This forum seems to have dried up, so I thought I would see if anyone is still playing the game, and whether they believe it to be a finished, well rounded game with plenty of fun to be had? (Any of the iterations, let me know which one you prefer).

Yes it is good.

I personally prefer the scope of the original AJE scenarios rather than the geographically concentrated scenarios of Birth of Rome. But thats a matter of taste, as the BoR set are very different and have very different challenges.

Just sticking with AJE there are 5(? - should double check) main scenarios - 3 from the Civil Wars of the Late Republic, one on AD69-70 and the final one in the 180s (Septimus Severus et al). The Roman armies behave very different to the non-Romans (various Pontic forces in the early civil wars and Spanish tribes). The scenarios aren't balanced - so there are easier and harder factions in each scenario (usually 3 sides).

So you can learn with one, and even against the (pretty good) AI, have a real struggle with a different faction in the same scenario.

Once you feel you have exhausted all the scenarios/sides against the AI, get into PBEM. At that stage, esp in the 1vs1vs1 scenarios, things get fun and dirty very quickly.

I am not familiar with this series of games, and was wondering if the 5 games listed above all work together or are they separate installs? Is there a gold version that contains all of the games in one download version?

I'll try to clarify it for you.

Alea Jacta Est is the base game that contains its own content. Birth of Rome was the second release adding new content, yet is also a stand alone game meaning you don't need to own Alea Jacta Est to be able to play it.

The other 3 expansions (The Spartacus Revolt 73 BC, The Cantabrian Wars - 29BC, and Parthian Wars ) all add additional content but require you to also own the base game of Alea Jacta Est.

I may be wrong on this but I think that as you add the expansions they become available within the single game. I.e you don't have to load each exe individually. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this as I only have the base game.

No gold version

Its a little bit messy as both AJE and BOR can function as the base game (as Missouri_Rebel says). So either can then carry all the none base dlcs (the Spanish, Parthian and Spartacus scenarios). The good thing is you have both, you can use BoR to load up all the scenarios in both base games and all the dlcs.

So in effect, you just need to open that up and you can play any game in the entire series

Birth of Rome will not load the Cantabrian Wars expansion. I tried several times to load Cantabrian Wars to Birth of Rome and it will not work. I think as Missouri_Rebel said, only the base game of Alea Jacta Est will run the expansions.

To answer the original question posed, I find the AJE/ROME games lacking. Its very hard to explain, but the games just don't seem to have enough going on and too much of what's happening is hidden under the hood, making game play frustrating.

I really enjoy the ROP and Civ War games, and this period should make for a great game, but its not.

For example, the supply system is difficult to understand compared to the other games. It can look like units are in supplied areas, but not enough supply is making its way to the units, so they are losing supply quickly.

At any rate, not trying to be too negative, but I would look at the other titles if I was spending the dollars.
