To the powers that be, could you briefly discuss the hard plans for the growth of MWiF, if any.

In particular, will "Factory in Flames" and "Days of Decision III" be eventually incorporated? Also, this coming April, ADG will be releasing a new module, "Boats in Flames", with new units and rules. What about that one?

According to Harry in the interview with the Wargamer, Matrix has the license to develop all the WiF addon's. It all depends on how good this version sells of course

Boats in Flames? Where did you see that please? I could see nothing on the website.

A long time WiF player on BGG mentioned it. He spoke with conviction. I'm assuming he's a playtester or some other kind of insider. It is supposed to include a lot of smaller naval ships such as, destroyers, landing ships, merchant vessels, etc. He specifically mentioned that it is due out in April 2014.

I looked up the thread ... the specific mention was an April 1st release ... you might want to do the math on that. PT-Boats did appear on the newest counter sheet that isn't in MWiF, btw.

World in Flames has always been in development ever since it was first released. I expect it to always continue, both on paper and on a computer. The process rarely moves very fast; Harry specifically said in an interview that they prefer getting it right to doing it quick. People love to play it and always will, so I think there will be a bright future of continuing to improve the game.

It's software, I can't picture why they wouldn't be able to evolve this game any less than any other game gets evolved.

I'll say right now, they can also sell me any new manuals that result for it.

Hey, after 30+ years of buying the same damned role game over and over and over again, a few new manuals for a board game isn't even an issue worth bringing up.

In the recent article found on the wargamer site here: http://wargamer.com/article/3457/interview-world-in-flames-exclusive-wargamer.com-interview it is stated that the extended familly with Patton in Flames, America in Flames and Days of Decision III are all on the to do list.

I would prefer Matrixgames to finish up the expansions for Wif in the annuals and Khaki in Flames before moving on to the what-if games, but either way it is going to be great getting into exploring the gaming possibilities in the Wif family.

Cheers

My bad. He was totally kidding about Boats in Flames, and it sailed right over my head.

It's a question of money. Once MWiF has been sold, there is no incentive to develop further modules, such as Factories in Flames and Khaki in Flames. I think Matrix will continue to round out MWiF with AI and more players for netplay as a matter of good faith. But, there is no incentive for them to do fresh work for no further recompense.

Then again, it is a matter of marketing. If the powers that be determine that a large number of potential purchasers have not bought in due to the lack of these modules, they may well decide to incorporate them in order to reap those sales.

I'm just saying that once purchasers have already handed over their money, I think it is unreasonable to assume that Matrix et. al will evolve any product just for the hell of it.

No but since Matrix is already going to charge additional money for an AI there is no reason they could not charge for additional WiF modules for those that want them. So I can definitely see all the modules being done as expansions for additional money. There is no reason not to expect the other modules from being complete. Depending on how this version does of course

Additional modules can be done and probably will be marketed as DLC. Same with additional scenarios that don't make the initial cut, etc. It is a chance to continue to develop new items for the game and also keep a revenue stream coming for the company.

Harry Rowland is on record (an interview with the Wargamer magazine linked to in a stickied thread) saying Matrix is on contract with ADG to develop major expansions:

quote:

Matrix/Slitherine have a contract with Australian Design Group for all 4 games in the World in Flames series, WiF itself, America in Flames, Patton in Flames and Days of Decision and we look forward to all these games being released after the publication of WiF.[italics original]

Not to say Matrix couldn't give up on these if the sales aren't there for the MWiF base game. But as things stand they have already agreed to create them - eventually.

Harry doesn't mention anything about Factories in Flames, Khaki in Flames, the Politics in Flames political system, and the like. Here again I would say that their eventual inclusion would be contingent upon sales of the MWiF base game; where IMO stronger sales for MWiF increase the incentive to include these add-ons.
