I notice some people don't want the manuals, and just want the digital download.

When one of you do decide to buy the game, contact me and then set it up to ship the manuals to my friend, who will give you the money via Paypal for shipping. (And his postal address)

You won't need the disk or the serial number because you already have them from the digital download and the email that comes with it. My friend will destroy the disk and the serial number upon receipt. He just wants the manuals.

Does that sound fair? And is that sort of arrangement ok with Matrix, or not? We won't do anything that isn't approved by Matrix. We have the utmost respect for their incredible hard work. I personally bought the disk and the maps on the very first day (we play hotseat on same computer).

If it is ok with Matrix, and there are more people who don't want the manuals, and more people that want only the manuals, maybe they can speak up and we can get an exchange going (but I get first dibs). :)

Forgive me if this idea has already been pitched (especially if pitched and shot down).

I might be able to do so, with two major caveats:
1) I don't know when I will travel back to the US where the books are; and
2) the few times I go back to the US I have lots of things to do and might not have time to ship them.

Please pm me with your e-mail and I'll let you know when/if I'm in a position to do so. In the meantime you should keep looking...

Also, just out of curiousity, your friend obviously doesn't have the game (or he'd have the books as well), so why does he want the books?

Why not either send him yours, or send him the pdfs? Or print out the pdfs.

Sorry, I missed this in your original post, I guess that's why he wants the books.

Because I like my books! I don't want to give them away. And they're very nice books, have you seen them? Not nearly as good as a PDF!

I just saw lots of posts from people who don't want the books, they just want a digital download of the game.

Rather than let those books go to waste, we just thought we could take the books, and the shipping cost, out of your hands. Especially if that's the only thing stopping you from buying the game.

Just an idea.

Hmm. If I understand it correctly, you expect someone to send you the manuals and the DVD. Why the DVD? Ah I see, your friend will of course destroy it right upon receipt and will of course not even bother to look at the serial number for a single second.

Something smells here...

Yes I've seen them. The reason people don't want the books is because they have to pay shipping for something that they get in pdf form anyway.

So, why should someone buy the game, of which the manuals are part of, pay the shipping costs, then give them away?

I'm buying the game soon. I don't want the printed manuals. But since I'm paying for them, I'm not going to give them away.

That's exactly what I plan to do. Someone is sending me the manuals and I will destroy the DVD (burn) along with any other information that could come with it.

Ok maybe I didn't explain that well enough.

The whole idea is that my friend would pay the shipping costs, not you. And you'd arrange for the printed manuals to go to him, not you.

And that's actually the whole point.

Some people don't want the manuals, and don't want the shipping costs, so I'm trying to alleviate that problem for at least one person!

Does that make sense?

That's not very nice!

The DVD comes with the manuals. That's why the DVD.

You should have asked the question and then waited for an answer before passing such harsh judgment. But I am sorry that my idea wasn't clear, and led you into that dark line of thinking. If I thought Matrix was getting ripped off I'd speak up too, and perhaps too quickly as well. Sorry for any embarrassment.

Actually I think that I (and maybe Aurelian) misunderstand your proposal--you are proposing that someone that has NOT YET ORDERED the game and does not want the books send them to your friend? I guess I was being dense and thought that you were asking for someone that had already purchased the game to do so. What you are saying makes much more sense...

Vollmann, why do you insist on both manuals and DVD to be shipped? I know that the DVD is enveloped inside manual volume 1, I know all comes in one shipment.

If you only want the manuals, anybody could ship his manuals to you, it makes no difference whether he/she already ordered the game yet. Anybody who already has the manuals could easily remove his DVD and ship the books - no need to send the DVD plus serial.

And if someone orders the game today and agrees to such a deal, you and this person will have to sort it out yourself without any interference by matrixgames or Plimus anyway. I purchased a lot of games via Plimus, and in no instance I remember them asking where I want to have the pyhsical content shipped to. They always ship to the billing adress. Again, no need to send the DVD plus serial.

Your insistence on having the DVD (which has the serial printed on it) shipped as well, makes your whole proposal suspicious to me.

If you find someone naive enough to give away his serial to a complete stranger, trusting that this person will NOT misuse the serial, you're lucky. Hey, we're talking about a piece of software with a prize tag of about 112 Euros (or USD eqivalent) and taking the risk of screwing the use of it (playing online).

True, you and your friend could very well be the most honest persons living on this whole planet - but who knows? Ask yourself, would you yourself give away your credit card, to , let's say. ME, on the simple promise that I will not look at it and destroy your card as soon as I get it? I very much doubt it.

Well, he wants the DVD too. Why does he want the DVD? And let's say I buy the game today. Plimus is going to ship it to my billing address. Now, if I put down someone else's address to ship it to, said person will get the game free. As the dvd is included with the manuals.

The entire mess is avoided if he just prints out the pdf files.

Not going to spend $100+ dollars on a game only to give it away.

Which is exactly what is being proposed. (Sure, I buy it and use someone else's address to ship it to.)

This friend does *not* need the DVD. Or the serial number.

Print out the pdf files and give him that

Many people want the game but do NOT want to pay the shipping costs for the backup DVD and manuals which are bundled togeather

The suggestion is for these people that have NOT bought the game solely due to the shipping costs of the manuals, to go ahead and buy the game and ship the physical manauls (which of course will include the DVD) to this person (call him A) whose shipping To address will result in a much reduced shuipping cost to the purchaser.

Once this person A gets the DVD and manuals from this NEW purchase, the DVD will be destrioyed and person A will keep the manuals.

This is all there is too it as far as I can see. I am not sure why this is so hard to understand.

Amazing lack of clarity here present :)

If you desire the game, only want the game and do not desire the burden of the shipping, you could always buy the game, less the cost of the shipping which the other party will cover, they get the books sent to them, at the cost of the shipping, not the cost of anything but the shipping though, so someone will be buying the game, but not getting the books, and while yes, they will have paid for the books and will not be getting the books, some have clearly stated they couldn't care less, as the game is worth that much to them.

The person ponying up the cost of the shipping, is getting the books at only the cost of the shipping, which is as you would suspect a very tidy deal, but that is basically the point, the person wanting the game, does not want the burden of the cost of shipping on top of the cost of the game. And let me tell ya, the game didn't cost me 160 until the shipping had been added to the price.

Now as this is a private arrangement, clearly neither Plimus, or Slitherine Group is involved here and the books are shipped WITH the cd already in the books. If you buy the game, and register the serial the serial is spoken for and that is the end of it. Thus the other person yes they have access to the cd, and yes they have access to the serial and no it is of no use in multi player. Thus, the person might just as well slip just the cd into the mail as a private letter and mail it to you for the value of a postage stamp, a small gesture considering they effectively got the books for peanuts. Not really asking a lot of the person when you think of it.

Yeah the person will have had access to the cd and the serial and thus gets an option to install it not entirely legal. But considering how many of us will be in a position to do the same damned thing with any wargaming friends we already have access too. I think it is a non issue to cry over.

So in the end, sure, it's an idea, some of you could effectively get the game, as a digital download, and not suffer the expense of shipping, even though it means you suffer the cost of paying for books you will not be getting which in the end means you have spent a lot of cash for nothing all the same, but that's your business eh. Maybe some of you have elected to resolve that the game is simply only worth 100 bucks and not a penny more.

Either way, the idea will work, provided you find someone that really feels like getting books that likely will be only relevant to a game they can't really use without a usable serial number.

The idea though, that a person being shipped books that are already packed with the cd and the serial is in some fashion asking for something under handed, that is funny. I'd be inclined to reply with, ok enjoy paying for the shipping and don't bother me :)

So, why would I, as Person A, want manuals for a game I don't have? They are of no use to me without the game.

In this instance I think "A" would be a buddy of a person who has the entire game and is playing hot seat with a person having the entire game. When not playing hot seat, "A" wants to read the manuals when at home at his/her convenience.............whole thing sounds reasonable to me as the OP is seeing people wanting the game electronically but not the manuals (shipping costs/Taxes).

IMO the DVD in the books is useless if not being used by the purchaser (please don't hammer me on the this last comment it's just my opinion).

So person A could take his buddy's books home. Or his buddy could print out the pdfs, or put them on a disk.

If Person A really wants to read the rules, then that would suffice.

If not, then he does not need the books.

I'm not going to hammer you, but if the physical disk is useless, then who do people here buy the physical copy and the d/l?

because that is the only way to buy the game...

IMHO vollman's proposal is completely reasonable and could save someone the cost of postage for books they don't want. and at least on this site, if someone told me that they'd destroy the disk upon receipt, I would tend to believe them.

A friend of mine is contemplating a purchase, but is reluctant because of the shipping cost and all. So I told him about the proposal made here, and he immediately came up with the following grim scenario:

What if the person receiving the package told you he destroyed the DVD with the serial printed on it. But instead he sets up a torrent and includes your serial in it. Let say Matrix Games notices and black lists your serial. What are you going to do now? What is your leverage to resolve the situation, should Matrix Games refuse to reimburse you with a new serial.

An official statement would be appreciated.

I think if you want to do something like this you would need a neutral and trusted third party broker taking care of the destruction of said DVD and serial. Or, if Matrix Games would be cooperative on this, they could just remove the DVD from the package in the first place.
