I was interested to know if anybody has had success escorting a task force by assigning a task force to "follow"? The reason I ask is I am trying to be mindful of port size restrictions. As far as I understand (I have been quite wrong sometimes, ask my ex) if you have a task force with three cargo and three escorts, all six ships count for tonnage docked. I would love to know I am wrong on this but deeply suspect I am correct.

So, if I send my three ship task force and assign a second task force to follow could I expect any protection from the second task force? If I can, what mission should be assigned to the second task force? Surface, ASW, Escort?

Thanks for any feedback you might share...

I've had success with task forces following in an ASW role, but usually with other escorts embedded within the TF as well.

If you're worried about port space just disattach the escorts in port, then reattach them as the TF is ready to sail again. If for some reason you have to use escorts outside the transport TF then it might be better to have the merchant follow the escorts, but still there are no guarantees everything will always be exactly together, and your settings also might depend on what type of threats exist in the area. If it's just subs you'll likely be fine with an ASW TF leading a transport TF. Still, better to embed them to know they'll be together every day.

What sort of threat? Enemy surface force, then you want your TF following your surface force TF. Enemy subs then you want escorts embedded with your TF for protection. If you can spare it then have a dedicated ASW TF patroling ahead of the TF with a react set to 3 or so.

hi Jim Stevens,

you're right to think that your 6-ship TF docks as a unit - if its total tonnage is greater than the port's capacity, it can't dock.

this reqs a bit of micromanagement, to examine your convoys as they approach or reach the unload-port, to re-size them appropriately. one thing i remember is that a convoy w/ only 1 ASW-escort is still far superior to a convoy w/o any escort. & its always a good idea to size your convoys to the destination port's capacity, when you create them.

what threat do you face - air, surface or sub? can the destination port contribute anything? a supplied AG or AD disbanded in the destination port can reload your escorts' ASW ammo, or support a local ASW TF on patrol. A supplied AVD or AVG can support an amphibian air-group, tasked to ASW - it'll reduce the enemy sub effectiveness, just by detecting them.

The goal was to get TF's docked and protect en route without having to micromanage the TF's. I guess that's the only way to optimize without wasting dock space. Thanks all for your comments...
