American Engrish is easy. It's Engrish Engrish that is stupefyingly arcane. That's why they did not need Navajo code talkers. They could just say things like "have a skeg" and the wee Jap dobbers wouldn't have a clue.

Battle of the titans (cont)

We send some PT boats to Ishigaki which is evidently being reinforced by LYB troops coming ashore. Just to show off, they don't use their torps.

Day Time Surface Combat, near Ishigaki at 90,66, Range 1,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
xAKL Shoryu Maru, Shell hits 2
SC CHa-52, Shell hits 18, and is sunk
SC CHa-55, Shell hits 5, and is sunk

Allied Ships
PT-65
PT-103
PT-231
PT-236

How fun would it be to sink something with a .50 cal? Or maybe they have something bigger in June 43?

Now the big stuff. The impudent LYB's send the CVL and Soryu after our retreating carriers. And they flew in new air groups too. No CAP from Wasp. Some CAP flies over from nearby Batan Is.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Batan Island at 86,70

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid detected at 80 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 34 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 2
A6M3a Zero x 10

The DD's at Horycrappo-jima attract some vals. They have no CAP. They just have AAA and tr\wisting and turning.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Miyako-jima at 91,66

More Vals

Even Marys go after the DD's. And then some Herens in a daytime raid on the "port" which is really 5 empty oil drums tied together.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Miyako-jima at 91,66

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid detected at 39 NM, estimated altitude 2,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 14 minutes

Summary (excluding Burma and Bay of Bengal, which was pretty fun): Neither side scores any hits on important ships. JJ loses way more aircraft. We gain a lodgement on Formosa. Horycrappo-jima is protected from a counter landing another day. Our transports reach safety at Batan and Vigan.

Port Blair: After the aborted landing yesterday, the amphibious group (minus 2 damaged AP's from Nellie attacks) turn around and headed back to Port Blair. They arrived ahead of the surface group also ordered back. JJ had evidently detached a few DD's from the Atago TF. Fortunately a daylight fight. Akikaze sunk. Tawakaze wrecked. Estimated time to target is 30 minutes

In the afternoon, Shropshire takes another and a Dutch CLAA as well.

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Port Blair at 46,58

Now, some might think a cheap gag about Indian troops and a "call center" to be racist. Not so. Only if we use offensive accents. This was actually the signals company of 50th Indian Para Br.

Another FOW question (the concept not the person).

When you get intel on a TF movement direction by mouseover, it pertains to the last air or submarine report and NOT to the orders entered by the WJD player with the last turn, correct?

It looks like he is building a defensive line exactly as the Cap' expected. Now I wonder the state of these forces. Are these defeated forces or has the IJ brought in fresh reinforcements.

I am somewhat surprised that the IJ did not abandon Mandalay sooner and establish this line. Thus I am still suspect the state of these troops.

Although bombing does not produce a lot of casualties in the jungle hexes .. it will produce disruption ... and disruption adjusts AV downward leading to odds that cause retreat.

AFAIK. Often times the mouse-over shows no movement direction.

***********Near Karenko, Formosa, May 12, 1943(c)*************

Well-tanned IJN officer: Sushi? Miro, you crazy son of bitch. Japan people on Formosa not-ah have-ah money.

Man in fine linen slacks: No, no Ito-san. It's for the Americans. They are the ones with the money. Can you get me the fish?

Well-tanned IJN officer: Miro, you crazy son of bitch, there war on.

Man in fine linen slacks: Look, Ito-san. I'll get you the nets and an ice maker. Tell the crew it's for the Emperor. Besides, those DE's are murder now.

Well-tanned IJN officer: What kind want?

Man in fine linen slacks: Whatever you can get. And we need attractive female sushi chefs.

Well-tanned IJN officer: Japan womans not-ah sushi chefs!

I looked up the armament on our PT boats. A fully upgraded 77ft Elko has this. Oddly, a 78ft Higgins model has two twin .50's but one less mount for the same total armament. It would still be fun to sink a IJN patrol boat with a 20mm Orelikon.

Re: the mouseover of enemy TFs:
The direction of movement is the last move detected last turn, and does not indicate the next hex they are going to this turn unless the path is a straight horizontal or diagonal route. Most movement involving vertical direction change is zig-zag, so if they went horizontal last time they will go diagonal up or down next time.

The notations on the maps are killing me :). How about some British accented interpretations of American ship names?

How much trouble do you think I would be in if I did that?

I can hear how it will go down in history:

" Never have so few had so much fun killing so many."

C'mon Capt'n, It's going to have to sting a little. The multi national Yankee Tommy team is putting on a clinic worthy of Monty Python.

Couldn't be any worse than the names US sailors make up on their own......like "Queerbarge"

Those awards in full:

The full list of 2013 Ig Nobel winners:

Medicine Prize: Masateru Uchiyama, Gi Zhang, Toshihito Hirai, Atsushi Amano, Hisashi Hashuda (Japan), Xiangyuan Jin (China/Japan) and Masanori Niimi (Japan/UK) for assessing the effect of listening to opera on mice heart transplant patients.

Psychology Prize: Laurent Bègue, Oulmann Zerhouni, Baptiste Subra, and Medhi Ourabah, (France), Brad Bushman (USA/UK/, the Netherlands/Poland) for confirming that people who think they are drunk also think they are more attractive.

Joint Prize in Biology and Astronomy: Marie Dacke (Sweden/Australia), Emily Baird, Eric Warrant (Sweden/Australia/Germany], Marcus Byrne (South Africa/UK) and Clarke Scholtz (South Africa), for discovering that when dung beetles get lost, they can navigate their way home by looking at the milky way.

Safety Engineering Prize: The late Gustano Pizzo (US), for inventing an electro-mechanical system to trap airplane hijackers. The system drops a hijacker through trap doors, seals him into a package, then drops the hijacker through the airplane's specially-installed bomb bay doors through which he is parachuted to the ground where police, having been alerted by radio, await his arrival.

Physics Prize: Alberto Minetti (Italy/UK/Denmark/Switzerland), Yuri Ivanenko (Italy/Russia/France), Germana Cappellini, Francesco lacquaniti (Italy) and Nadia Dominici (Italy/Switzerland), for discovering that some people would be physically capable of running across the surface of a pond - if those people and that pond were on the Moon.

Chemistry Prize: Shinsuke Imai, Nobuaki Tsuge, Muneaki Tomotake, Yoshiaki Nagatome, Hidehiko Kumgai (Japan) and Toshiyuki Nagata (Japan/Germany), for discovering that the biochemical process by which onions make people cry is even more complicated than scientists previously realised.

Archaeology Prize: Brian Crandall (US) and Peter Stahl (Canada/US), for observing how the bones of a swallowed dead shrew dissolve inside the human digestive system.

Peace Prize: Alexander Lukashenko, president of Belarus, for making it illegal to applaud in public, and to the Belarus State Police, for arresting a one-armed man for applauding.

Probability Prize: Bert Tolkamp (UK/the Netherlands), Marie Haskell, Fritha Langford. David Roberts, and Colin Morgan (UK), for making two related discoveries: First, that the longer a cow has been lying down, the more likely that cow will soon stand up; and second, that once a cow stands up, you cannot easily predict how soon that cow will lie down again.

Public Health Prize: Kasian Bhanganada, Tu Chayavatana, Chumporn Pongnumkul, Anunt Tonmukayakul, Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, Krit Komaratal, and Henry Wilde (Thailand), for the medical techniques of penile re-attachment after amputations (often by jealous wives). Techniques which they recommend, except in cases where the amputated penis had been partially eaten by a duck.
