If you want someone to find your videos with a youtube search, better add the name of the game in the title and description of your videos.

Done!

How did Lightning Strike turn out for you? I had to leave about 30 minutes after the start. Hope you didn't mind a few backseat drivers!

I played Lightning strike for about 2 hours did pretty well so far! Didn't even come close to completing the scenario :D. This video is encoding now; I had no clue these things took so long to process.

Then I tested a google earth live stream utility. Its a google earth kml file that watches COMMAND gameplay on my computer and broadcasts it live into google earth on anyone's computer. It worked; but not too well. Needs a few more optimizations; it was a bit too much data for my internet connection to handle at once.

After that I played a 1980 GUIK sandbox scenario pitting a Soviet SAG (2 Kirov (CG), 3-4 DDG) vs a USAF Squadron (16xF-16) and a USN Squadron (8xE-6).
I loaded the E-6s with nukes, they didn't get close enough to the Soviet SAG to drop their powerful payload.
I created a CVBG in the sandbox that didn't really do much, too far from the action; really. I planned for the CVBG to be taken out with a nuke ASM launched from a spread of 4-5 soviet SSGN (Echo class).
I really wanted to nuke the SAG so I added some B-52 with nuke cruisemissles but they could only nuke land targets. They were very effective as jammers! I think I spawned B-52s from 1997 which means their jammers are 20 years ahead of all the radars in the 1980s setup (I tried to keep everything in the right era).

After that I tried to shoot down a satellite with F-15 ASAT! I hit it but it didn't blow up. But I DID hit it!

Edit: Everything is being uploaded to youtube currently.

Hey everyone. I've set up a website to recap youtube videos and schedule future live streams.

http://baloogancampaign.com/

I'm also going to build some Command documentation on the site. Hope you enjoy.

New video from the stream on Saturday:
  • Episode 2 Part 4 Shoot That Sat
I used F-15 Eagles armed with ASM-135 ASAT anti-satellite multi-stage missiles to shoot down an orbiting Soviet spy satellite.

A scenario you can build in about ~4 minutes by importing the installations from the CentFront entry. :D

Any chance you could consider doing a vid showing example uses of ECM, Jamming, Jammed etc?

I just wanted to chime in to thank you for these excellent videos (I watch them offline) which I have used as my main source of training in this game.

I particularly like your use of manual techniques rather than the all-powerful mission editor. The ME is great, and it works, but new players should resist the temptation to automate everything. I like to be able to automate peripheral -- but important -- missions but be able to approach primary targets manually, i.e. setting up a multi-axis and/or multi-platform coordinated attack. It is also useful to be able to launch units manually in groups, allow them to loiter (which is default behavior) and then add them to a mission. I have to point out, though, that if you had used the ME to send BARCAPs up at the very beginning of the AAR tutorial mission, you would not have lost any F-14s. Also, setting their ROE to attack unconfirmed hostiles (safe in this scenario) enables the Tomcats to use their standoff capabilities rather than confirm bandits via their TV optics; this results in 8 splashed bandits outside 20nm! I imagine there are a lot of Harpoon vets who can play effectively with no ME but it is a powerful tool.

Finally, I'd like to note how amused -- if slightly alarmed -- I am by your MASSIVE enthusiasm for nuclear weapons!

Thanks for the suggestion; I'm working on one now. :)
If anyone else has any requests, I'm going to do a few short videos throughout the week before streaming live on Saturdays. Last Saturday I broadcast for 5 hours (from 5:00pm to 10:00pm PDT); I'm going to try to top that!

My stream will have 5 (five!) times better quality as I've upgraded my internet service package to 2.5 mbps from 0.5 mbps upload. This will mean extremely crisp video!

    really! thanks for your effort!

    cheers!

I certainly prefer manual control over everything I can manage! Some scenarios are tough to play without the ME; especially setting up tanker patterns and the ilk; I find even if I don't set up a mission having the mission reference points helps remember where I put all my tankers!

I really do love nukes. Nuclear weapons have a profound impact on naval combat, EMCON becomes king as you cannot expect to survive even a single vampire or torpedo strike.

Thanks so much for all the comments, subscriptions, followers and posts! Its been a blast!

    Hi Wargamers!

I'm going to be streaming live today (Wednesday) at 5:00 pm PDT!

    Stream is located at http://www.twitch.tv/baloogancampaign

I decided I couldn't wait till the weekend to continue Operation Lightning Strike; I really wanted to continue the scenario.

After the F-16 flights dueled some JF-17 elements northern Pakistan erupts into a cacophony of active radar emitters and new bogies! The F-22s are within 150 nm of the Pakistani coast! And some new surface contacts are detected between India and Pakistan! What will happen next? I have no idea...

I've upgraded my internet service, now I get 2.5 mbps rather than 0.5 mbps upload which means a faster, higher quality stream. An example of the new quality is the upload of my first Baloogan Highlight, in which I look at offensive electronic warfare.

Time till the stream goes live is listed on the sidebar on the right.

As always I'll try to answer any questions you might have about the game or about naval operations and tactics. Please pass the word!

Stream will be located at http://www.twitch.tv/baloogancampaign

Episode 3 Part 1 If you kick the hornet's nest...

I start off Episode 3 with an overview of where I left off in Operation Lightning Strike with an overview of the AO. F-16Cs jump some JF-17 Thunders and splash some bogies while shooting though the sky at 900kts!

To quickly summarize Episode 3 I'd say overall I wasn't expecting to lose those reapers; or any F-16Cs. I'm worried that I might not have enough force at Bagram to even attempt a strike with my A-10s with laser guided bombs.

I have no clue what I did to piss off the Iranians. Well, after about 20 Tomahawks they are now EXTRA pissed off.

The F-22s are now 120nm from the Pakistani coast, my B-2s & and B-52s are about 18 hours away from being ready to take off with their load of decoys, stand off bunker busters and cluster/JDAM bombs. The B-2s are for hunting down TELs (think scuds in the First Gulf War).

As soon as I started losing F-16s I just wanted to HIT THEM HARD so I made a hasty TLAM and Tactical Tomahawk attack without being careful.

And I've played this one scenario for about 7 hours now! I'm going to FINISH IT!!! I might need to stream more often, I want to cover new things on Saturday.

It was a blast! Thanks for watching!

Baloogan, don't forget that those watching your vids offline cannot hear the other half of the conversation, so, for example, I still do not know the key combo for renaming zones, which we can hear you talking about in the second tutorial mission play through. Could you say what that key combo is and bear in mind that you may need to repeat information mentioned by live streamers if you want people to hear it offline.

Meanwhile keep up the good work.

Baloogan, I've really enjoyed your streams. They're a great way to get Command folks watching a game and exchanging ideas & info!

Your current play through Lightning Strike is, however, a great example of the challenging nuances that Command can present. When playing Command I think a good way to start is to follow the standard military METT-TC format to examine how to best approach the situation.

M(ission): Destroy the nuke bunker and TELs.

E(nemy): Pakistani Extremists, though Pakistan, Iran and India may react to American forces in their region or airspace.

T(roops) and Forces Available: Subs, destroyers and aircraft at several different bases.

T(errain) and Weather: National boundaries are important. Cartography may be a factor in the end game.

    -T(ime): 48 hrs

C(ivilian Issues): Not really applicable this time, beyond political concerns mentioned above.

Just parsing the mission into this format tells a lot about how to proceed. Next consider the basic principles of war ...

Objective: As mission above. Add in that you want to keep the conflict from expanding to other actors (India, Iran...) and that you need to consider execution of your mission in such a way that the nukes can't be launched.

Offensive: Be the one to dictate the action and maintain the initiative. Your forces may not be adequate to sustain a two day offensive against all of Pakistan, for example. A shorter, sharper effort may be the key.

Mass: Have the forces you need to overwhelm opposition and achieve your objective in place when needed. In Lightning Strike your forces are by and large spread all across the theater. You need to get key units in place to execute your mission at the moment they're required.

Economy of Force: While achieving Mass you want to make sure you're not over-doing it and tasking units to the mission that are needed or more effective elsewhere. Select the right tool(s) to accomplish the task effectively and efficiently. In Lightning Strike you'll want to think about what the raid on the airbase is going to look like. Who's providing fighter cover? Who's doing preliminary ISR? Who's attacking the targets? Do they need SEAD, jamming, AEW support? From who?

Maneuver: How do you place and move these forces in a way that is of an advantage to you and puts your enemy at a disadvantage? Looking at the map most ways to the rebel airbase are blocked by ostensibly neutral countries that will fight back at a violation of their territory. Except from the Afghan border. The way in from Bagram is lightly defended and close to the objective. Placing air units to stage out of Bagram and Kandahar would make sense. Getting the right tools there (Economy of Force and Mass) will take time, though.

Unity of Command: Not a problem in this scenario. The player is the commander of all available forces.

Security: Make sure your forces are protected and your intent is not discovered by the enemy until it's too late. This means staying clear of trouble for as long as you can while you set up your forces for the raid that achieves your objective. Fly around Iran, India and Pakistan while you gather your forces at Bagram. Don't make any offensive actions until you're ready or you're forced to. Be ready to respond to an escalation if necessary.

Surprise: Move quickly and achieve the mission quickly. Don't give opponents time to react to your raid and be ready with counters when they do.

Simplicity: Put together a simple and effective plan. You'll need to observe the rebel airbase to locate all your targets. Does this happen before or during the raid? What then destroys them and with what? How do they get there? What's needed to support them? The simpler the answers to these questions the less Murphy can interfere.

    Thanks, $trummer.

My intent is to show that the fundamental approaches to IRL operations are sound in Command.

I think Lightning Strike is a particularly good scenario in that it provides a bunch of assets from all over the region. The player could be tempted to try and use them all to win the scenario, but in the end they can accomplish the mission using just a fraction of those assets by applying the principles of war.

As gamers we often see resources as being necessary to success and therefore placed in a scenario for a reason. With this in mind we feel the need to use everything given to us.

Lightning Strike is cool because it gives us resources to forge multiple solutions to the problem - use bombers from DG, use tac aircraft from Bagram & select Gulf bases, etc. Better yet using all those resources has the potential to complicate or widen the conflict, so the player that shows restraint and subtlety by settling for one approach has an advantage.

    Hi $trummer,

I did forget quite a few useful things in my first two episodes. I've tried to fix as many problems as I could in episode 3. I've upgraded the video quality 5x as well as tried to read out what I'm responding to from the chat. Its been a learning process for me to figure out how to do this all right.

I hope you don't mind if I snag your post for my website :D What a great write up!

I did get frustrated with losing my F-16s at one point and just wanted to kill some enemy targets... which didn't work too well.
Over northern pakistan I think I've lost the initiative; I need to regain it somehow!

Sure thing, Baloogan! Another great thing about Command is that regardless of it's faults at this point, the AI is still successful at bringing forces to bear and inflicting casualties when given the chance.

Baloogan, I've really enjoyed your streams. They're a great way to get Command folks watching a game and exchanging ideas & info!

I hope you don't mind if I snag your post for my website :D What a great write up!

I did get frustrated with losing my F-16s at one point and just wanted to kill some enemy targets... which didn't work too well.
Over northern pakistan I think I've lost the initiative; I need to regain it somehow!

    Thanks Baloogan.

...But, um, what is that key combo for renaming user-created op areas? Thanks!

I haven't had chance to watch your video's yet but hoping to tomorrow. I'm hoping they will help me get an understanding of the game better. Keep up the good work mate.
