Hmm - invest Skikuka but don't attack until you have landed small forces at hexes W and SE. That way when JJ retreats he will activate Soviet Union.

That won't really work, will it?

I think it would.

I did a little sand boxing on this and I has not worked yet. The Lybs don't retreat they just die.

**************May 21, 1943(c)***********

Formosa: WJD ships (including a BB) were spotted at Taihoku. This group likely included the Kongo class which had taken a sub torp so the transports were left unloading at Karenko. In the event, a WJD DD force showed up. An ASW group blunders into their way. Crewing an AM is almost as dangerous as crewing an LCT around these parts. We are lucky more weren't sunk.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Karenko at 87,65, Range 8,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Hagikaze
DD Yudachi, Shell hits 1
DD Usugumo, Shell hits 1

Allied Ships
AM Pursuit, Shell hits 4, on fire
AM Motive, Shell hits 4, on fire
AM Sheldrake, Shell hits 6, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
AM Token, Shell hits 6, heavy fires, heavy damage

Next, they run up against a more formidable opponent. they run away. No slaughter of LCT's tonight.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Karenko at 87,65, Range 7,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Hagikaze, Shell hits 1
DD Yudachi, Shell hits 1
DD Usugumo, Shell hits 4

Allied Ships
CL Concord
DD Fletcher, Shell hits 1
DD Cony
DD DeHaven
DD O'Bannon

Halloween party at Pocahantas Girl's house tonight. Sadly, this is for kids so there are unlikely to be any adult body parts to be seen. Almost certainly there will be adult beverages and food so I am going.

If I can find some jeans that haven't "shrunk" too much, I am going as a Hippie.

PG got a brand new Benz because she didn't want to instal the new license plate on the "old" one.

I am beginning to doubt the volleyball theory. I'm guessing this is about the Royal Navy and something going badly in the Sunda Sea. The phrasing is very Engrish.

The Sunda Sea let's out Bounty and Captain Bligh. I think we need a hint.

More Formosa Stuff: The crevah inscrutable baaahstards send in a unit to Karenko from Taihoku before our guys reach Taihoku. Now we have to fight them in mountain hex. So we send in some B-17's and B-24's from Altimonan and Aparri to bomb them. I worked really well but we did lose at least one Fort and had quite a few heavies damaged from the CAP (probably bleed over CAP from Taihoku and Takao. A Corsair sweep from Batan Is. fizzled somehow. Still not sure what the unit is, even after the aerial bombardment. Recon by bombardment, meet fog of war.

PI: The retreating Japan men horde at Lingayen was pounded badly by medium bombers and dive bombers. US 32nd ID and 7th Aus Div are trying to catch them moving down the road from San Fernando. We want the fight out in the open by Lingayen.

The airfield at Aparri is repaired. The port is repairing last. Several Air HQ's already there. Base is level 5 and building.

Ambon: We have been pounding Ambon for a few days now. We caught a few transports on the ground (probably flying out troops). No enemy CAP, just AAA. Ambon was a dangerous location along our supply corridor. Just cleaning up loose ends.

Oz: Australian forces accumulating at Broome. Should be able to eliminate the few walking dead left there soon.

The walking dead at Port Hedrand get bombed daily. It is most unpleasant, I am sure.

Solomons: B-25's from Luganville are gradually beating up the airfield at Lunga. Japan mens no fight-ah back. evidentry they not berieve this-ah main push.

Wow. Amazing how much that shot of the Kwai River bridge under construction looks like the shot in the movie.

That guy looks fantastic for 95. Sad he still feels guilt for surviving. Clearly the guilt lies elsewhere.

James Clavell used his experiences in Changi to write "King Rat". He is better know for Shogun. During an interview the interviewer asked him if the survivors of Changi ever got together for a reunion. His response was along the line of " Are you crazy? One in twenty lived!

Quite spectacular hemorrhaging of Bettys from the previous days attacks South of Formosa...all for naught.

They lost some Nells in Burma but did get through the CAP over Chittagong to sink two AP's.

Recent Allied losses. The big AP's cost more than DD's.

Question: Will shore guns from an enemy static fortress fire on our landing craft if they are merely evacuating troops (speaking here of Ishigaki)?

I don't know why the engine would distinguish between enemy landing craft arriving empty and picking up people versus landing full and dropping off people. I would assume (but don't know for sure), that a valid target would get shot at, regardless of its end mission.

We lost 3 B-24's of various flavors yesterday but reports of B-17 losses were false. Oh well, if one wishes to make an omelette one must break a few eggs.

I think either Mark Twain, Napolean, Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, Kublai Khan or Lee Iacoca said that.

Three USN fighter squadrons showed up in San Francisco. I think these are the ghosts of squadrons we lost when bad things happened to some of our carriers.

They have neither planes, pilots or CO's but they do have a really nice collection of Quonset huts and a secretary pool.

While I was working on the last turn I was listening to Stalker Girl talk to her sister on the phone. After several minutes, a sudden insight came over me.....you know...like you hear about some math guy suddenly seeing a solution to a century old mathematics problem. Boom! Just like that.

Here is my insight:

Women can talk about almost nothing for amazing lengths of time.

Signals Intercept Intelligence Question:

1) Is signals intelligence more likely to be gained from large task forces or from multiple smaller task forces?

2) Does physical distance of the offending task force from likely intercept points make a difference as it might in the real world?

3) What about enemy HQ units? Any role?*

*Pretend I didn't read the manual.
