Is the Solent green? Never mind, I'll google it.

Probably this Palmerston chap had a cousin in the brick business.

Sign in today "Zinoih". This is Hopi for "that's some good ****, man" (a reference to the quality of the Peyote buttons)

So here is my grammar question. Consider the following.

quote:

IJA 64th Brigade are handed their asses. Huzzah!

As Lord Admiral SPrior ordered this attack, I tried to use the Engrish use of the plural verb. But the thing is, it's only one brigade so should they get handed only one ass? Sort of a collective ass? Like this:

quote:

IJA 64th Brigade are handed their ass. Huzzah!

This kind of stuff makes my head hurt. Take these Americanisms:

"The Yankees are getting killed"

"New York is getting killed"

It's the same team. Which is right? Or this.

"Fifth Air Force is (are) gearing up for a major effort" Virtually no Americans would use the plural verb conjugation here. It is one air force, after all.

How about this?

"Leeds United are palying well today". It says right in the name they are "United" so are they not really one entity?

I wish someone would 'splain this to me.

oh man - its asses, definitely asses...

Obviously you have a west coast bias... Ever hear of the NY Mess...Errr Mets???

Or this.

"Fifth Air Force is (are) gearing up for a major effort" Virtually no Americans would use the plural verb conjugation here. It is one air force, after all.
If I remember my English writing classes correctly the identifier makes it singular, otherwise it would be the plural "Army Air Forces are gearing up"

How about this?

"Leeds United are palying well today". It says right in the name they are "United" so are they not really one entity?
Confusion reigns - are you saying the town of Leeds is United in thier football team? or is a single player from the team a Leeds United?

I wish someone would 'splain this to me.

My wish is I find myself learning so many things in this AAR, maybe you could consider slowing down the advance, otherwise it will be over way too soon!!!

Alright, here goes...

"The Yankees are getting killed"

Explanation: Good. The Yankees are getting killed, the Yankees is getting killed, the Yankees were getting killed, the Yankees will be getting killed, The Yankees were killed-it's all good. Yankees+losing (getting "killed")=good, no matter how you say it.

"Leeds United are palying well today"

Explanation: Either "Leeds United are playing well today" or "Who the &*%$ cares?" would be acceptable grammatical phrases here. "Palying" isn't much used these days in modern linguistics. 'Tis a pity, modern language and spelling.

Hope this helps, Cap'n.

I should think that with all that light sweet crude that the Allied bullies are spilling into the water (typically aflame from stricken Japanese tankers), that would endanger these noble beasts. Think of the impact on the shark fin soup trade!

I see a Milo-initiated protest starting here. For the right fee, of course.

We are looking at the South China Sea being cut off in the 1st week of June 1943 ..
I am not sure how many more IJN tankers will make the trek to be sunk ...the end is near ...
I suspect In 3 months 4E's will be raining hell on earth on the home islands .. Autovictory

We lost 3 B-24's yesterday over Naha.

B-25G model starting to arrive. Also P-38H and P-40N1.

USN and USMC fighter and SBD squadrons mostly filled out after the last run in with Soryu. About 1/3rd of USMC VMF squadrons now F6F. It's taking forever to build up the harbor facilities at Aparri (now 2.4). An entire infantry division plus support and a regiment of Marines were supposed to embark here for Okinawa. It will take forever because the APA's can't dock. Moving 1st Marine Regt to Batangas in bits and pieces to reform with the other two regiments of 1st Marine Div.

Iba is barely a level 2 port and 2+ divisions are supposed to embark there. It won't work. Might have to move one division somewhere or just leave them embarked for a week while the second division loads.

Massachusetts to bombard Naha tonight. B-24's to fly over Nago.

USS Phoenix and 2 DD's are going to try to reach Miri from Puerto Princesa and attack Jap shipping there.

Not sure about autovictory but it won't take 3 months to hit the home isrands. Horycrappo-jima is buildable to level 7 (at 2.6 now with 4 Air HQ already ashore) and from there the B-24's can reach all of Kyushu and Honshu as far east as Fukuyama.

We are also still 7000 pts behind. At least we reached a "draw".

Pretend I didn't read the manual. What do you need for autovictory.

On Autovictory ....

quote:

17.2.2 AUTOMATIC VICTORY IN 1943
In 1943, if one player has 4 times the VP’s of the other, the game will end.
17.2.2 AUTOMATIC VICTORY IN 1944
In 1944, if one player has 3 times the victory points of the other, the game will end.
17.2.3 AUTOMATIC VICTORY IN 1945 OR LATER
In 1945 or beyond, if one player has 2 times the victory points of the other, the game will end.

....

So I thought you were not as far a long .. but I am thinking the minimum field of 7 although one can fly with a 5 .. not a lot of planes will meet a lot of IJN/IJA fighters

quote:

In order to avoid these penalties, the size of the airbase needs to be equal to:
4 + (Max load of aircraft / 6500), All fractions are rounded down.
Thus, an A-20A requires a minimum size 4 base, a B17-E requires a minimum size 5 base, and
a B29 requires a minimum size 7 base.

So I was calculating about 3 months to get this base to a level 7 ...

But once you do have multiple 4E groups pounding the IJ at night . thousands of points can be accumulated quickly in the numerator
The fall of big point values like Singapore and Manila shift the denominator dramatically

************June 5, 1943(c)***************

Okinawa: I think they were trying to land at Okinoerabushima(east of Okinawa) in order to deny us an easy base. We spotted them and 20 SBD's from Miyako-jima attacked.

The night bombardment of Naha was not all that effective. Light damage from our air raids over Nago. The cruisers will go in tonight at Naha and a light SCTF will try to catch the WJD troopships.

Remember this brilliant plan with 1,276 working parts, participants from 3 Allied nations AND an recon rider from M&M Enterprises?

It didn't work. Well, mostly. There was this. Turns out it was not a tanker.

Sub attack near Cam Ranh Bay at 72,72

Japanese Ships
xAKL Ryoyu Maru #21, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
SC CHa-25
SC CHa-1
xAK Igasa Maru
PB Seikai Maru

Allied Ships
SS Saury

And one raid from the B-25's from Iba. This is one of the best B-25C squadrons we have. They get the first skip-bombing hits of the war.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Cam Ranh Bay at 72,72

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid spotted at 12 NM, estimated altitude 11,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 3 minutes

Allied aircraft
B-25C Mitchell x 7

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
xAK Igasa Maru, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
7 x B-25C Mitchell bombing from 100 feet *
Naval Attack: 1 x 500 lb SAP Bomb

We whiffed on the raid at Miri. Not sure if we turned around or they saw us coming.

Formosa/Horycrappo-jima/Okinawa: Not sure if Takao was headed for Karenko or Miyako-jima but something goes terribly amiss. They did run across a sub. Perhaps they took too long. They hide behind some clouds in the morning...but then.

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Taihoku at 90,62

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 18 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Allied aircraft
F6F-3 Hellcat x 18
SB2C-1C Helldiver x 18
SBD-5 Dauntless x 52

Allied aircraft losses
SB2C-1C Helldiver: 2 damaged
SB2C-1C Helldiver: 1 destroyed by flak
SBD-5 Dauntless: 5 damaged

Japanese Ships
CA Takao, Bomb hits 5, heavy fires
DD Hagikaze, Bomb hits 1, on fire
DD Murasame, Bomb hits 1, on fire
DD Arashio, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
DD Tanikaze, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

90% of the dive bombers at Karenko are organized into one cohesive raid.

The bombardment of Naha is again borderline useful. The WJD transports turn around.

My Dearest SPri;

Hope the weather is splendid in Pompey. How is Sir Dudley?

Regarding Burma there is this. We sent some P40's to Bassein. It is, after all, an American protectorate now. The State Dept. thought they could use it as bargaining chip after that awkward business with His Majesty's Crown Colony of Laoag. Anyway, 172 Wing is (are) flying in from Chittanpongo..or perhaps Chittagonapah..no, Chiggapoontang...oh, Hell, it's that big base in Southern India. Also, some SeaBees were ordered to walk over from Ramree.

As for India, there is something amiss at Calcutta. When our custom-outfitted B-17 with the enamel ash trays touched down there were hundreds of Mohammadans running amok. They were burning Union Jacks and an effigy that was either Queen Victoria or the King in a dress. We decided to push on after we stocking up on snack foods. Moana wasn't really dressed properly for a Mohammadan riot.

That's about it. Don't forget to use your sunscreen in Pompey.

With the warmest of sincerely feigned affection;

Fleet Admiral Mandrake

I did not read the manual but I suspect the red means something bad. Maybe they just ran out of Bully Beef at the PX but I suspect some restive group is making trouble.
