I was goofing around with the Downfall scenario, and I noticed that the fighter squadrons assigned to US CV's are being resized twice according to the Ops Report. The first resize increases the squadron sizes to 36, and the second decreases the squadron sizes to 18. Any idea why this is happening? The USN will be sailing into areas where its ships will likely come under Kamikaze attacks. Wouldn't maximum fighters for fleet defense be desirable?

In late war the large VF squadrons were proven to be too ponderous in size for one officer to command, so the VF squadrons were split into VF and VFB squadrons. In practice the two did the same roles and often flew the same planes (though some flew Corsairs as VMFB squadrons). The resizing to 18 should correspond with the arrival of the VFB squadrons.

That would make sense except for the fact that the total aircraft assigned to each CV following the resizes would be VF squadron 18, VBF squadron 18, VB squadron 15 and VT squadron 15. That is 68 aircraft when capacity is 90. There is room for another squadron. And there are not spare squadrons floating around to station on the CV's. And if the squadrons on the CV's were being reduced in size due to command difficulties, then why were the squadrons assigned to the CVL's and CVE's not reduced?

The size of VF squadrons on the CVs got too big to be managed. There was no reason to downsize the squadrons on the CVEs or CVLs because they were size limited by the size of the ship.

Look for VFB squadrons. They should show up about the same time the VF squadrons downsize. Did the VS squadrons disband back in early 43? The VS squadrons return as VFB squadrons with fighters.

Can't say if it's something on the Downfall scenario or not (is that a stock or a mod scen???) but IIRC at game start in 41 it's 27/18/18/12 or 15 for most except Wasp then early 43 when the VS squadrons go it's 36/36/15 then when the vbf's come back it was 36+/18/18/12. A/c capacity didn't really play into the sizings in the game code as far as getting to max a/c capacity. You can & I do quite frequently especially w/ the Brit units, resize then to fit a/c capacity of cv.

Maybe someone made a mistake in the resize data in the scenario files????

In the GC the squadrons are resized to two 36 plane squadrons. So the loadout would be 2x36 fighters, 15 DBs and 15 TBs for a total of 102 planes. After that no more resizes are scheduled. So it does sound like something is wrong in the Downfall scenario.

All above just happened in my GCG. If operating over 110% (99) capacity bad things happen. I am not sure I want the extra sqns on board. For operations the CV could send a complete Sqn on escort and keep the other Ftr Sqn on cap. Wonder what the effect will be. Might help strike coordination.
