It would be nice if the AI would not punch little salients in my lines, then advance to the next hex, allowing their advancing force to be completely cut off and destroyed (usually with no effort).

The French do this all the time in Alsace-Lorraine and Luxembourg (abandoning Verdun in the process).  In my latest game, 6 "A" French corps were easily destroyed when 3 of them took a hex in Alsace and then advanced the whole force, minus a CAV, one hex further, only to be completely cut off.  Almost immediately after this, three more attacked Luxembourg and then advanced a hex, leaving Verdun completely undefended.  Of course, I took Paris fairly easily at the end of 1915.  There essentially wasn't a French army left.

And the Russian blob, as annoying and silly as it is, does this same thing in Silesia and Posen.  I don't have an exact count, but 17 Russian units were cut off west of Warsaw by a very easy offensive.  The blobbification strategy that the AI loves makes the eastern front ridiculous.

That's why people give up playing the AI in most games - it's never as good as another player!

I would love to see an up-date.

I always thought it odd that England started out with the allies in 1914. If the CP stayed out of Belgium and didn't engaged the French fleet, or conduct unrestricted submarine warfare, then they should be able to go without England in the war for the first year or so. No?

There was a lot of debate about this earlier on the forum - if you search you may find it.

If the CP doesn't invade Belgium then the UK is effectively out of the war in Europe until 1915 - it cannot Amphib on T1, which means it cannot get to Europe until T2, so cannot possibly strat move to the front before T3.

IIRC the consensus way back when was that the UK would not stand aside & let either France or Russia get steamrollered - it would find an excuse to join in somewhere somehow.

Interesting, thanks for the reply. I just thought it might be fun, and historic, to give the CP the option of playing in such a way as to delay England's entry into the war, but that might give the CP too much of an advantage?

I'd like to see the ability to increase the number of corps of a nation added to the editor.

I agree with Kirk23, I would like to see an improved editor as well. Maybe with the player able to create divisions and brigades....

Yes you can attack enemy hexes with your Calvary even if they do not have Infantry stacked with them,as ;as long as the enemy hex only has Calvary in it. Even with FOW the game will let you attack the hex, hence if you can attack an unknown force in an enemy hex with just your Calvary you know that the force there consists of Calvary units only.

I'm guessing an update isn't going to happen, but it should.  Despite its warts, this is by far the best of the few WWI games that came out all together.

Hi all, as its now been 4 years since this title was released and almost 2 years since I've done anything on it, I was wondering if there is any interest in me doing an update?

I know there's a few minor bugs that I could take a stab at. And I could set it up to take advantage of Slitherine's PBEM system. Other than those I couldn't think of anything else.

If anyone has any suggestions or bugs or stuff like that, I'd like to hear them.

Thank you!

Frank, you know I want any update you can develop. I'm doing a survey of WW I games.

Man, we go back awhile. I remember your first ACW game.

Frank, I've played this game for years and am a big fan.  If you're still planning on an update, here are my suggestions:

- Agree that the UK AI does not do a good job of pulling its weight on the western front.  Also, perhaps more noticeable is when the US enters the war, I never see any US units show up save their artillery - I think the AI has them all sitting back in North America.
- The TE AI in Egypt/Mesopotamia/Greece is extremely passive.  Would encourage them pushing the Turks/Bulgars much harder.
- Encourage the idea of a new 1918 scenario, perhaps starting the date of Operation Michael; would like to game a battered Germany making one last play for victory in the West before it's too late.  In Jan 1917, their position can still be easily salvaged.

Yes, please.

I bought GoA several years ago, 2008 I guess. Could never get myself into it. In my recently awakened WW1 interest I have bought a number of games around the Great War, Ageod and Battlefront titles, TOAW III scenarious and a number of boardgames. Came to think of GoA and installed it. Many hours now and it is a really good experiance.

So, a little modernising and would make an escellent game even better.

I notice with the latest patches that the british ai has problems to move his troops to the front. The ai send a few corps to France but then they are not moved out of french ports to the frontline. In the unpatched version this doesn´t happen. So if you can change this this would be nice.

Btw: How is the current status of your other projects Frank?

Any news about the update?
Status? When? How?...

Frank has promised a Napoleonic game on the Danube forum...I think somewhere a civil war game and now mentions this and again vanishes.

Any update should include scrolling with the mouse and a way to get to the report screen in hi-res.

Edit. I figured out a hi-res work-around. My native res makes font too small on everything else so I had it set lower. Reverting to native worked with the higher GOA res.

Yes, hexes with both sides in it are part of the design, they're "contested hexes" and both sides can reinforce them without using an activation. A good use for the seldom-used "withdraw" order. The idea was to allow you to cycle out depleted units and in with fresh ones.

The interface will probably have to be changed as I no longer have that button/panel package. Well, I still have the old one but I haven't updated it since so it will no longer compile. But I'll figure out what to do about that.

Ralph, players can reload PBEM turns but they don't gain from it as they don't see the resolution until they get the files back. Am I misunderstanding?

Has anyone had any compatibilty problems with Vista or Windows 7?

I will put together a long list of all the outstanding issues that have popped up over the last two years and then get to work on it.

Hey Frank,

Well, that was that I suppose.

But, this is THE BEST choice for WWI, IMHO. I just got it out again and playing as CP for extra challenge.

To be honest, if someone would just cleanup the UI forms a bit (so it doesn't look so rough), me thinks it might sell a few more copies.

Maybe someone here at Matrix could volunteer, and you wouldn't have to do anything.

Things to consider.

It is kinda pointless having alternate maps if there isn't a matching overview and overall map.
It is kinda pointless having alternate counters when the original counters display on the overview map.
Reorganize the space waster forms so they are smaller. The Build Forces and Naval Orders form comes to mind.
Trim the edges of the form background art, to elimiate the 3d effect. For some reason that I can't explain, 3d background art doesn't seem right for a window?

Repectfully,

Stwa

I would love to see an update. Adding PBEM integration with the Slitherine server would be awesome, as would adding multi-multi-player support...(i.e, up to 4 players)

I have just come back to the game after a few years absence.
My opponent and I are still very impressed by it.
If I may say I think Matrix and Frank are missing a trick not having a revamp in this anniversary year.
