaged, there was an extremely large number of secondary explosions (some fuel) reported and casualties were moderate. 2 B-24D and a B-24J were damaged in the attack. Artillery exchanges saw the Allies unharmed and the Japanese having heavy losses.

Manila suffered light port damage, a couple of secondary explosions and extremely light personnel losses from an air raid. 3 B-17Es were damaged. Another strike on the airfield this time resulted in moderate damage and heavy casualties with 5 B-24Js being damaged by flak.

Gili Gili sustained moderately light damage to the airstrip and a secondary explosion from an attack made by 15 X Liberator VI. The IJA 21st Division had moderate losses from another air attack.

At Toyohara the Karafuto Mixed Brigade was jumped by 36 X B-25J (2 damaged) and 4 X P-51D, but the unit escaped harm.

At Clark Field the IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade was struck by 36 X B-25J (9 damaged) and 18 X P-51D for moderately heavy casualties. Then the IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hit for heavy losses by 29 X B-25J (1 downed, 15 damaged) and 12 X P-51D.

At Kunming the 65th Chinese Corps was attacked by 6 X Peggy, 2 X Helen and 3 X Nick who ran afoul of 9 X P-40N. A Helen and a Nick were destroyed and the unit had moderate casualties.

The Allied ships 23 miles W of Sakashima were attacked by 4 X Mary who were splashed by the CAP of 306 X F6F, 33 X F4U-1D and 10 X P-38J.

The IJN DDs 18 miles NW of Wakkanai were attacked by 20 X B-29, 42 X B-24D, 11 X A-26B (2 damaged), 19 X P-51D, 47 X P-47D, and 43 X P-38J with the following results.
DD Kiri 4 shell hits, 7 bomb hits, sunk
DD Asakaze 8 shell hits
DD Akikaze 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
The 4E bombers were set to City Attack and carried out those orders in the morning and then did this in the afternoon without a Naval Attack setting.

Harry speaks to his top military men and tells them that he want the war against Japan accelerated, but at the same time he also wants to minimize American casualties. As the officers leave the meeting one of them muttered to a friend that, “Maybe we should just ask the Japs to lay down their weapons and go home.”

Jay watched in amazement as the Allied artillery churned up the earth to his unit's front. He wonders how anything could survive such carnage, but he knows that when the time comes for his unit to move forward the Japanese will be there waiting for them. To drive the point home the chatter of machine guns breaks out up and down the line.

Stick got out of his cockpit and shook his head from side to side as the crew chief was there to greet him. Stick can't believe that they're on Japan's doorstep and yet the Japanese don't do anything about it. “Maybe I'll never get that kill,” Stick says as he drops off of the wing.

DD Yamakaze 24 shell hits, 4 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
DD Asakaze 4 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage

At Naga Allied artillery inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese and the Japanese responded, but only made noise.

At Rangoon the assembled British brass goes over the plans for Operation Swift Sword. “What happens if the IJN comes out?” asks on of the generals. The answer from an admiral was “Then of course we'll jolly well have to sink them.” Confidence in the plan continues to grow as the strength of the RN and what it's throwing into the operation grows.

Standing on the bridge of the BB Maryland, where he flies his flag from, Ed stares at the BB West Virginia. He holds a crumpled flimsy in his hand that reported light systems damage, moderately light flooding and light fires from the torpedo hit. “Now you'd expect mines and there are none, but the damned torpedoes are just as bad. OK let's get her back to port, get her patched up and by then either Pearl or Stateside will do the rest.”

The officer apologizes to Bill as he says, “There's just no way to repair the shaft without proper facilities. I'm sorry skipper, but that's that.” Bill thanks the man and tells him that he's done a good job and miracles just don't happen every day. Later Bill retires to his cabin and writes to Sandy. He tells her that the weight of command is tiring him and that he looks forward to time with her more than anything else in this world.

Combat

A night air attack on Tavoy was made by 11 X Blenheim IF and ground fire damaged 1 as the bombs all fell harmlessly into the bush. An hour after the sun rose the IJA 31st Division was struck by 49 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 3 damaged) and 13 X Thunderbolt II for moderate losses.

Toyohara was hit by 44 X B-25J (3 damaged) and 20 X P-51D for a couple of secondary explosions and negligible casualties.

At Naga artillery shells flew back and forth doing no harm to the Allies and inflicting heavy casualties on the Japanese.

Although the SS Runner reached a port last night her flooding was so bad that she sank in the morning. The crew watched their boat settle beneath the waters from the safety of the shore.

Jay wonders how long he'll have to live in this hole. He feels awful as the grime is caked on him and his hair is plastered to his head. They got lots of water forward last night and he actually used some of it to wash off his head, face and neck. If he had to pick a word to describe his life right now he'd use disgusting. The worst is that he seems to have some kind of something growing under his toenail as the nail is lifting upwards. He sighs and is thankful that the Japanese can't seem to hit the broadside of a barn from the inside with their artillery. He continues to try and boost his spirits by telling himself how happy he is that he's not out there in a Japanese uniform getting shelled morning, noon and night, day in and day out with no respite.

Sam and Frankie wander down to the docks and then Sam just sits there hanging his legs off of a dock. There's nothing going on here and nobody to bother them so Sam strips off his shirt and pants, rolling them up to make a pillow and falls asleep in the warmth of the sun. Since he found that secret cache of Japanese stuff he and his squad have been hung over more than not.

Truman has instructed his people to rebuff, as kindly as possible, all British requests for support. “We already have troops participating in this operation of theirs, but the USN has other priorities,” he tells them. The meeting then shifts to activities elsewhere and he asks “Are we going to take the Pescadores? If so what will we use them for?”

The SS Charr attacked a lone TK 83 miles S of Inch'on, hitting it with the deck gun 3 times and with a torpedo. The vessel was heavily damaged and burning. The Charr attacked the TK again later in the day, hitting it with 2 torpedoes and the target was no more.

Tavoy sustained extremely light airfield damage from a night raid of 7 X Blenheim IF (2 damaged).

A pair of IJN MSWs attacked the SS KXVIII 14 miles S of Belitung, doing no harm.

A Japanese PG 21 miles E of Kuantan tried to attack the SS Tantalus, but the sub evaded her would be tormentor.

Akita was bombed by 188 X B-29 (2 damaged), 63 X B-24D (4 damaged), 20 X P-51D and 51 X P-38J who did heavy damage to the oil facilities.

Balikpapan was swept by 71 X P-38J and they were opposed by 20 X Zeke and 4 X Tony. All of the Japanese planes were splashed except for a Zeke and a Tony. A pair of Lightnings were shot down.

Gili Gili's airstrip was lightly damaged by an air attack.

The Allied shipping near Takao was attacked by 4 X Frances and 11 X P-38J shot 1 down and drove the rest away. 3 Lightnings took some damage. Later 6 X Frances appeared and 23 X P-38J dealt with them damaging 1 Frances while the others away. A Lightning was damaged in the running skirmish. Then 2 X Betty tried for the ships and ran into 23 X P-38J and 10 X F6F who downed both of the bombers. A pair of Lightnings and 2 Hellcats were damaged.

At Naga it was business as usual with the Japanese artillery inflicting extremely light casualties and the Allied barrages accounting for moderately heavy Japanese losses.

The Allied troops at Tainan assaulted the Japanese positions. Both sides suffered heavy casualties, but the attackers gained a little ground and commanders were optimistic about taking the base in the near future.

Jim's outfit boards an AK and once aboard they are told that they're bound for Formosa. “Where the hell is that?” asks one of the guys. Their CO tells them that there are numerous projects ranging from repairing battle damage to airfields and ports to the expansion of the same and building fortifications. Jim thinks that at least he won't be bored like on Tori Shima. He then thinks of Sam and wonders if his outfit will ever get off of that rock.

Slim does an ammo check of his lads and sends some of them off for more. He's very tired after the combat today, but his responsibilities to the unit keep him going. Later he has something to eat before grabbing a couple of hours of sleep.

Jay heard that a regiment down the line actually took some casualties today from the Japanese shellings. This isn't good, he thinks. He hates the bombardments more than anything else because he feels totally helpless. At least in a firefight there's something to do except being terrified.

Combat

Bangkok had it's port bombed by 156 X Liberator VI. The AA fire was heavy and fairly accurate as 4 bombers went down and 26 were damaged. The port was ravaged, there were a great many secondary explosions (many fuel) and casualties were very heavy.

Balikpapan was raided by 31 X B-24J and 125 X P-38J who were opposed by 4 X Zeke and 7 X Tony. All of the Japanese fighters were shot down and 2 Lightnings were lost. Flak damaged 6 of the bombers who caused moderate damage to the airfield, many secondary explosions and extremely light personnel losses.

Manila was struck by 38 X B-25J (1 downed, 18 damaged) and 15 X P-51D for moderate airfield damage, a couple of secondary explosions were reported and casualties were placed at heavy. Later 40 X B-24J (4 damaged) came on and caused light damage to the port and there were light troop losses.

Clark Field was attacked by 42 X B-25J (2 downed, 18 damaged) and 23 X P-38J for moderate airfield damage, many secondary explosions and heavy casualties.

Gili Gili had moderate airstrip damage from an air raid. The IJA 21st Division had extremely light losses from another air attack.

At Naga the IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was pounced on by 9 X B-25J (2 damaged) and 13 X P-38J for moderate casualties. Artillery exchanges caused no harm to the Allied forces and heavy losses to the Japanese.

At Tainan another assault gained a bit more ground with both sides taking heavy casualties.

The Flying Deuces have been transferred to Takao. Stick watches as the mechanics give his plane a complete going over before he can use the bird. He talks with the guys as they work, asking questions and they take the time to answer as they continue to do their jobs. Stick is still one of the few pilots who seem to take any interest in the rudimentary things like maintaining the aircraft. Stick wants to know all of the whys and wherefores and he not afraid to get dirty when the show him something. It doesn't hurt any that he also takes care of the ground crew with the occasional bottle. One of the mechanics told Slim that he's aces with the guys and if there's anything they can do for him, just say the word.

Gil got a letter today and also a package. The letter was from one of his sisters and at least she didn't go on and on about his father not working and the financial problems it caused. The package was from Elaine and packed inside of the popcorn, which protected the contents from shock and humidity, was a treasure of Toll House cookies. Today he is the most popular guy in the crew as the cookies, down to the last crumb, were greedily consumed in record time. They always share the goodies that are sent from home.

Slim wearily trudges up and down the platoon's line of holes and stops by with a word or two for the occupants of the holes. Everybody is bushed and though nobody was killed in today's attack a couple of the guys were wounded. One of them has already returned despite the reluctance of the doctor to allow it. The lad wants to be there for his buddies, who rely on him as he does them. He's most afraid of being out of action long enough that he'll end up with another unit. The Marines, unlike the Army, try to return the men to their units, but the fear of that not happening makes for faster healing wounds.

Combat

The SS Seawolf was hunted by 3 X PG 144 miles NW of Sasebo, but the Japanese never pinned her down and the sub slipped away.

The SS Lizardfish, at 156 miles W of Sasebo, hit an AK with 2 torpedoes doing heavy damage and setting the vessel on fire.

Tokyo was attacked by 102 X B-29 who had the bad luck to run into 54 X Zeke, 12 X George, 20 X Shinden, 48 X Frank and 24 X Tony. The bombers defensive fire accounted for 2 Zekes (11 damaged), 1 George (3 damaged), 2 Franks (25 damaged) and 5 Tonys (5 damaged) being destroyed. 6 Shindens were also damaged. Then the bombers braved the intense AA fire and all told 37 big birds went down with 28 more being damaged. No bombs fell on target. About 40 minutes later 48 X P-51 D arrived on a sweep and 40 X Zeke, 9 X George, 16 X Shinden, 23 X Frank and 19 X Tony gave battle. The Japanese lost 16 Zekes, 3 Georges, 8 Shindens, 19 Franks and 16 Tonys to the Allies 7 Mustangs shot down and 2 damaged.

Sapporo was bombed by 181 X B-29 (1 downed, 6 damaged), 57 X B-24D (2 damaged), 12 X PB4Y, 23 X P-51D and 17 X P-38J for extremely heavy manpower damage.

Balikpapan was raided by 24 X B-24J (3 damaged) and 110 X P-38J for very light airfield damage and a secondary explosion.

Naga was hit by 13 X B-25J (6 damaged) and 21 X F4U-1D for very light damage to the airstrip, there were many secondary explosions observed and casualties were light. Another wave of planes consisting of 48 X B-17E, 91 X B-24D (1 damaged) and 41 X P-38J caused heavy airfield damage, moderate port damage, many secondary explosions and moderate personnel losses. A little while later 28 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 40 X P-38J arrived and added moderate damage to the ravaged airstrip and some more secondary explosions. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was bombed by 36 X A-26B (6 damaged) and 48 X P-38J. Another strike on the unit by 41 X A-26B (1 damaged), 37 X B-25J (1 downed, 10 damaged) and 30 X P-38J resulted in very heavy casualties. The Japanese artillery made lots of noise and accomplished nothing while the Allied shelling of the Japanese positions caused heavy losses.

Manila was visited by 22 X B-24J (7 damaged) who inflicted light damage on the port and light casualties.

At Tainan the 1st Base Force was jumped by 47 X A-26B, 6 X B-25J (1 downed, 1 damaged) and 26 X P-38J for heavy troop losses. The Allied troops assaulted the Japanese positions and took the base while sustaining extremely light casualties. The Japanese lost heavily and are now boxed in with nowhere to run.

The Allied ships 27 miles N of Sabang were attacked by 7 X Betty, 15 X Frances and 25 X Zeke. The CAP of 63 X Hellcat II, 155 X Corsair IV and 19 X Firefly splashed all of the Japanese planes before the ships were in sight. The RN sustained 2 Hellcats, 9 Corsairs and 4 Fireflys damaged. Another raid of 3 X Betty, 16 X Frances and 3 X Zeke. In the running battle with the CAP 2 X Frances managed to survive by ducking into the clouds and heading home. A Hellcat was damaged.

The Allied ships near Sabang were targeted by 9 X Frances and 20 X Zeke who were greeted by 15 X P-47D, 36 X Thunderbolt II and 10 X Spitfire VIII. 4 X Frances (1 damaged) and 18 X Zeke were shot down at the cost of 4 X P-47D, 7 X Thunderbolt II and 2 X Spitfire VIII taking damage. No ships were ever directly threatened. Another strike of 24 X Peggy and 19 X Zeke arrived a little later and all of them were downed by the CAP which lost 1 P-47D (1 damaged), 1 Thunderbolt II (4 damaged) and 1 Spitfire VIII. Once again the ships were well protected.

Bad weather kept the B-29s on Saipan from flying and in the late afternoon word got to the Lucky 11 that the planes that went to Tokyo were slaughtered. The fighter sweep arrived after the bombers were clobbered. An attack on Shimuzu is scheduled for tomorrow, but the weather looks iffy. Gil wonders if it's just him or if others feel the same thing. He feels like a step in this direction or that, heavy clouds here or there are what makes the difference between life and death in this crazy world.

The Palawan rides at anchor awaiting her next assignment. Red and Cookie managed to get ashore and they decided that the only one to enjoy the visit to Dadjangas was Lucky. It's a busy little port with nothing of interest.

Bill reads over the reports and decides that Cagayan isn't the place for the Mighty Mo as she needs a port with some facilities to make needed repairs before being called to battle and the lack of attention from higher up doesn't change the facts. He then turns his attention too writing a letter to Sandy.

Slim happily collapses in the shade of a wrecked wall and lights a smoke. Another fight with the Japanese appears to have been won, but he knows that just because the objective has been taken the bloodletting isn't over with. He wonders if the Japanese will ever smarten up and know that there's no reason to die for a lost cause. He sighs because he knows that their whole honor thing requires that they willingly lay down their lives for the Emperor and that it's better to be dead than to live with the shame of being a prisoner. Just one more reason to win this war as far as he's concerned.

Combat

82 miles SE of Kagoshima the SS Capitaine was trying to line up an attack on a CVL and 2 DDs, but she was detected and as a result missed her golden opportunity.

The SS Sea Dog, 79 miles NW of Singkawang, attacked a TK being escorted by 7 PCs. The tanker was struck by 2 torpedoes that caused heavy damage and a fire. The PCs then attacked and inflicted severe damage on the sub. She is trying to make it to a port with moderate systems damage and heavy flooding. It's extremely doubtful that she can make it and another sub is nearby waiting for the word to pick up the crew.

The SS Lizardfish, 144 miles W of Nagasaki, attacked 5 PCs and hit 1 with a torpedo the did heavy damage and a fire broke out. The sub was then subjected to an extended hunt by a DD and 2 PCs throughout the morning, but every time she was detected Lizardfish evaded her tormentors. In the afternoon the hunted turned hunter as the sub attacked 4 PCs looking for her. 2 fish slammed into 1 of the PCs, killing the vessel. The remaining 3 PCs then unloaded on the sub. When she finally got away from her attackers she had moderate systems damage and light flooding so the sub will make for a port to get patched up.

Shimuzu was attacked by 138 X B-29 who scored moderate damage on the Nakajima engine plant. A short time later 198 X B-29 arrived and they hit the Mitsubishi engine factory for heavy damage.

Naga was bombed by 46 X B-17E, 74 X B-24D (1 downed, 2 damaged) and 39 X P-38J for heavy airfield damage, light damage to the port, there were many secondary explosions and casualties were extremely light. Before the dust had settled 27 X B-24J (2 damaged) and 36 X P-38J arrived and added moderate damage to the airstrip, a couple of secondary explosions were observed and personnel losses were negligible. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hit 3 times by Allied planes for heavy casualties. 8 Mitchells and 6 Invaders were damaged in the strikes on the unit. Japanese artillery was ineffective once again, but the Allied guns inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese.

Manila was raided by 19 X B-24J (7 damaged) for light damage to the port and a secondary explosion was claimed.

Naha was targeted by 85 X B-24J and 139 X P-51D who were intercepted by 5 X Zeke, and 15 X George. All of the Japanese fighters were downed by the Mustangs who had 1 plane take some damage. The AA fire damaged 9 of the Liberators who caused moderate damage to the airfield, triggered many secondary explosions, destroyed 9 X Grace, 4 X Sonia, 1 X Jack and 6 X Betty. There were moderately heavy casualties suffered by the Japanese.

At Clark Field the IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade was attacked by 44 X A-26B (1 downed, 18 damaged), 28 X B-25J (14 damaged) and 29 X P-38J and the unit sustained very heavy losses. The IJA 8th Ind. Mixed Brigade was jumped by 18 X B-25J (10 damaged) for moderate losses.

Near Singapore 4 X PB4Y struck at an AK. The Japanese had 3 X Rufe, 6 X Zeke, 25 X Frank, 13 X Tony and 7 X Randy intercept the bombers, downing 2 of them. 2 Franks and 2 Randys were damaged and the ship escaped harm.

The SS Seawolf, 72 miles S of Inch'on, attacked an AK being escorted by 4 PGs. The target ate a pair of fish that caused it to sink. The escorts then proceeded to pound the sub.

The SS KXVIII found and attacked an AS and 2 MSWs 20 miles SE of Banjarmasin, hitting the AS with a torpedo that set it ablaze and did heavy damage.

The SS Hake was patrolling 94 miles SE of Shanghai when she attacked a lone AK, hitting it 3 times with the deck gun and 2 torpedoes struck home. The target sank in short order.

At Tainan the Allied forces attacked the Japanese inflicting heavy losses on them and sustaining moderate casualties themselves. The surviving Japanese are now surrounded in a very small pocket and resistance is expected to be broken soon.

The Palawan has commenced loading supplies and as usual the crew is betting on where they're bound for. Cookie has the honor of holding the funds and he jokingly said that it'll buy lots of steaks for Lucky.

Slim's company was held in reserve today so mercifully they didn't shed any blood in today's attacks on the stubborn Japanese survivors. The lads don't even think of them as defenders anymore once the objective has been taken. There are only survivors and the dead and the Japanese prefer the later.

Truman listens to the briefing and says that the war is going OK and that victory is in sight. Based on that he announces that the A bomb will not be released for use given the current situation. “I do reserve the right to reverse that though depending on the course of events over the next couple of months.,” he added in closing. At the current time plans for future operations continue, but it is expected that they will never come to fruition.

The SS Dolphin reached her destination of Soerabaja and sowed her mines when along came an AP, 2 PCs and 5 MSWs. The sub's skipper ordered an attack and the AP was hit by a torpedo that did heavy damage and set it on fire. The escorts then found and attacked the Dolphin, sinking her.

The SS S-18 located an AS 79 miles SW of Banjarmasin with no escorts and fed it 3 fish, dooming it.

Toyama was bombed by 103 X B-29 and the CAP of 4 X George and 4 X Frank couldn't do much to stop them. 2 Georges and 2 Franks were damaged along with a Frank shot down. The big birds lost 2 planes and had 9 others damaged as they caused light damage to the Mitsubishi engine factory.

Asahigawa was attacked by 90 X B-29, 56 X B-24D, 21 X P-51D, 18 X P-47D and 68 X P-38J for moderate damage to the Mitsubishi engine facility.

Bangkok's port was raided by 147 X Liberator VI and AA fire downed 1 and damaged 23 of the bombers. The port took extremely heavy damage, there were reports of a huge number of secondary explosions, many6 of which were fuel and casualties were placed at very heavy.

Naga was struck by 44 X B-17E (2 damaged) and 71 X P-38J who did moderate damage to the port, triggered some secondary explosions and accounted for light personnel losses. A short time later 40 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 60 X P-38J arrived and caused light damage to the airfield. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was attacked twice by aircraft resulting in moderate casualties. 3 Mitchells and 4 Invaders were damaged by ground fire in the attacks. The IJA55th Ind. Mixed Brigade had moderate losses from an air raid in which 4 Invaders took some damage. The Allied force had negligible casualties from the Japanese artillery and the Japanese suffered heavy losses from the Allied shelling of their positions.

At Toyohara the Karafuto Mixed Brigade had moderate casualties from 10 X A-26, 36 X B-25J (2 damaged) and 3 X P-51 D.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division was hit by 42 X Mosquito FB.VI and 4 X Kittyhawk III for light losses.

At Clark Field the IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade had heavy losses from a strike made by 23 X A-26B (2 downed, 11 damaged) and 20 X P-38J.

Tokyo had 40 X Zeke, 10 X George, 23 X Shinden, 24 X Frank and 18 X Tony aloft when 48 X P-51D slashed through the gaggle of Japanese planes. 14 Zekes (2 damaged), 7 Georges, 5 Shindens (1 damaged), 15 Franks and 17 Tonys were shot down at the cost of 10 Mustangs lost and 4 damaged.

Naha was swept by 50 X P-51D, but there were no Japanese planes up.

At Tainan the Allied units attacked the Japanese inflicting extremely heavy casualties on them while sustaining negligible losses of their own. It is hoped that this will end organized Japanese resistance.

Jay spent the night in a LP and now that he and his buddy were relieved they are looking forward to some chow and sleep. Jay is just about to nod off when artillery shells start to impact in the area. He curls up in the bottom of the hole praying to survive today. Once the shelling stopped he just looks with amazement at his pal who is sleeping like a baby.

Chris spent the entire day doing nothing except for eating, sleeping and writing letters. He feels great, but knows that more than a day is really in order. One of the pilots crashed on takeoff this afternoon as it appeared that his engine just quit. A destroyer picked up the badly rattled pilot who was lucky to only have had a pair of broken legs.

Slim sent some of the lads to the rear to get ammo and 1 of them was instructed to get his wound attended to. The lad had insisted that he was alright, but Slim insisted and when your Gunny insists that's the end of the subject. Slim's company is down to about 75% of it's full strength. So many of the lads are replacements and he still hasn't gotten over that some of them are draftees. Who ever would have believed that the Corps would be anything other than all volunteers?

Combat

The SS S-30 was patrolling 76 miles NE of Soerabaja when she detected 5 X PC. The sub attacked and struck a PC with a torpedo that caused heavy damage and fires.

3 IJN PCs encountered a mine field at Soerabaja and started sweeping it.

At Naga 37 X B-24D (2 damaged), 35 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 32 X P-38J struck for moderate airfield damage, light port damage, some secondary explosions were observed and casualties were placed at moderate. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was struck by Allied aircraft 3 times for very heavy casualties. 1 A-26B (19 damaged) was destroyed and 3 Mitchells took damage in the attacks. The 130th IJNAF Base Force had moderate losses from Allied planes. 2 Mitchells and 2 Invaders were damaged. Japanese artillery accomplished nothing and the Allied shelling yielded very heavy Japanese losses.

Manila was bombed by 76 X B-24D (1 downed, 15 damaged) and 19 X P-38J for moderate port damage, some secondary explosions and heavy personnel losses. Another strike composed of 19 X B-24J (7 damaged) and 34 X P-38J caused light port damage and triggered a secondary explosion.

Clark Field was visited by 27 X B-17E (2 downed, 10 damaged) and 43 X P-38J. The airstrip took moderate damage and casualties were heavy.

At Toyohara the Karafuto Mixed Brigade was jumped by 50 X B-25J (3 damaged), 12 X A-26B and 20 X P-51D for heavy troop losses.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division had moderate casualties from an Allied air attack.

Sam actually saw a sub off of the coast today. He didn't know whose it was, but he assumed that it was American as not planes attacked it. He also know that there is supposed to be a regular sub force screening the island against a possible Japanese action in the area. Other than that it was more of the same boring routine. There have been some movies lately at night, but still there's nothing to do except for the patrols that always turn up nothing.

Jay is soaked and generally miserable as he settles into his hole for the night. He was out on a patrol this afternoon, but nothing came of it other than getting a peek at the Japanese positions. One of the guys was spotted and they drew lots of small arms fire and in return the Japanese got a heavy dose of mortar rounds. Now he'll have something to eat, hopefully before more rain falls and then if he's lucky a few hours of sleep will be in order.

It's becoming almost impossible to fly my bombers against Japan due to the weather straying between overcast, thunderstorms (sometimes flyable) and rain. To get a partly cloudy day is a rarity.

Combat

A night attack on Bangkok did no damage to the Japanese and all 7 of the Blenheim Ifs took damage from ground fire.

Ed's Old Gals conducted a naval bombardment of Taipei that moderately damaged the airstrip, heavily damaged the port triggered a large number of secondary explosions , some of which were fuel and inflicted very heavy casualties.

The SS Amberjack was attacked by a DD and 2 PCs about 97 miles W of Nagasaki. With moderate systems damage and moderately heavy flooding the sub will try for a friendly port.

Tavoy's harbor was mined by 152 X Liberator VI today despite the ordered target for this raid being Bangkok.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division escaped harm as the Allied planes missed their target due to the lousy weather.

At Naga the IJA 103rd Division had moderate losses from an Allied air attack. 3 Invaders were damaged by the AA fire. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was struck twice by Allied planes for heavy casualties. 10 Invaders and 3 Mitchells (1 destroyed) were damaged in the attacks. Allied artillery accounted for heavy Japanese personnel losses and the Japanese futilely expended munitions for no return.

Georgetown was swept by 10 X Thunderbolt II who ran into 26 X Zero and 9 X Zeke. 4 Zeros and 3 Zekes were shot down and 3 Jugs were damaged in the fight.

“Oh boy, oh boy, we get to go back to Japan tomorrow. I never thought I'd like lousy weather so much,” Hoppy says. The rest of the Lucky 11 agree with him. Gil spends some time after chow writing to Elaine and then home.

The Palawan is almost done loading and Red tells them that they're going to deliver the cargo to a new base being built up for the fleet. When asked where he answers with, “I dunno, but I suppose we'll find out once we sail.” Immediately a new pool is formed and of course Cookie holds the pot.

Ed is once more fretting about the fuel stocks available to his Old Gals and announces to his staff that the base's fuel is not to be shared out unless it's critical. He even went so far to tell them that the AKs that come and go should be considered as floating fuel tanks, if needed. “If somebody doesn't like it let them go direct to Washington, but we come first and I won't share unless I get orders to the contrary.” The men on his staff are used to Ed's unflinching style and have even come to appreciate it. It's very rare that he doesn't get what he wants as he does command respect.

Combat

The SS Triton was attacked by 5 MSWs 67 miles N of Toboali.

Taipei was bombarded by Ed's Old Gals who then departed to replenish. The airfield was moderately damaged, the port lightly, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were moderate.

At Chungking the Chinese 16th Group Army was attacked 4 Peggys and 22 Warhawks intercepted them, downing 3 of the Peggys and having 6 fighters damaged. The unit had no losses.

Niigata was being protected by 16 X Frank when 360 X B-29 appeared. 2 Franks were destroyed and 12 others were damaged in their vain attempt to stem the tidal wave of bombers. The AA fire then when to work and all told 1 B-29 was lost and 35 were damaged. The Nakajima engine works took moderate damage.

Tokyo was swept by 126 X P-51D who jumped 39 X Zeke, 7 X George, 32 X Shinden, 44 X Frank and 26 X Tony. 17 Mustangs were shot down and 4 more were damaged in the furball. The Japanese had 37 Zekes, 5 Georges, 24 Shindens, 44 Franks and 24 Tonys splashed.

Bangkok was raided by 7 X Blenheim IF (5 damaged), 27 X Blenheim IV (1 downed, 15 damaged), 16 X Beaufighter VIC (1 downed, 8 damaged) and 21 X Beaufighter Mk 21 (1 downed, 5 damaged). The port was lightly damaged, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were moderate.

Kendari was hit by 14 X A-26B (1 damaged) and 55 X P-38J for extremely light airfield damage and a secondary explosion.

Naga was bombed by 22 X B-24D (1 damaged) and 13 X P-38J for moderate airfield damage, a secondary explosion was claimed and personnel losses were very light. Then 30 X B-24D, 29 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 58 X P-38J arrived to do light damage to the airfield, moderate damage to the port, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were negligible. The daily artillery exchanges produced the normal results of no harm to the Allies and the Japanese having heavy losses.

Clark Field was struck by 53 X B-24J (13 damaged) for moderately heavy airstrip damage, a couple of secondary explosions were observed and troop losses were moderate.

The IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade was jumped twice by Allied planes for moderate casualties at the cost of a Mitchell destroyed and 25 damaged.

The Japanese ships near Kendari were attacked by 12 X PB4Y who hit an AK with a bomb that triggered a fire. Another strike of 3 X PB4Y, 16 X B-24J and 29 P-38J arrived and an AK ate 7 bombs for heavy damage and fires while another was also hit by 7 bombs for similar results. Another 9 X PB4Y arrived later and hit an MSW with a few bombs for heavy damage and fires and an AK was hit by 2 bombs which did heavy damage and a fire erupted. All told claims of an MSW and 3 AKs being sunk were confirmed by air patrols and coast watchers.

The SS S-30 was hunted by 2 PCs and 5 MSWs 76 miles SE of Banjarmasin, but they couldn't get a firm fix on the sub.

Much to the Lucky 11's relief they didn't fly due to poor weather. They know that there's no getting around it, but to miss a mission is OK with them, even if it only means another day to fly it.

Palawan's convoy is expected to sail in the predawn hours. The crew is unsettled as they suspect they'll be sailing close to Japan.

Stick can't believe that he's stuck on Formosa flying CAP missions and the Japanese don't even try for all of the juicy shipping unloading in the port. The talk among the pilots of the Flying Deuces is that maybe the Japanese are running out of planes. “Their pilots are sure crummy,” said one of the guys. Stick craves any kind of plane in his gun sight, but that just doesn't seem to be in the cards.

Sam watched lots of Mustangs departing and he figured something was up. After a while he knew that they were on an offensive mission otherwise they'd be returning by now. He stretches out and takes a nap with Frankie curled up next to him.

Combat

The SS S-36 was patrolling 73 miles SW of Balikpapan when she picked up many blips on her radar. She tracked and managed to position herself for an attack on an AK, 5 MSWs and 2 PCs. The AK was struck by a torpedo that caused a fire to break out and then the escorts found and attacked the attacker. Later the sub managed to hit a PC with a pair of fish that ravaged the target, sinking it. In the evening the sub was scuttled due to extensive damage and flooding.

The SS Sealion, 139 miles N of Miri, unsuccessfully attacked a TK under escort by a PG and 5 PCs who located and turned the table on her.

The SS Roncador, 61 miles S of Kagoshima, tried and failed to get an attack in on 2 unsuspecting DDs.

5 IJN MSWs located a mine field at Soerabaja and immediately set about to sweeping it.

The SS Haddo put a torpedo into a lone DD causing heavy damage and fires 79 miles SE of Camranh Bay.

At Chungking the 16th Group Army was attacked by 3 Peggys who were destroyed by the CAP of 16 X P-40N, 3 of whom were damaged.

Hakodate was attacked by 191 X B-29 (1 damaged), 40 X B-24D (1 damaged), 15 X P-51D (1 downed, 1 damaged) and 65 X P-38J who tore through the 25 Tonys like they weren't even there. 1 Tony survived the fight and the Nakajima engine plant took moderate damage.

Tokyo was swept by 122 X P-51D and they attacked the 18 X Zeke, 6 X George, 19 X Shinden, 5 X Frank and 10 X Tony. 16 Zekes, 6 Georges, 16 Shindens, 5 Franks and 4 Tonys (1 damaged) were blasted from the sky at the cost of 4 Mustangs lost and another damaged.

Bangkok was raided by 9 X Beaufighter Mk 21 (3 damaged), 7 X Beaufighter VIC (2 downed, 3 damaged), 14 X Blenheim IV (3 downed, 8 damaged) and 4 X Blenheim IF (4 damaged) resulting in light port damage, a couple of secondary explosions and moderate casualties. Then 148 X Liberator VI (3 downed, 21 damaged) appeared and they ravaged the port, triggered a huge number of secondary explosions, many of which were fuel and inflicted very heavy personnel losses.

Georgetown was attacked by 42 X Mosquito FB.VI (3 downed, 5 damaged) and 23 X Thunderbolt II (1 downed). The Japanese threw 12 X Zero and 40 X Zeke at them and lost 5 Zeros (2 damaged) and 19 Zekes (1 damaged). The airstrip was hit for light damage, a couple of secondary explosions were claimed, a Dinah and a Frances were destroyed and casualties were very light.

Clark Field was pasted by 39 X B-17E (5 damaged) and 35 X B-24D (5 damaged). The airfield was heavily damaged, there were a few secondary explosions seen and troop losses were heavy. The IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade took very light casualties and an Invader went down, 12 damaged in an air raid.

At Toyohara the Karafuto Mixed Brigade had moderate casualties from 36 X B-25J (7 damaged), 9 X A-26B (3 damaged) and 6 X P-51D.

At Naga the IJA 103rd Division was attacked by Allied planes and had very light losses. 3 Mitchells and 4 Invaders took damage in the raid. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was struck 3 times by Allied aircraft for very heavy casualties. 8 Lightnings, 9 Invaders (2 downed) and 7 Mitchells were damaged in the attacks. The 130th IJNAF Base Force had light losses and an Invader was damaged in a strike. Artillery exchanges throughout the day resulted in heavy Japanese casualties and no harm being done to the Allies.

Near Kendari the Japanese ships were attacked by 9 X PB4Y who hit an AK with 3 bombs, setting it ablaze and doing heavy damage to the vessel. A short time later 16 X B-24J, 16 X PB4Y, 11 X A-26B and and 106 X P-38J arrived and attacked the shipping resulting in the following chaos.
AK Mie Maru 8 shell hits, 7 bomb hits, sunk
AK Jinbu Maru 24 shell hits, 7 bomb hits, sunk
AK Teshio Maru 8 shell hits, 12 bomb hits, sunk
AK Oyama Maru 16 shell hits, 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK Fukuei Maru 4 shell hits, 9 bomb hits, sunk
MSW Seki Maru #3 4 shell hits
AK Tokihime Maru 24 shell hits
AK Gisho Maru 4 shell hits, 1 bomb hit, on fire
AK Panama Maru 12 Shell hits, on fire
AK Shinsoku Maru 28 shell hits, 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
AK Jinmu Maru 16 shell hits, 1 bomb hit, on fire
AK Hyuga Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage

The SS Tautog attacked an AK and PG 17 miles S of Soc Trang, hitting the freighter with a torpedo that did heavy damage.

Tomorrow, weather permitting the Flying Deuces will hit Taipei. Stick wants to do some harm to the Japanese and a ground attack mission is better than CAP patrols. He still longs for that elusive first kill though.

Ed's Old Gals are on the prowl as IJN surface assets have been spotted in the Okinawa area. His orders are keeping him on a tight leash and 2 other SAGs are linking up with his and the carriers. He's chomping at the bit, but orders are orders and his ships are a slow and thirsty TF.

Harry sits and listens to Admiral King as the British plan is presented to him. A move that does anything is better than having an entire area stalemated forever, thinks Truman.

Combat

Near Hakodate a Coronado spotted an AK, claiming a hit.

The SS Stingray tracked an AK and PG 82 miles SE of Soc Trang and made a successful attack hitting the AK with 2 torpedoes doing heavy damage and setting it ablaze.

The SS Tunny tried and failed to attack a lone AK 21 miles E of Belitung.

The SS Lancetfish was hunted by 4 DDs 30 miles E of Okinawa. The sub stubbornly didn't flee and was rewarded with a BB thought to have been the Mutsu eating a torpedo. 3 PCs then hunted the sub, but failed to find her. It was an understatement to say that the sub's crew was disappointed that only 1 fish hit the BB.

The SS S-30 started her day with a surface attack on a lone AK 97 miles SE of Banjarmasin scoring 2 hits with the deck gun and 3 torpedo hits, sinking her prey.

The SS Narwhal was pounced on by 5 DDs near Balikpapan as the sub was exiting the area after sowing her mines. She has moderate systems damage and heavy flooding, but the crew is fighting for the sub's life and it is thought that they can make a port, if the pumps don't fail.

Gumma was struck by 141 X B-29 and they were intercepted by 3 X Zeke, 39 X Shinden, 18 X Frank and 22 X Tony. The bombers absorbed the loss of 41 planes and 59 damaged as the fighters flew into the AA fire with the big birds. A Zeke, 21 Shindens (2 downed), 4 Franks (7 downed) and 10 Tonys (1 downed) were damaged. The Nakajima engine factory was very lightly damaged.

Toyama was bombed by 143 X B-29 (1 damaged) who ran into a George and a Frank who made a half hearted attack with the Frank taking damage. The Mitsubishi engine factory was moderately damaged.

Ichang was flying a lone George when 128 X B-25J (1 downed, 4 damaged) and 25 X P-40N arrived. The George ran and the airfield was moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions seen, 2 Dinahs, 4 Anns, 1 Sonia and 2 Nicks were destroyed and casualties were placed at moderately heavy.

Georgetown was swept by 16 X Spitfire VIII who attacked 8 X Zero and 25 X Zeke. 4 Zeros and 3 Zekes were splashed at no cost to the Allied fighters.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division absorbed light losses from an air attack.

At Clark Field the IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade took heavy casualties from an air raid in which 2 Invaders were downed and 9 others damaged.

At Naga the IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was subjected to very heavy losses from 3 air strikes made on it. 8 B-25Js, 5 A-26Bs (1 downed) and 2 Lightnings (1 downed) were damaged in the attacks. The daily shellings dished out by both sides produced no results for the Japanese and they took heavy losses from the Allied big guns.

At Taipei the 117th IJNAF Base Force had moderate casualties and 2 Corsairs were damaged in the attack on the unit.

Near Kendari 8 X PB4Y hit an AK with a bomb leaving it burning. Then 3 X PB4Y, 19 X B-24J, 8 X A-26B and 104 X P-38J arrived and pounded the shipping with the following results.
MSW Seki Maru #3 3 bomb hits, sunk
AK Tokihime Maru 8 shell hits, 5 bomb hits, sunk
AK Jinmu Maru 36 shell hits, 8 bomb hits, sunk
AK Shinsoku Maru 20 shell hits, 5 bomb hits, sunk
AK Panama Maru 32 shell hits, 2 bomb hits, sunk
AK Gisho Maru 8 shell hits, 4 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK Hyuga Maru 16 shell hits, heavy damage
Another raid of 16 X B-24J followed and they hit an AK with 7 bombs that sank the vessel.

The Lucky 11 wearily got out of Jake's Jalopy happy to be back at Saipan. Gil wonders if they're going to have to level all of Japan and what the cost will be. He's been scared of being shot down lately instead of his usual being resigned to the inevitable.

Stick's lead was shot up pretty badly, but the bird made it home safely. Now the guys are standing there in amazement looking at the plane and wondering how it stayed up. As much as Stick loves his Corsair he feels even more so now knowing that it's a tough bird that not only can dish it out, but can take it too.

Bill finally has finished his paperwork and now he heads for the wardroom and something to eat. Before he turns in he promises himself that he'll write to Sandy.

Near Hakodate a pair of AKs were attacked by 6 X PB4Y, 2 X P-51D and 12 X P-38J. 6 X Tony tried to fend the Allied planes off, losing 2 fighters. Both AKs were struck by 2 bombs each and were burning. One of the freighters was heavily damaged.

Near Kendari 17 X B-24J hit an AK with 8 bombs leaving it broken in two.

The Allied TF 28 miles N of Okinawa was attacked by 26 X Grace, 10 X Betty, 3 X Mary, 5 X Sonia and 16 X George. The Allied fighters on LRCAP never managed to intercept the Japanese planes. Between the flak and the Kamikazes 14 X Grace, 3 X Mary and 5 X Sonia are no more. The BB Wisconsin was struck by a torpedo and the BB North Carolina took 2 Kamikaze hits. Then 4 X Frances arrived and all of them were damaged as they tried to hit the BB Richelieu with torpedoes, but failed to do so. 3 X Grace then arrived and all of them were damaged as the North Carolina ate a torpedo. The SS Sea Dog lost her fight to survive as her skipper gave the orders to scuttle the boat. Survivors were picked up by another sub standing by.

Stalin has ordered a cable be sent to Tokyo expressing his concern that over 40 LCUs are based at Harbin and this appears to be an offensive gesture. He tells his generals that he want the air groups to be redeployed with an eye to Harbin. In the meantime combat units continue to be shifted as they ready for what the common soldier believes to be the inevitable attack on the Japanese.

Stick has decided that all of the places he's been stationed at have basically been the same. The weather has been different on Formosa, but all the bases have been horribly boring. Even the flying is boring, he thinks, as the CAPs go unchallenged by the Japanese. He tosses the letter from his mother aside and lays down on his bunk and falls asleep.

Gene's group is no longer bickering, but rather pushing to be the ones who find something better. He's not quite sure how it happened, but maybe when he challenged them it was a wake up call. Now he stares at all of the reports he has to go through and then he must file one of his own. He sighs and decides that after work he'll stop for a burger and a beer.

Combat

An AK hit a mine at Balikpapan and was reportedly on fire.

Matsuyama was bombed by 129 X B-29 who hit the Mitsubishi engine plant for moderately light damage.

Tokyo was swept by 52 X P-51D who slashed through the 16 X Zeke, 4 X George, 15 X Shinden, 47 X Frank and 7 X Tony like a hot knife through butter. The Mustangs lost 5 planes and 2 damaged as they splashed 7 Zekes, 4 Georges, 6 Shindens, 23 Franks (1 damaged) and 5 Tonys.

Bangkok's port was raided by 149 X Liberator VI (28 damaged) for extremely heavy damage, a huge number of secondary explosions were claimed, some of which were fuel and casualties were heavy.

Georgetown had a CAP up of 20 X Zeke when 61 X Mosquito FB.VI, 14 X P-47D, 35 X Thunderbolt II and 6 X Spitfire VIII arrived. The Allied fighters kept the Japanese planes off of the bombers downing 9 Zekes and damaging 3 others. The AA fire was light and inaccurate. The airfield was moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions observed and personnel losses were thought to have been moderate.

Naga was attacked by 38 X B-17E (1 damaged) and 66 X B-24D (2 damaged) for heavy damage to the airstrip, many secondary explosions and light casualties. The IJA 16th Division had negligible losses from Allied aircraft. 2 Mitchells and 4 Invaders were damaged. The 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hit 4 times by Allied air power for heavy casualties. 19 Invaders, 2 Lightnings (1 downed) and 3 Mitchells were damaged in the attacks. The 130th IJNAF Base Force was hit twice for moderate losses at the cost of a Lightning and an Invader downed and 2 Mitchells damaged. Japanese artillery accomplished nothing and the Allied artillery inflicted moderate casualties on the Japanese.

At Taipei the Keelung Fortress, had light losses from an air raid in which 4 Corsairs were damaged. Allied troops stormed the Japanese defenses, taking a little ground at the cost of moderate casualties to both sides.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division had very light casualties from an air raid.

At Clark Field the IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade took heavy losses and 2 Lightnings, 9 Mitchells and 3 Invaders were damaged.

6 X PB4Y hit a BB thought to have been the Haruna with a bomb near Macassar.

About 21 miles NW of Naha 9 X Grace, 4 X Betty and 11 X George attacked the Allied TF. All but 2 Graces were destroyed by the CAP of 347 Hellcats (1 downed, 2 damaged) and 19 Corsairs.

Truman has OKed the movement of the specially trained B-29 unit to the Marianas. They have specially modified planes that can deliver the new Atomic bomb, if Harry gives the go ahead.

Jay has heard the scuttlebutt that things are going to heat up at Naga soon. The reason for this is that the Allied forces there are to be reinforced by another infantry division soon. He can't wait to be able to get out of his little hole that's more like a tub to hold water. He wonders if the damned rains will ever let up. The guys were discussing the usefulness of their ponchos and Jay declared that it's just to hot to use it and he thought it was “better wet than sweat.”

The Helena finally has orders to head south out of the Aleutians as an escort for some CVEs. Jeff is overjoyed as he's been going nuts trying to come up with things to keep the crew's morale up while they just sat in port.

Combat

The SS KXI was trying to get into position to attack an AK being escorted by 2 PCs and 5 MSWs 94 miles S of Balikpapan when she was detected and attacked. A short time later the sub managed to score a hit on the AK which did heavy damage and caused a fire to erupt. The escorts reacquired her and pounded away unmercifully, sinking the Dutch sub.

Taipei was bombarded by Ed's Old Gals who caused moderate airfield damage, very heavy port damage, a very large number of secondary explosions were reported (some were fuel) and heavy casualties. The Allied assault swept the Japanese defenders aside, inflicting heavy losses on them while the attackers took moderate casualties of their own. The base is now in Allied hands.

The SS Roncador, 32 miles W of Sasebo, crossed paths with the CVL Shoho and 2 DDs. The sub struck the carrier with 2 torpedoes that resulted in the loss of a CVL for the IJN.

The SS S-47, 29 miles S of Balikpapan, came across a lone AK that the sub hit with 2 fish causing it's demise. Later another solitary AK was spotted, but the sub couldn't manage to attain a favorable position from which to launch an attack. In the afternoon the sub successfully attacked an AK, hitting it with 2 torpedoes that sank the target.

Naga was bombed by 38 X B-17E, 66 X B-24D and 46 X P-38J for heavy airfield damage, light damage to the port, many secondary explosions were claimed (some fuel) and moderate personnel losses. Another raid of 44 X B-24D (2 damaged) and 44 X B-24J (1 damaged) followed a short time later and added heavy damage to the airstrip, many secondary explosions were seen and casualties were placed at very light. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was pounced on 4 times during the day by Allied planes who inflicted heavy losses on the unit. A Corsair, 11 Invaders and 7 Mitchells were damaged in the raids. Japanese artillery did no harm to the Allies and the Japanese had heavy casualties from the Allied big guns.

At Clark Field the IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade was attacked twice by Allied aircraft for heavy losses. 3 Lightnings, 24 Mitchells (2 downed) and 5 Invaders were damaged in the attacks.

The BB Haruna and a CA 81 miles SE of Kendari were attacked by 11 X PB4Y (5 damaged) and 8 X Kittyhawk III, but the bombs all missed. Then 6 X PB4Y and 8 X Kittyhawk III tried their luck and also missed while having 4 Liberators take damage. As soon as they departed another strike appeared consisting of 20 X PB4Y (1 downed, 10 damaged), 22 X B-24J (2 damaged) and 117 X P-38J (8 damaged). They did the following damage to the Japanese fleet.
CL Oi 12 shell hits
BB Kongo 1 bomb hit
CL Agano 12 shell hits, 1 bomb hit, on fire
CA Mikuma 24 shell hits, on fire
BB Haruna 1 bomb hit
CA Haguro 12 shell hits, 1 bomb hit
DD Hamakaze 4 shell hits, 1 bomb hit
DD Akebono 20 shell hits
DD Ikazuchi 20 shell hits
DD Yamagumo 16 shell hits, on fire
DD Makinami 16 shell hits

Bill reads the intercepts and knows that orders to set sail will be given soon if the Japanese ships don't reverse course. He doesn't like the idea of the Mighty Mo sailing into harm's way before some things have been repaired, but in war the greater needs speak the loudest.

Gil falls asleep thinking of the mission targeting Nagoya tomorrow. It's a big industrial center and it's supposed to be heavily defended. Gil tosses and turns unable to conk out thinking of all the water between Japan and Saipan.

Admirals Vian and Sommerville consult and both agree that the RN is prepared to take the fight to the Japanese. They have the shared concern of having to protect the invasion fleet and depending on the Army to secure a port from which the RN will be able to refuel and rearm from. This is no Med or Atlantic as the distances are a stretch for their ships.

Stalin is in no mood to wait for Tokyo's reply to his cable and he's sorely tempted to unleash his army on the Japanese.

The British began demobilization.

Ike got a hero's welcome in Washington DC.

Combat

Nagoya was bombed by 109 X B-29 who braved the 35 X Frank and 14 X Tony that struck them before the AA fire added to their misery. 3 Franks (21 damaged) were downed and 12 Tony were also damaged while the big bombers lost 5 planes and 48 more were damaged. Another wave of 42 X B-29 followed and they faced 30 X Frank and 7 X Tony. 2 Franks (10 damaged) and a Tony (5 damaged) were shot down and then the flak went to work. 2 Superforts were destroyed and were 18 damaged. The third wave of bombers was comprised of 129 X B-29. 16 X Frank and 7 X Tony attacked the bombers losing 3 Franks (1 damaged) and a Tony (2 damaged). The ground fire continued to be heavy and accurate and a total of 2 bombers were lost and 27 damaged. The fourth wave arrived and 13 X Frank and 6 X Tony faced the 194 X B-29. 4 Franks (5 damaged) and a Tony (2 damaged) were lost and 6 B-29s went down and 17 were damaged from all causes. All told the damage to Nagoya's manpower was extremely heavy.

At Gili Gili the port was raided by planes for light damage and some secondary explosions were reported. The IJA 21st Division was jumped by aircraft for moderate casualties.

At Naga the IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade took extremely heavy losses from a few air raids. 3 Invaders (2 downed), 1 B-17E, 1 B-24J, 3 P-38Js and a Mitchell were damaged in the attacks. The daily artillery exchanges produced the usual results of the Allies have no losses and the Japanese sustained heavy casualties.

At Clark Field the IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade had heavy casualties from an air strike that lost a B-25J (19 damaged).

The SS Gar, 17 miles SE of Belitung, attacked 3 AKs and 5 MSWs hitting an AK with 2 torpedoes that sank it.

Near Taipei the Allied troops attacked the Japanese and both sides had moderate losses.

Cables have been going back and forth between Moscow and Tokyo. Stalin has expressed his concern about the huge concentration of Japanese forces at Harbin and claimed that this appeared to be offensive in nature. The Japanese reply was one of a counter accusation concerning the large number of Soviet troops so close to Harbin. Both sides seem to be intent on keeping their forces in place and waiting for the other guy to blink.

Having plastered Nagoya the Lucky 11 are happy to be back at Saipan. They learn that somehow no crews were lost, though about 9 planes went to the junk heap. Gil writes a letter to Elaine and then falls asleep on his cot only to be awakened by the guys as they are heading to the mess hall. He joins them, but is unusually quiet as his thoughts are centered on Pittsburgh.

The Palawan continues to unload at Bataan. Red sits in the radio shack with his feet up on the desk listening to music when Cookie enters and lights up a smoke. He puffs away, not saying a word as he listens to Glenn Miller's band playing String Of Pearls. When the tune ends he asks Red is he'd like to go ashore. They take off when the skipper leaves the ship and of course Lucky is with them. There's not much to see or do here, but it's a change of scenery. Red feels like he's old as he looks at a group of soldiers passing them. “Is it me or is the Army robbing the cradle?” asks Red. Cookie laughs and says that they're probably a year or 2 younger than Red is, but they haven't had the taste of war yet and that'll age them.

Combat

A Betty attacked the SS Spearfish 97 miles S of Tokyo and the sub reported being hit. The sub will try for a friendly port as she has moderate systems damage and heavy flooding.

The SS Templar tried and failed to attack 2 PGs and 2 PCs 85 miles SE of Singapore. The sub tried again later, but was detected as she tried to maneuver into position. The sub was brutally bashed and she'll now head back to be repaired as she sustained light systems damage and a little flooding.

The SS S-18 missed getting into position to attack an AK 92 miles S of Banjarmasin, but the 2 PCs and 5 MSWs didn't find her. The sub then attacked again a few hours later scoring a torpedo hit that triggered a fire on the AK.

Nagoya underwent a fighter sweep, a day later than needed, consisting of 62 X P-51D who slashed through the 10 X Frank that were up. All of the Franks were splashed in the one sided battle.

At Gili Gili the port was attacked by Allied planes for heavy damage, some secondary explosions were seen and casualties were placed at light.

At Naga the IJA 103rd Division was hit by Allied aircraft for moderate losses as a Mitchell and an Invader were damaged. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade had the misfortune to be attacked 3 times by Allied air power for very heavy losses and the Allies had 2 Corsairs, 2 Lightnings, 5 Mitchells and 3 Invaders were damaged in the raids. Allied artillery barrages inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese and the Allies escaped harm from the Japanese artillery.

At Clark Field the IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade had moderate casualties and the Allies lost 2 B-25Js and 13 more damaged. The IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade was struck twice by Allied planes for moderate losses, a Mitchell was downed and 25 were damaged.

Ominato was swept by 15 X P-51D who ran into 1 X Rufe, 9 X Zero and 25 X Tony. A Mustang was lost and 1 Rufe, 3 Zeros and 2 Tonys were shot down.

A pair of AKs 103 miles SE of Shanghai were unsuccessfully attacked by 6 X PB4Y and 68 X P-38J.

The SS Capitaine found a pair of PGs escorting an AK 14 miles E of the Amami Group and she hit the freighter with 2 torpedoes causing heavy damage and fires.

At Taipei another Allied attack on the Japanese squeezed the defenders into a shrinking pocket and inflicted heavy casualties on them while the attackers sustained moderate losses.

Some of Ed's detached Old Gals have been ordered to lend some muscle to the impending amphibious attack to be staged at Manila. Troops are loading as the BBs sail. He's not thrilled about splitting up his force, but orders are orders.

Sam has heard rumors that the division will be getting orders and that they'll be leaving Tori Shima. He doesn't put much stock in the scuttlebutt and yet he finds himself wanting to believe it this time.

Elaine has agreed to go with her father to a Pirate's game during their next home stand. She doesn't really like baseball, but for her father she'll go. She sets aside the newspaper and wonders why the Japanese haven't given up the fight yet. She read about a stalemate at a place called Naga and the expected battle for the retaking of another place named Clark Field. These names and places mean nothing to her, she just wants Gil to come back to her.
