Does anyone know whats going on? I watched a video on spacesector.com some time ago in regards to Distant Worlds, there where some hints as to a modders/economic expansion. Anyone got any news?

They must be working on something as it appears post game patches have stopped?

Have to agree with this. I dont have the game but everything I have read about X-Rebirth so far has been bad. Everything. Please don't dumb down Distant Worlds.

Awesome! Thanks for the news Erik.

Given how more complicated the game has become since it's orginal I doubt we have much to worry about with Distant Worlds.

Each expension has added it's own little bits to make the game more complex and more interesting, in paritcular Shadows with the pirates being factionlised and made 50 times more deadly and irritating. Shakturi added a whole new story line and threat to your empire and Legends added a whole new ship class, the Carrier, making fleet compisition completely different and needed to be more well thought out by the player, on top of these features improved AI throughout the 3 expansions have certainly made the game the best game I've ever played.

I'm not sure X-rebirth could make a comeback; like it was when X3 was released.
Due to core structure of game are totally over-simplified and badly built. Rumor with some evidence in shader sourcefile code were found that originally x-rebirth were made for console but failed to do so ,then repackaged and stamped out as pc game,Hence all the fps and bugs issue from release build. I'm sure X-series are pretty dead. Lot of old x-veteran still hope that modder could save the day.

Back to Distant worlds, I'm still hoping for more expansion though. Game keeps getting better and better.

Peace

For anyone who hasn't followed X3: Rebirth: It's buggier than the communications of a "person of interest" to the NSA... well, anyone for that matter...

You mean this one? the Xbox360 references are in the notepad window. Never been so grateful for a delayed delivery of components, they wont turn up till next week so my rig build was put on hold, good job as I put the purchase on hold as well, I expected a few bumps but this has major potholes and what looks like more than a few dead ends, makes the X3 launch look tame in comparison, at least with X3 you could see the rough diamond and went with it, Rebirth not so much, I do hope they fix it as I have waited years for this.

My bad. "X Rebirth", not "X3:Rebirth" as I incorrectly identified it. Thanks for the subtle correction, Darkspire.

I did not even notice your mistake, if anything it is you good sir that has corrected me, for it is indeed X Rebirth not Rebirth.

The older X's were released buggy, had dull gameplay with poor stories and laughable animations so that is not new.The series needed a vast change and I will pick it up after some large patching as I think it's better than the haters suggests from watching some lets play.

On DW news one might as well forget until about a week from before release.Matrix hold on to secrets tighter than lockheed martin.

By older you mean X3, XBTF, XT and X2 were fine (except when they nerfed the TP class in X2), X games are never about the plots or main campaigns, although the actual background story is very good, they were there for the folks who needed there hands held, console gamers, folks with no imagination and the publishers, they were and are about the sandbox, nothing else, the open ended gameplay and atmosphere has never been matched, if you wanted a plot you would go play wing commander or privateer.
Have to agree on the animations though, first time I saw the dude walking in X2 I thought I was watching a CGI Thunderbirds

Well, partially yes you're right.X-series always release a big mess at release date. but the complexity of core gameplay has to be there. Fine-tuning like Patching and modding won't be able to fix something like, for example, missing dynamic economic system.

X3 had its issue upon release date, but the complexity is 'there'and that's why it could get polished. Unlike X-rebirth.

I'm not sure Egosoft would be willing to change or redesign broken and tedious feature like ship interior. Only time would tell. But i really hope they do survive from this,

they looked at mass effect and went "YES MORE OF THAT" and that's how we got x rebirth

im sad to say tho that for as many hundreds of hours as i played the x3 trilogy, i dont think they were good games either, so i im not suprised at the state of rebirth

That is more than a little unfair on Mass Effect. Next to Distant Worlds it's the game I play the most, and whatever you may think of the ending, it's clearly in a completely different class of quality to X Rebirth.

Well let's hope that means a big and bold Distant Worlds 2. And if it is expansion, I really hope forum feedback has been considered i.e. improve AI, Private Economy rather than making the game more complex. I don't want it simplified either as the complexity balance is good.

X Ribirth might have been attempting to be a Mass Effect clone. If that's the case, it failed so miserably that its hard to tell, almost as badly as it appears to have failed as an X game. What is it with Devs nowadays, with the exception of a few fringe games like Distant Worlds, they all seem to be churning out utter crap and derivative crap at that!

I'm just gonna say if DW Universe has preview videos where Erik plays with a 360 controller and announces station interiors and more accessibility, I'm walking. But RotS was an excellent game and every expansion after that was even better, so I'm pretty confident that this will be no different.

Now I think that's a bit unfair, even if they did have a video of Erik playing with a 360 Controller and announcing Station Interiors and more accessibility I would still give it a fair shake.

But then again I've long sought a Grand Strategy game who's entire "Interface" is designed to look like a person looking out over a Throne Room/Oval Office sort of situation and communicating with Ministers to set policy and looking at a big ole' wall Map to move armies. It would help make you feel more like an actual Emperor rather than an Omnipresent Force (EUIV) or an all seeing AI Supercomputer (Distant Worlds).

Not that either of those feelings really detracts from gameplay but it's still something I want.

Yeah. I can't remember ever buying so few games in a calendar year ... or being so routinely amused reading about all the crappy ones. Luckily I can see a future filled with Galactic Civilisations 3, Star Citizen, Mass Effect 4 and hopefully Distant Worlds 2. With luck, I won't need anything else. In the meantime I keep going back to old titles.

The trouble is that the big AAA game companies are pushing quantity over quality. Remember back in the day when the graphics were horrid but the game lasted a long time and you could play it over and over and over?

Shogun Total War has that kind of interface for its strategy map.

And the X series, but looked what happene, when they went the whole hog and made it so you had to go and meet with "ministers"? It is very unpopular.

It's not a matter of quantity over quality as marketing over quality. Because marketing works. And quality is subjective.

Yes that's one good sign. There are so many promising looking space games lurking on the horizon at the moment that I'm hoping at least one or two of them will *have* to be good, just through law of averages.

After the X - Afterbirth disaster, I'm seriously thinking of trying out Eve Online in my search for a space trading / empire building game that isn't brain-dead. Has anyone had a good experience with Eve?

Eve is a very good MMO. I played it with friends from work (our own corp/guild). But Eve has some issues that keep turning me away. First if you are in a corp or larger faction, it seems you are at war very often. This tends to detract from the game for me as I would rather harvest, build, sell, etc. If you are at war it is easy to be blockaded on your starport or risk destruction.

It can be very time consuming to get yourself established and getting good equipment. The economy (like most MMOs) is out of whack. You need many credits to get things.

But overall I would suggest you give it a go (especially if you use their free trial) to see if you like it. I find the major battle videos on YouTube amazing.

Would it be easier to focus on non-combat stuff if you just avoid joining a corp and operate solo or is that just not practical?

I tried that, but it isn't as much fun. An MMO should be played with people IMHO, not alone. You can do it that way though.
