I am still in awe of what just happened. A three hex strike with no counter-strike from the Allies!!!

As shown below, it is not without a price. The KB air wing is shot. It'll take a week or more to refill the groups. Almost all of the LBA DB/TB groups were decimated, and they contributed little. Over 1600 planes lost!!! Over 800 pilots KIA and 500 MIA.

Still, the KB will most likely live to fight again! Whatever the Allies are planning, it may still go ahead, so we must be ready for tomorrow with everything that can fly or float.

What course will he Allies take tomorrow? Will they land at Saisho To, or Moppo, or somewhere else?

Will the retreat to lick wounds?

Will they come right in after us?

Nice going! Judging strictly by the Allied ground losses, I'm guessing 5 or 6 CV at least. Maybe more.

And it continues for a day two ... the decisive battle of the middle of May!

Day two has some surprises, and this time it's only LBA from the Japanese side, but more carnage for both parties ...

For these wild days I think the images tell the story best. The night began with naval engagements in the hex where the previous day's air battles occurred. The fast Kongo class shot through the Tsushima straits and was met by Allied CLs. The BBs got the worst of it in low moonlight, but then found the Bunker Hill and escorts ...

... the BBs didn't do much but every battle led to the loss of more ops points and ammo ...

... Kashi and an AMC then got in there and did some real damage, although the two slower ships also took some hits ...

... our DDs find the Allied cruisers burning heavily after their encounter with the Kongos, and they fight them about evenly at close range. Most battles are under 8k yards due to the low moonlight conditions ...

... a fast IJN CL TF hits the Bunker Hill next and gets to many of its escorts without taking a serous hit. Then the MTBs get in for the Coup de Grace ...

When the airstrikes began the number of escorts looked promising ... until I realized less than 20 strike planes were with each of the first few packages that had plenty of firepower to break through. This kind of difficulty in coordinating from 3-5 hexes out with something like 8 air HQs in range and the escorts fully coordinated makes no sense. Having go the better of the two days I can't complain, but it's silly to have several hundred fighters leading 15 DB while later strikes all come in solo, even though they originated in the same base.

Conventional wisdom about coordination just doesn't work in the beta, especially in massive battles like this late in game. Keep your KB around! Here are some shots ...

... in this image for instance all kinds of fighters coordinate, but the 400 2E bombers in the same base do not ... ?

... again, there are 300-400 DB/TB/2E in Nagasaki and none but these few Judys head out with the main body of escorts ...

... still, I can't really complain, as Allied CAP is spread all over the place and we hit probably the most diverse and wide-ranging set of ships that have been damaged thus far in one battle. A little bit of everything. This makes it difficult to stop anything, but could lead to some dividends later when many of these ships can't support the newly established landing. We'll see ...

No CAP over these CVEs all day??

Yes!! Strangely enough, a lot of the bravest, traveling without escort and hitting the fleets at Moppo, actually come back alive! (While those traveling with 300 escorts universally did not!)

... after most of the 200k troops the Allies brought to Moppo unloaded the IJN flyboys got a few good shots in sinking a good number of APA/AKA. Some Sonia and Ann kamis from Fusan actually made it through as well but couldn't get a hit.

... a few wayward strikes went for the old BBs and got a number of torpedo hits on them, likely getting a couple of them out of the war for good, if not sunk. Remaining subs will sprint to follow tomorrow ...

... I love hitting the US CLs, as these will be the deciding factor in so many upcoming surface battles if indeed the Allies get a foothold and need to keep up constant support at Moppo. The IJN begins to suffer later in the day though, as the Allied CVs get into the act ...

... the Kongos and a few of the CLs are lost, and one strike gives me the willies, going for the two KB TFs that accidentally end up at Nagasaki!!! I sent them all to Maizuru but in my excited and wrecked state after watching yesterday's replay I didn't change their home base and they came back right into the battle! Tomorrow they will sprint East and I hope they make it! I'd like to keep this at least a marginal tactical victory even if the strategic situation might still favor the Allies and all of their stuff now sitting in Korea.

This strike was completely wiped out though, and hit nothing at Nagasaki.

I'll go through the CR and post soon ...

Part of the coordination issue might be the cruise speeds ... Nettie cruise is really slow

Don't try and land near the HI without bombing the crap out of all airfields in range first.

Good stuff BTW

... until I realized less than 20 strike planes were with each of the first few packages that had plenty of firepower to break through.

This is a very common error on the forums. The replays are always interpreted as different missions separated by time and space, as well as any influence of CAP position and numbers is dismissed as unimportant. Failure to arrive in a big block is always a coordination error no matter what.

The different replays do
- not neccessarily reflect separate missions
- not neccessarily reflect separate formations
- are influenced by number of planes total
- are influenced by number of CAP and detection of individual strike elements
- in addition is often influenced by fatigue and morale values (which already might vary radically depending on the squadrons involved the previous turn)

In your specific case the replay most probably shows the majority of escorts moving in first and mixing up with CAP, with many of the CAP fighters not even in visual range of the bombers, and some other elements of your bomber formations getting through untouched and unseen, or engaged without protection as the fighters were already commited to battle.

Actually it is a very plausable replay (which must have been FUN to watch...)

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

KOREA IS INVADED!!

SUBS: Another sub gets in the action and puts two TT into a CVE. A few more are sunk for each side.

STRAT BOMBING: The Allies go for LI at Swatow.

CHINA: This theatre takes a backseat for the moment.

HOME ISLANDS: Day two brings a lot more LBA air losses, but some more sunk ships as well. I just can't grasp why coordination is so poor when escorts themselves coordinate extremely well. All planes are set from each individual base at the same altitude. All HQ and group leaders have been checked. Everything is flying from level 9 bases with lots of support.

In spite of all of that, a good number of Allied ships are hit, and we should come out ahead for the second day in a row. Each side loses a bunch of DDs, some CLs, and has capital ships hit. The IJN loses three Kongos, and the Allies have a few old BBs roughed up enough to be in sinking condition as well as losing a fair number of CVE and one CV confirmed.

The Allies land on Korea at Moppo, and thankfully I guessed right and have a bunch of divisions beginning to rail into the area starting tomorrow. Some free troops on the HI might move over as well to support. If the Allies have only 200k troops, that is probably around 5k-6k AV of late war stuff. Tough but not unstoppable. A lot of the Manchurian divisions are surprisingly strong in terms of experience, so there could be some holding spots. Terrain around Moppo is a problem though. I might think more of containment, keeping them at one base. We'll see how that goes.

Interesting, but it all seems a bit impatient to me. In a few months the Russians will simply roll this area anyway. Why risk all of this to land where you can walk?

Whatever the answer, it suits me just fine. If the Allies get a few further footholds they will have some good chances to bomb the Home Islands further, but will they dare in the daylight?

These reports, although extensive, only show about half of the naval combat and LBA missions during the day.

Losses: Lots of Es lost, but still lots left. They're cheap. I'll have to count up the rest.

Ships Sunk: We'll have to put a list together of possibles and probables. Might take a while!

Between the two days something like 30-40 amphib ships are hit, but still the Allies get 200k+ on the beaches.

... until I realized less than 20 strike planes were with each of the first few packages that had plenty of firepower to break through.

I get this part, but I'd have to say in this instance this explanation is not likely. Most of the other bombers simply didn't attack this TF where the fighters escorted small numbers of strike planes. I may be able to piece it together later, but most of the bombers from these bases struck other targets entirely instead of following on as you say into the same stream of strikes at this one target.

The strikes that hit ships ALL went to different targets, sometimes 5-8 hexes from these CVEs that most of the escorts flew into.

The escort penalty also doesn't make a lot of sense here if the 200 escorts are guiding in 15 bombers. Yet they suffer terribly in spite of being some of the best pilots on the map for the Japanese forces.

The Japanese surely wouldn't have been able to do something like this, wouldn't have this many good planes and pilots, etc, so I get that this is some kind of abstraction that actually works for the game I'm in, but the Allies have suffered the same fate multiple times. Is it really likely that 600 Hellcats would escort 25 Helldivers with nothing following as we saw just a few turns back?
