A friend is installing SPWAW (which I mailed him on a burned CD) and ran into an 'abatis' during the 4.0 installation ; to wit., 1) He installed ver. 2.1 successfully to the default directory. 2) Upon upgrading to ver. 4.0 and during the install/overwrite of 2.1, he received a "insert Disk #2" prompt. What does this mean - I seem to remember myself running into this once, but I have confirmed that all versions at my end install without a hitch. Any ideas?
Upon further review of the install instructions on our patches: It doesn't seem clear to me and possibly others new to installing SPWAW for the first time, just exactly which SPWAW upgrade files you need and which ones you can ignore. I would humbly request that version 5.0 clarify this and remove any conceivable ambiguity. ;-) By example, something like a complete 'itemized' set of install instructions might be appreciated by new SPWAW playes; to wit., To Install SPWAW version 5.0, you must install the previous versions below in order and as follows: 1) Install ver. 2.1 2) Install ver 4.0 (no need to have ver 2.2 or 2.3 installed, yes?) 3) Install ver 4.1 4) Install ver 4.2 5) Install ver 4.5 (no need to install 4.3 or 4.4, yes?) 6) Install ver 5.0 Question: I assume we can install all the patches first before "rebooting" the computer in order to complete the install instructions, yes? I humbly apologize if this appears rather dense at my end. But my friends apparently aren't any better and so we could all use a little helpful / timely clarification so we can get playing. Thanks! Below is a site with the sequence of upgrades required as posted by a fellow gamers own site: http://www.fprado.com/armorsite/spwaw_downloads.htm If at any time during the installation of any upgrade it asks for disk #2, that download is incomplete or corrupted and needs to be redownloaded. It is not absolutly necessary to restart the computer after each upgrade but recommended because this process removes temporary files created during the installation process. I hope this helps. Welcome to the best wargame around with the best support board you will ever find. P.S. ver 5 is due to be released any day now.

Thanks gmen (I guess the fact his ver. of 4.0 asks for disk two means that it was somehow corrupted during the CD copy routine . . . what a sorry waste of 134 MB's of otherwise promising space ) But I also hope the Matrix boys might think to add precise install instructions in their upgrad 'readme' file or better yet on the actual install routine of a new patch . . . because The Armor Site isn't completely clear on the 2.1, 2.2, or 2.3 and neither is the Matrix install instructions for 4.0 clear on what previous files are needed. (again, apologies to Matrix if I appear dense but I know I am speaking for at least two others ) Albert [This message has been edited by Graf Speer (edited March 05, 2001).]

You can upgrade from any ver of 2.x to 4.1 from the site listed, if you do so you won't need the 4.0 to 4.1 patch. I don't know of any intermediate patches left from 2.x to 3.x or to 4.0. I've got some old upgrades from 2.1 to 2.2 and to 2.3 on an old CD that I made a while back. It's probably just as easy to go from 2.x to 4.1 or if you've got the time a complete download of 4.5 or better yet ver 5 when when it's available on the Mega Campaign CD or a free download from Matrix.

Graf...for what it's worth, when I upgraded from 4.0 to 4.5 all updates went in fine till I got to 4.5 and it asked the dirty question...Wheres the second disk?...I quit at this point and was preparing to reload again when I found that the mod was installed correctly...I will not speculate as to how our why but it worked for me and the game works perfectly. Oh yeah I shut the game off when I got the message, then when I turned it back on I saw the updated (opening screen) and verified the changes from Tankheads site. I hope it works for you also.... ------------------ Sm:):)th Sailing...chief

Howdy Just that it wouldn't be so easy, I downloaded that 4.1 (300?megs) and patched it and burned a cd and enjoyd. Don't know why you are talking about 2.? 3.? versions, it should be easier than that. After you have finished, delete steel.prf in case it has been corrupted during updates and start the game. hope this helps more than takes time to read. mosh

Yes, thanks Chief, I will suggest that tonight when we try to install it at his end (i.e., try to ignore the "second disk" request). Thanks, Skukko for the reminder about deleting that darn steel.prf file. Will do. Thank you all for the timely assistance. Albert
