Despite the presence of the Italian fleet, the Americans capture Taranto with few losses. A paradrop is of great help here.

The two naval units in Taranto, old cruisers, are destroyed by the American fleet.

The British continue their advance and now a unit enters Germany.
It ocupies one of the city in the Ruhr and captures an oil reserve.
This will be sorely missing for Germany!

Worse, it now seems more and more problematic to control this small expeditionary corps, which destroys the units sent to stop it peacemeal. If the turn doesn't end up soon, the Ruhr could be in shatters in a few impulses!

In France,a joint attack by the British and Americans works well enough.
Germans are forced to retreat behind the Seine.

Two weak garrison units, which had been disorganized on the first impulse, are now destroyed by the irresistible advance of the British mechanized army.

It must be noted that most British units are still fully operational at this stage. Little remains to check them should the turn continue much longer.

The logical next target could well be Paris, first because this is a good opportunity with now four hexes out of six surrounded, second because it would be a great success to be able to restore France before the end of the turn, third because, as noted, the British army is in quite good shape for the job. However, Paris is difficult to capture, with a large penalty to the attacker.

Bulgaria could not face the Russian south army group, which eats it up alive.
Italians units present there don't seem up to the task.

In addition, there was another combat in the North Carpathians, which I failed to capture, which was a success to the Russians. This means that the Hungarian plains are within reach, provided the slow army crosses the mountains.

The destroyed pool is now impressive.

Americans begin to suffer. The losses are now at up to their production, if one counts that they produce two offensives per turn. The Russians have lost more than half their production.

And, as the next picture will show, Germany has lost more than twice its production while Italy has lost somewhat more than its production (there are damaged ships not showing.)

Also note that the axis air forces have extremely suffered. They should be absent from the skies in the next turn.

The turn is not yet finished...

But the promising offensive in the North has been stoped by a miscalculated attack.

Possibly, the Germans may even reply, close the gap and destroy two planes and a brand new armored unit.

As expected, the Germans counter-attack. After all, the potential loss of 2 planes and an armored can hardly be ignored.

The irony is that, while filling up their objective, the german suffered themselves a Pyrrhic victory. Their own losses are too large, and the attack dezorganizes a lot of units.

This places the German army in the awkward situation of having reestablished a siatifying front line in the North, but at the cost of now being extremely fragile. It seems that this attack, which on paper was so easy, may be costly in the near future!

Of course, Germany is now paying its air weakness ; only the Russians had the means to fly any plane there.

Italy at the start of the 4thn allied impulse in May 44.

Note that by now, the count down to Italian surrender is on.
Either the allies capture Rome, or they just bring enough troops to sit down in Italy.

Either way, Italy is going to be toast quite soon, but possibly not this turn.

The British launch a well prepared offensnve on Paris, but despite all preparations (offensive, engineers), it fails! That put a grind to the Commonwealth war machine this turn.

Once more, I will forget the screenshot for the attack in the Netherlands: but there, German units continue to get destroyed peacemeal.

In the east, the Russian army indeed breaks the fragile German front and a new breakthrough is done. This one will be more difficult to stop: There are no significant air unit able to strike it, and land forces are now exceedingly tired. There are still numerous Russian forces that could infiltrate through this hole should the turn go on.

But an attack in the south fails.
That will likely put an end to all attacks in southern Poland for the rest of the turn.
Still, a Ju was destroyed on the ground by the advancing forces.

In the ceneter of France, the USA seem to waken up and destroy a lone Italian HQ that had been staying there for some time. Italy never found the right time to move it out of harms way, if only because the only reasonable way out is blocked by an uncoperating Vichy unit.

This clears the Massif Central, and frees many US units, most of which are still fresh and ready to attack.

All allied powers have again chosen land moves.

The USA have used a chit to turn up all HQ, despite the fact that there is a high risk that the turn could terminate. The USA can afford it, and with luck, an offensive could be lauched the next impulse to break the lock around Lyon.

The British will renounce their assault on Paris: not enough strength available, especially after a failed carpet bombing on Paris. Instaed, they will focus on Rouen to try and get the road on the coastline opened.

The Russians will not attack seriously this turn: they will used the fact that the German army is almost immobilized now to push their advantage by getting more troops through the hole.

This is France and Netherlands at the start of the 5th allied impulse in May 44.

The balkan and southern Italy at the start of the 5th allied impulse in May 44.

Note that Italy has vacated Greece: troops are badly in need in more important areas.

The Americans hoped to launch an assault on Rome. For that purpose they made a carpet bombing (at 17 factor) that failed. It was followed by a ground strike (at 5 factors), that also failed against all three units. The attack was postponed...

China at the start of the 5th allied impulse in may 44.

Chinese have lured the Japanese into a false sense of security since the start of the turn. Moving little, titghly pocketing the Ex-Yamashita army corps. Thing will change with brutality.

The Chinese suddenly turn north and anihilate Umezu.
Anyway, there was little hope for this army now: no reinforcement will be forthcoming, and evacuation will not be possible, if at all, for most units.

The Americans clear up the trailing German units in the Rhone Valley.
These units have been slowly moving to the north, to strengthen the wavering front.
Most have escaped.

Note that there was a combat two hexes north. It ended up with the retreat of the german forces, but there were no losses on either side.

In Rouen, the British hopes shatter. This is another of these attacks that breaks the chance of any more progress there for the turn. The losses are heavy, and will likely be felt in the next turn.

Germany is at least now ensured that this part of the front is secure.

A costly victory for Russia in the Balkans.
But there is no doubt that the presure must be kept high.
This front is weak and can be broken.

France at the start of the 5th axis impulse in May 44.

The axis powers have a choice to all pass. This may be tempting, for a 60% chance of end of turn. But if it fails, this means giving the allied a free impulse, that is sure to be extremenly devastating on the east front : it is necessary to prevent the Russians to penetrate the prepared fortification line behind the Vistula.

Elsewhere, passing would be a good option: there is no specific move to do now in France, where the defense lines stand well and no ajustments are necessary. The same applies in the Balkans, and the Japanese know that anyway, most of their troops in China are doomed ; furtermore, they now serve no purpose, most resources being now under Chinese control.

In Italy, there is no obvious move that requires being done.

So the axis chooses 2 pass actions and a land action (Germany.)
