Which is better? Putting contruction ships on auto and have them build mining stations and the like by them self's, or doing it yourself?

I control them all early for building a resource network and research stations.Mid game onwards most are on auto.

I have most on auto but at the start keep one or two back for pet building projects that I queue up for them, once they are finished I set them to auto again and call them later if needed.

I keep them on manual.

Making sure I have plenty of fuel and strategic resources is usually first priority.

Ship and station repairs, resorts and research bonus station builds, and special strategic and luxuries mining are all second.

I don't trust the AI to follow that.

Early game i will manually control them, then eventually automate them. When automated, i will routinely check the resources, and queue up any facilities i think are needed.

I generally just reserve one of them (usually the one at the top of the list) for my special projects, and leave the rest auto.

Ditto. I figure they know the need better than I. But I do keep a couple around to repair ships found, to build stations like monitor stations, and so on.
