Playing Shiloh as Union, I dissolved then re-organized and reformed several divisions. With the respect to the 2nd Union division under Wallace, the renaming convention was not consistent (see below). Other divisions seemed to keep their original designations. Maybe a bug?

It's not a bug, it's just that "Forces" and "Divisions" follow different naming conventions.

"Forces" are named usually after the commander, unless it's a force that starts the scenario with a specific name, like that one. It started as the "2nd Division" of Army of TN. Divisions are simply numbered, and the number given is the next number in line, that's it.

So no bug, just different conventions.

PS: It would be nice chrome to have control over naming; in particular, it would be nice for Reb divisions to be named after commander, which was historical. "Hood's Division"

You can rename divisions (brigades, etc.), even corps. Armies take a slight trick-of-hand (as it were). If you want a specific name for an army, then have the leader in a separate stack, create the army. Then, rename the stack you want to drop the leader into -- name it what you want the army to be called (so, Grant, on his own, create army; Grant's eventual force, rename to Army of Tennessee for instance). Then, drop Grant into the force stack. Voila -- Grant is now in charge of the Army of Tennessee. However, if you drop the force into Grant's stack, his army name takes precedence.

How do you re-name a stack though? Didn't know you could do that

I believe it is Alt+Left click on the force name tab.

@ cassmj: appreciate the tip on renaming armies; it will come in handy as things get more complicated.

Still, I think my original concern is valid. If the engine renamed the unit counter, why not the stack, inspection panel and tooltip as well?

In a later turn I noticed the engine had updated the inspection panel to reflect "7th Division", but the tooltip and the stack name and stack panel still reflected the old designation; however, by the end of the game, the naming convention was consistent across all areas. As I had disbanded then reformed the division a second time, I noticed everything was now "1st Division", which would seem to indicate that the game engine reuses division designations once they become available.
