Better than the first game in terms of of unit organization, as bad if not worse in movement planning and execution. Aggressiveness HAS to be turned down to keep the AI from flinging its units all over the map. I swear, if I didn't know better I'd have thought that the entire South was trying to escape to Canada. It's better playing as the South for now because the Union AI at least attempts to strengthen its position while building up forces strong enough for offense operations.

I'm sure it'll be great after a patch or two. Remember, the first game took a couple of years to get shaped into the awesome game that it is. But right now the AI is just goofy, especially on high aggression. Athena ends up just tossing small raids and attacks in all directions with little regard for planning or logistics.

AI's can never equal even an intermediate player IMHO. Play PBEM to truly enjoy this great game.

AI is being tweaked in the patch. So are some other things

This can't be stressed enough, all the AGE games shine in PBEM.

Ignoring current issues in ACW, in general I find a mix of 'hard', more time, and a low level of knowledge (to stop deep raids) works to give a good challenge from the AI in other AGE games. More time is particularly important

+1 on those settings, above.

I find the AI to be a strong point of Ageod games. Due in part to the simultaneous resolution, I sometimes think the AI is cheating, but usually just my bad planning. The AI takes you by surprise more than any other game I can think of - at the moment

AI aggressivity is toned down in the first patch, but you can lower it too with the options panel.

I agree with the above impressions. As it stands, the main AI fault (IMHO) is deep raids into enemy territory. I'm talking division, corps, and/or army strength raids. I rarely pursue outright, as these raids are often so deep (in CW1 a Confederate army charged up to Buffalo, NY! I'm seeing similar behavior in CW2) that they run out of supplies. This allows me to hit them in a couple turns with a couple strong divisions and completely destroy the raid force, sometimes capturing artillery and supply wagons, too. (BTW, saw similar actions in PON, too.)

Is it cheating when you take advantage this way??? Hummm... I just wish the AI wouldn't take these actions without leaving a line of retreat/supply. I'll try adjusting the AI through options a bit (more than I have).

Other than this, the AI sometimes outright surprises me, however.

I've got the AI set to the lowest aggression with no detection bonus and it's still flinging forces at me in suicidal raids. Looks like I'll have to wait on the patch before this game starts to be playable.
