I do not agree with championzhao, but admittedly he has killed over 30 (probably innocent) people during his private guerilla career post war.

He apparently killed 30 people during his time in the jungle. The details in the article are a bit sketchy but it sounds probable that some of his actions were "offensive military operations" rather than purely self defense. Without the legal sanction of a state of war existing between Japan and the Philippines/USA such actions would be considered murder or larceny etc.

Formal war does not make everything legal but it does make some actions which would ordinarily be considered a crime into legal activities for which the individual soldier is not legally responsible.

According to the article, he surrendered to the Philippine President and was granted a pardon by the Philippine Government. Doesn't that put things to rest?

Given the fact that championzhao is Chinese, I can understand his point of view. This is certainly an area where reasonable people can see things differently.

This could turn nasty so I won't write what I was just tempted to write. Your last sentence is the relevant however, reasonable people.

I wonder if he will be buried at the Yasukuni (sp) shrine.

That story would usually make me smile but 30 dead people prevent that.

There was a lot of footage of him last on Japanese TV. He did spend lots of later years involved with
trying to educate younger children by many school visits (much of it was on environmental commentary).
His killing of civilians was not mentioned.
