does seem as if you have managed to generate the close fought game you were trying for. Still seems dynamic, but its interesting to see a fighting retreat rather than a mass run for the final defense lines

Axis Game Turn 16:

No BPs awarded but the Axis continues its drives on Leningrad and D & Z Towns. There is at least on more turn before MUD and it looks like it will be close with Leningrad.

Finland: No real change as everyone digs as deep as they can.

AGN: They are now adjacent to Leningrad and driving deep. The attacks near Velikie Luki are beginning to threaten the area. I do note that south of Lake Ilmen there are forts being constructed.

AGC: They have pushed to the outskirts of Smolensk. It is a slow grind that is causing severe casualties on both sides. A pocket has formed in the last hold outs in the Pripet Marshes. The Gomel offensive has begun to get larger and threaten the rear of the Kiev defenses.

AGS: The Panzers have reach a long section of the Dnepr to the south of Chernassy. Krivoi Rog is pocketed and Kirovograd has fallen.

Soviet Game Turn 16:

Nine more Guards RDs this turn. Another airbase HQ is forming. Uncle Joe and the Axis do not force leadership changes on the Soviet armed forces this turn.

Leningrad Front: Start to leave just a screening force along the remaining Luga River line and pull back for better Leningrad defenses. Two armies will defend Leningrad while the other two will defend the rest of the front.

Bryansk and Western Front: While the two Western Front reserve armies begin to rebuild, the rest of the Western Front continues to hold the line as well as possible. The Bryansk Front counterattacks south of Smolensk and pushes back the Axis from adjacent to Smolensk. They are also working against the Gomel offense and trying to push back the Axis Panzers.

Southwestern Front: The Pripet Marsh pocket is opened and the troops stream as quickly as possible towards the gap and freedom. The Kiev defenses try to recover and continue to defend. At least one more turn until MUD is a possibility. Hopefully it will hold.

Southern Front: Falling back in an attempt to keep from being pocketed near Nikolaev. A screen is formed in front of D & Z Towns to tie up the Axis Panzers.

I rail out the ARMs from Rostov. This will complete my planned factory evacuations so from this point forward it will only be if the Axis are threatening new industry.

I am successful in ten of eleven attacks this turn. The Axis lose (8,474/202/139/10) vs the Soviets (6,118/62/46/27). The totals to date for the Axis are (584,460/7,174/2,532/2,324) vs the Soviets (2,383,702/37,182/13,943/8,853). The Axis lost over 40K again this turn so I am trying to get back on track to the 1M mark.

The ten retreats will reduce the BP count now to four.

Finland: Quiet digging continues.

AGN: The Axis continue to drive. Their attempt to cut off the Leningrad area from land supply fails but they are adjacent to Leningrad now. The Velikie Luki area is getting more precarious.

AGS: More fighting around Kiev drives to the outskirts of the city itself. Panzer units have reached the Dnepr bend and are adjacent to both D & Z Towns. One PD is across the Dnper.

Romania: Nikolaev is pocketed with three RDs in it. The rest of the line is along the Dnper River now.

Soviet Game Turn 17:

Ivan Boldin, commanding 19A, is promoted to GENP. Another Guards RD is created.

Leningrad Front: Shifting around units to keep the strongest in the front and good reserves. It is very important to keep Shisselburg and keep the communications into Leningrad going. Hopefully next turn is MUD, but there is always that chance . . .

Northwestern Front: Digging in and doing some switching around to try and hold on to Velikie Luki. The Axis has built some forts in this area so I think it will probably be a low impact area for a while.

Southwestern Front: The pocket is opened again. The Axis IRs that made it next to Kiev are pushed back so Kiev should hold up for another two or more turns now.

Southern Front: The Kharkov MD is holding the Dnepr River between Cherkassy and D-Town. The Panzer XX that made it across the Dnepr is ZOCd in but that is about all I could do against them. The 34A from the Transcaucus MD is pulled back into reserve towards Sevastopol.

I decide to try and save some HI since I have the rail cap to do so. I rail out HI from Kiev, Bryansk, and Ordzhonoikidzegrad. These may be important in the long campaign.

I forced five retreats on the five attacks I made this turn but it is not enough to change the BP total. The Axis lose (4,796/132/49/9) vs the Soviets (2,971/25/28/16). The grand totals to date are now Axis (623,054/7,739/2,722/2,434) and Soviets (2,467,371/38,659/14,200/9,290). The Axis continue to lose about 40K per turn.

Axis Game Turn 18:

MUD everywhere but the North Soviet Zone where it is Blizzard!

Finland: Continues to be quiet.

AGN: The front lines are now regiments for the Axis. Divisions are pulled back into either refit or reserve modes. If reserve mode, then any attacks by me will be punished. If refit mode, then I could do some nice attacks on the regiments and possibly make some Axis retreats, but this would mean he is regrouping for a snow offensive which could carry some areas such as Leningrad.

AGC: Looks like he did the same for this portion of the front too. But here is the only portion of the line (other than north of Lake Ladoga) that includes the Blizzard zone just north of Smolensk.

AGS: Continues to be the same story as the northern portions. The same concerns apply in this area. The bridgehead over the Dnepr River remains only a single PD.

Soviet Game Turn 18:

Andrei Eremenko, commanding 31A, is promoted to GENP. Uncle Joe continues to purge Air Commanders as he arrests and executes Evgeny Ptukhin, the Southwestern Air Commander. He is replaced by Aleksandr Golovanov who has his initiative rating reduced to 4.

Now that it is mud weather, the lines will not change that much from the Axis to Soviet turn. So I will highlight in greater detail specific areas. We talked it over and upgraded to the newest test version (.11). I also finagled the code to turn on the Mild Winter flag. We shall see what that does come December.

Leningrad: I have good fort levels (except Shlisselburg which lost two levels in last turn's attack). But the Axis player has better troop quality and CVs. I will have to trust in the weather and terrain to help me here. It will probably fall and grant the Axis another two BPs before Turn 25 is done.

Smolensk: My five attacks against his front line regiments all succeed and push them back. All of the areas I attacked were in Blizzard so that helped, where there is Mud my penalty is just as bad as his.
