I was able to create a couple custom scenarios using the editor and the import units functions, all played out well. When I create a new blank scenario and add red and blue sides with hostile postures with red being computer controlled, red never fires.

As a test I dropped two f-14 1977 Iran jets with light loadout, one red one blue. Red has radar on by default and detects me, but never fires a shot. What did I miss in this simple process?

It needs to further ID the target as hostile.

If you want it to skip that check and just shoot at whatever it detects use the shoot at non hostile's ROE.

Would it have not id's it as I fly straight towards it and right past it? Now they are doing circles around each other :)

I see what you mean now when I switch back to red side using add / edit sides I see he has me marked still as bogey 1 non-hostile yet. Over on the right I have engage non-hostiles as yes though. How do I setup a simple scenario with two jets like this, one being AI that can auto detect and classify me?

I'd create one AAW patrol mission for each side assigning each aircraft to it. The aircraft will search and attempt to intercept a detected target, ID it and if hostile shoot at it.

If you want the other side to take a pass on the ID and posture check:

You could use the non hostile ROE to get them to shoot at each other if you don't require an ID.
Or if you'd like the other side to instantly ID you just right click your unit and select unit is autodetectable.

I'd upload my save if I knew how but I think you hit on what I'm trying to do, blue unit has unit auto detectable checked, and engage non-hostile is on for Red, but still red will not fire even though he has now marked me as hostile since checking the unit detectable box on blue. I don't want to create patrol missions rather just a jet on jet encounter with the AI controlling red and already preset hostile to me.

Here's the steps I'm taking and thanks for the help too

1) Create blank scenario
2) Add Red and Blue side, set red and blue hostile towards each other
3) On red set ROE to yes for engage non-hostile as well as computer controlled
4) Place the same jet one red one blue on the map
go

I can't make it work, even after firing a sparrow at the red jet and waiting for a time when it missed it still won't attack me. If I create a patrol mission as you suggest though yes it does attack, so either I'm still doing something wrong or it's not working as expected without missions.

Ok when you get into range try firing using manual attack. The manual attack dialog will tell you why its not. We have an entire section of the manual explaining the various reasons.

Our weapons and guidance models are fairly detailed so you must meet parameters to manually fire. This is why in some cases the AI (mission editor or auto attack) is better as it tries to put the aircraft there.

It's able to fire both sparrows and phoenix, and does so on manual command. I notice it's status though is unassigned (airborne) so I'm thinking going back to what you initially said it requires a mission in order to work even though it's detected me hostile it remains unassigned.

So when I create a mission such as air patrol and assign it , it will immediately attack and I test that. Just to clarify though my question initially really is so I can't just drop two aircraft on a map and set them hostile and expect an attack even with the unit is auto detectable. So every AI unit will require a mission in order to work (if true will it remain this way or is it a fix for another patch)?

Yes, it does seem that without at least one unit on a mission they won't engage. After a lot of tweaking to get units to engage I set up this little test (see attached). Two warships well within range of each other. Both see each other as hostile. They're even both auto-detectable. They'll go hours without a reaction. Assign one to a patrol mission and it will launch an attack.

No inherent AI. That took me by surprise. Means a lot more scripting than I expected for even relatively simple scenarios.

Whew I'm glad you confirmed that I was starting to feel dumb :) Adding a mission for a unit is logical. What about by default AI units that are not controlled by the computer automatically get a patrol mission assigned with an xx size reference points. Unless specified otherwise they all default with some type of AI behavior. I'll leave the coding to you and team, thanks for taking the time to work that out with me.

Yes you do have to give the AI some logic to work with in the mission editor. That is not a shortcoming by any stretch.
