Do most use two monitors?

I tried this on a big 32" screen and I still felt like I needed a second monitor for all the info windows.

I have an extra 17" monitor so I use that for the info windows and have the map on the big screen. With the windows out of the way I find it's much easier to grasp what's going on.

I had this longer post written but it was lost in a timeout.

Basically, it takes some time and effort to come to terms with all of the info in WiF. Many of the forms arent used as often as others and it is through familiarization that the player learns what layout works best for them. What I like is that there are endless ways the forms can be arranged, either within a single screen or multiple, that suits me best. You'll find that all of those windows aren't needed until they are and that they're there when you do.

Speaking of monitors and screens, when looking at the AARs quite often the desktop will show in the background when an info box is not in that place. Other times it shows as a black background. I like the black background, but not the desktop. Do you get to choose?
Thanks.

No.

The design is for the player to be able to place forms where ever he wants on his monitor(s). One consequence of that decision is that the desktop itself serves as a background.

I have a screen background that is almost all black, that I often switch to when I take screenshots. Perhaps that's a viable solution for you too.

Another tool that everyone might not know about is the Flyout window. It is really useful for easily viewing what units are in the hexes at higher zoom levels and for just seeing what units are in a stack. As you move your cursor over the units on the map the Flyout will change to show those units in its window.

To pull up the Flyout, double left-click in any area on the map and then move your cursor around to whatever hex with units that you want to get a better view of. Do so again to turn off the Flyouts

I installed an old 17" very fast as a second screen. I have the map on my nice big 24", and the forms which you want open all the time on the second. They are the Main form, the 2 smaller forms with map shortcuts / screen layout, and the Global map.

I can't seem to figure out how to move a stack of naval units together? I've searched the manual and not found it, I've also looking into the 'Lock Stack' thing, but found nothing explaining how to do it. For some reason, my lock stack options are grayed out. Any help much appreciated :)

Have you tried Control-leftMouseClick? There should be a form popping up where all ships are preselected to move together. You can then unselect the ones you want to leave behind.

Well, this scares me. I have a 24" 1920x1200 monitor. I don't really have room or the desire to set up a 2nd monitor. Is it still possible to have a good playing experience with a decent amount of the most important windows open on the one screen? I don't want to have the map so small I can only see three or four hexes square.

3 solutions:

1 - Ctrl-Left-Click on the port, as mentioned by Lex. That brings up the Select Units form. Then select which units you want to move. That form has filters which are helpful when there are a lot of units in the port.

2 - Double left click on an empty all-sea hex. That brings up the Naval Review Details form. Right click on the port and ignore the popup menu. The right click locks the NRD so you can select units to move from that form.

3 - Double left click on an empty land hex. That brings up the Flyouts. You can select/unselect individual units by left clicking on them in the Flyouts form (changing pages doesn't mess up which units you've already selected). If you double left click on an unselected naval unit in the Flyouts, it selects all the naval units in the Flyouts. If you double left click on a selected naval unit in the Flyouts, it unselects all the naval units in the Flyouts.

Be aware the submarines can't move with other naval units so if you select a sub and a battleship, you won;t be able to move those two units together anywhere.

EDIT: About changing pages in the Flyouts.

I use a 1920 x 1200 Monitor and it works just fine. See the AAR a Global War to see how it works out.

Very nice. But you use a 26" screen. Mine is only 24". I think it should be ok, though.

Until I bought my new monitors a week or so ago, I was developing the game on two 24 inch monitors. I had the source code on one and the game on the second. There is no problem playing when you have that much real estate. Here is one example of how to lay out the form on a 24", 1920 by 1200 monitor.

Thank you, Steve. May I ask what monitor you bought?

I will be in the market for something larger and higher resolution than 1920x1200 in the near future. I am partial to 16:10.

Two 30" Dell UltraSharp U3014.

What is strange is that now that the game is released I have so much going on, I want a third monitor. My wife thought that was very funny.

Thank you. Funny, that is the exact monitor I was drooling over just a short while ago while doing some Googling.

Unfortunately, it's out of my price range at the moment. Maybe in a few months the price will drop a bit.

I believe this was only done for debugging so you wouldn't end up trying endlessly to get a rare situation to occur for test purposes.

See? Yes, always if you set that player interface choice.

Change? Yes, same as for See, except not for NetPlay games.

I am a complete WiF newbie and I want to learn how to play this game but where is the best place to start?

- Manuals?
- Video tutorials?
- In game tutorials?

And where to go from there?

I am not a complete newb, but even so I would say the tutorials are a must. They take time to go through, but given the manuals don't seem to really tell you how to do things, I think the videos are invaluable.

I'd say the video tutorials, then probably read the tutorials and then do the interactive tutorials.

After that have a go at Barbarossa followed by Guadalcanal. If you're confident doing these you've basically mastered the system

I'm struggling against the endless forms and windows. I go to a menu or use a hotkey to open a form and they regularly appear hidden behind the map. I move my mouse over new windows that I finally manage to get on top of another window, only to have the window vanish back under. I only have one monitor, so I don't have endless screen real estate. I tried playing some more for the last six hours and I literally spent MORE than half my time just trying to move windows around to get at information or buttons. (My wife has heard me swearing and has started calling the game "Windows in Flames".)

Is there a full description of how to control the game's windows someplace? The Player's Manual just refers you to the tutorials. The Picture and Text tutorial doesn't have anything. The "Interactive Tutorial" is less than helpful in getting the big picture (I did my best to decode some of the encrypted information...I didn't learn much and had to stop before I punched my monitor. At least I know where to click to drag some of the windows now, even though I still cannot really control what is going on overall). The "Video Tutorials" just activate the "Windows Media Player Classic has stopped working" form.

Any thoughts or advice? I'm 16 hours into fiddling with the game now. I've only managed to get to 1 impulse into Nov/Dec and I still feel like I'm in a constant wrestling match with the interface.
