I'm thinking of getting this game, but what's going to make it fun for me is a competent AI opponent and, to a lesser degree, a competent AI assistant. Putting aside all the usual caveats that a computer AI is never going to be as smart as a human, my feeling is that games rarely push the boundaries of what a computer AI can be, relying on graphics or multiplayer to deflect from criticisms of insufficient investment in AI development. Or a rushed development meaning that the AI was never developed properly with the full game feature set. Since none of these excuses seem relevant here (minimalist graphics, no multiplayer, a decade in development), I'm hoping that the AI provides a strong and realistic opponent. Seems too much to ask, but I guess if any game was going to have one, it would be this one. Any opinions yet?

I'm having issues with the AI assistant.

Getting back manual control has been difficult in some cases. Some RTB problems, Not being able to manually turn off a fire control radar despite having the parent passdown & ENCOM stuff unchecked and no current target, the auto-attack wasting extra missiles after it just killed it's target, things of that nature. Still needs some issues worked out, from my experiences in the tutorial.

Can hardly wait for the mutiplayer option/add-on then we can play with the real pro's. Actucally live "admirals".......don't get me going on the possbility of team play!!! :)

That will be incredible. I'm still worried about how larger scenarios will play out, though, as we're dealing with a real-time game with free pause and time compression.

Hi! I think, after been testing CMANO for more than a month that the question has to be "how smart are the scenario designers?"... The even editor in the sim is quite powerful and probably will became more powerful since the dev team is working to improve it.... And the difference between get bored by a null AI plan and being beaten by the damm machine is going to be how we'll designed the scenario is...

The TacAI, meaning the management of individual units, its tactics, procedures and sensor use is the best I have ever seen in a game... But the problem with this kind of games was to be able to make the AI to follow a coherent plan involving more than one unit by itself... CMNAO is able to be a real challenge to the human player thanks to event editor...

Most of the problems that new players are noticing and will notice in the short future are due to misunderstanding of the interface (i.e. this unit is under manual control, automatic control, is going to follow a mission or is detached from the mission...).

Specially hard are going to be small scenarios with not too many units where the AI is playing defense... well, in that arena prepare yourself to be beaten merciless.

Edited to correct several "improvements" done by the IPad autocorrect functionality

Good comment on scenario design and intelligent use of the AI, Blas de Lezo. The more human cunning a scen editor can embed into a scenario the more challenging that experience will be for the player.
