I have been unable to find, either here or in-game, a means of placing research stations/star base/defense bases at a position of my choosing.

For example, when the game recommends a defense or research base, it always places them in orbit... a feat I have been unable to duplicate and am very keen to learn. I know it doesn't have any real effect on things... it is just a way for me to alleviate some of the clutter and get a better grasp on things (I also like the idea of a 'ring' of orbital defense around a key resource)

Edit: I am playing Shadows, if that is in any way relevant.

I have OCD where my bases go as well round colonies

A.Select a constructor and order it to build what you want where you want, as long as the base size is not over construction size limits, if it is they will not be able to build it.

B.This might be the one your after
Follow exactly or it won't work
Click the colony to select it
move the mouse pointer to where you want the base / research
do not move the pointer
right hand button and move the pointer to build then select what you want to build
The base / research will be put where the pointer was when you right hand buttoned

Do not think this works with space ports though.

Does that work in orbit around the planets though? I have used that method to place stuff, but so far I have only been able to place it over the planet itself...

I would also really like a way of setting the defense bases around the planet, rather than on top of it, as they sometimes spawn all in one side, leaving the other defenseless.

And if I tell a constructor, does it still count as a planet base, with the no size limit and the 'moves with the planet'?

EDIT: Just tried it outside the planet proper, works perfectly.

I cant believe I never tried that. ಠ_ಠ

rune_trantor, Correct from what I have experienced.
Cheers

Thanks for the feedback

While handy (if somewhat cumbersome) for colonies... what about remote resource locations? Specifically, Nekros Stone and fuel locations, which to me with my limited game experience seem critical for expansion.

I've been playing around with starbase-sized gas mining facilities that offer additional protection for fuel depots off the beaten path and... and that level of construction investment often has me building research bases on the same gas giant... which in turn has me wanting a defensive ring around the whole shebang; a triangle of defensive bases in orbit around the gas giant would give my fleet the time it needs to respond.

Anyone know of a mod that might allow for such specific construction placement? It seems odd to me that with all the customization allowed in Distant Worlds, something so basic as aesthetic choice could be completely overlooked.

On a related side note (hoping to avoid a second topic post); I can't seem to get a handle on how caslon and hydrogen translate to ship fuel; my fuel storage for above-mentioned mining starbases do not consistently replenish, despite my being careful to only build on gas giants with both types of fuel elements. Sometimes the fuel storage fills immediately, while other times all I get is a small initial amount that gradually drops as the starbase uses fuel.

This is what my pre-warp fuel depot looks like:
1 Command Center
6 Small Cargo Bay
2 Docking Bay
30 Small Fuel Cell
4 Basic Space Reactor
10 Long Range Gun
6 Seeking Missile
3 Pulse Blaster
5 Hab Module
5 Life Support
2 Gas Extractor

So, for clarification, when a ship docks at a gas mining facility, does said ship take on the 'fuel' resource... or do they merely take on stored elements (i.e., either hydrogen or caslon, depending on the ships reactor type)? If the latter is the case, then I need to change starbase focus from fuel cells to cargo bays...

Note to the developers: This is the sort us useful information the Galactopedia should include... as a sort of practical counterpoint to the current staggeringly obvious observational text that explains how ships need fuel to move, and that when they run out of fuel they need to get more.
