quote:

Armitage, a graduate of Annapolis, had been a Navy intelligence officer, assigned to Vietnamese units. He gained respect for the South Vietnamese as he worked alongside them and became fluent in the language. Then he resigned his commission and left the Navy in protest when the Nixon administration signed the Paris peace accords.

A proud but little know episode in the history of the USN.

'Last Sovereign Territory Of The Republic Of Vietnam'

If you have time listen to the audio broadcast - it's worth it.

A bunch of those ships were former USCG cutters. The little ones look like 82 footers (USCGC Point "Somethingorother"). The big one was a USCGC 311' Class (former Barnegat Class Seaplane Tender).

Kinda neat that I actually sailed on a couple of the ships in the game: USCGC Bibb (always a CG cutter - an AGC in the game), USCGC Chincoteague (a 311' cutter but formerly USS Chincoteague, an AVD seaplane tender in the game).

Chincoteague got hit in South Pacific by an IJN 250 kg bomb. Supposedly the forward engineroom was haunted by a "dungaree Chief": CPO's wore dungaree work uniforms back in WW2. I never saw the ghost but there were those in the crew who swore that they had (probably just messing with the cadets). She got transferred to the S Vietnamese Navy but the one in photo is showing a different hull number. After that she ended her active service in the Philippine Navy getting decommissioned in 1985.
