A new naval power rising?
In spanish only.
They also bought a frigate, two patrol boats and a LPD.

Ok, they still need the harriers though...

Link is dead and doesn't look like anybody else is carrying a story on it yet.

It had been active but reading many comments to the article (admittedly using Google translations) indicated that there was no deal as yet and that one seemed unlikely.

I've got a costing module in the back of my mind for command that would allow players to model buying and selling of naval units, logistics etc.. The catch would be differentiating between the different eras. Unfortunately it would probably be years before I could take it up.

Article is about Africa's (Angola) first carrier, if deal will be made.

Solution last minute of the Navy : Angola purchase the ' Prince of Asturias '

The contract includes the sale of four patrol

The aircraft carrier Principe de Asturias ' finally sold the last country that was interested in him. The vessel was to be scrapped , after failing all negotiations with nations asked for him in recent months .

The Digital Confidential has learned that the R-11 aircraft , baptized 25 years as ' Prince of Asturias ' ago, will be transferred to Angola.

The African country is also committed to be Ferrol shipyard Navantia for the Spanish company who undertake the work of renovation and adaptation of vessel required to be operational again .

Moreover, in the same contract agreed between Defence and Angola, it is contemplated that the African country complementarily receive four patrol Navy that had been removed : the P-27 Ízaro ( class of Anaga , launched in 1980), the P -61 Chilreu ( Chilreu of class, launched in 1988), the F-32 Diana ( of the Discovery class, launched in 1976) and the L -42 Pizarro

The ship was put up for sale by Defence in May 2012
( launched in 1970 by the U.S. Navy and acquired by Spain in 1995).

First contacts in summer

The sale has been finalized after two admirals of the Angolan armed would visit Spain in summer for the status of ' Prince of Asturias ' first hand.

Navantia also hosted the African delegation at the shipyard in Ferrol, in order to show them how and where they might be carried out to update and adapt the aircraft carrier , as will eventually happen .

ECD has been in contact with the Navy. A spokesman confirms contacts with several countries, including Angola, but does not provide more information.

Angola save the ' Prince of Asturias ' dismantling

The ship was put up for sale by Defence in May 2012 , as reported ECD then. The idea was to market before it was too late , but it was understood it would be difficult to find a buyer for his state, which required an expensive repair .

After a year and a half of negotiations , in which the country showed more interest was the Philippines , Defense finally decided last October that the aircraft was scrapped and auctioned very low in the month of December.

Now that is a little more credible. They do seem to have a lot of off shore oil and gas fields but nobody in the region seems equipped in a way that would require a cv.

Wondering if this is being leaked to push others into bidding on the thing.

You would think that carrier would be better used by one of the navies in the far east. (Philippines, or even Japan...do what the Chinese did and say theyre gonna make a casino out of it)

They have 2 Hyuga Class "DDHs" which are larger and more capable- not to mention allowed under their constitution.

Nice to see where my government overseas aid is going to in Africa, they are obviously not interested in infrastructure for water and better roads.

Well, they only have a machete on their flag. So it could be ambiguous, at least with Mozambique they let it all hang out with an AK-47 and you know what you're getting. [/slight sarcasm]

I could not help wondering about the "two Angolan admirals" and how their navy could find enough things for both to do.
