As a Yank, it seems to me that it's even bigger to the English than NFL is to us. It might be because they don't have the same number of huge sports going on at the same time. Also demographics and weather, perhaps.

In England there are just sooo many soccer teams playing all the time. The only other sports which comes close, as far as popularity goes, is cricket and rugby. At least that's the way it seems to me.

Just my 2 cents, I could be way off...

In fact my team is playing today - GO ARSENAL!!!!!

shaddock I hope you don't live in England with a remark like that!!! I could be naughty here and say "spoken like a true Arsenal fan"

"seems"..."bigger to the English than NFL is to us"..

Football is our national obsession (British not just English). The history is incredible. We started the whole thing in 1872 (FA Cup) 1888 (Football League Championship) 1857 formation of Sheffield FC (oldest Football club) 1872 England vs Scotland (oldest international fixture in the world). I believe we have the largest professional league in the world to - 92 clubs - so yes its big to us

The Barclays Premier League is widely recognised as the best league in the world (thanks to the money in the game, it brings some of the world's greatest footballers to these shores).

So in answer to the OP - NO! it is not like the NFL. And no, that remark is not designed to disparage US soccer (I sincerely hope it continues to grow and go from strength to strength (and I remember Belo Horizonte 1950 )) but in terms of where football ranks in Britain vs soccer in the US? No, not even close.

quote:

Don't have the same number of huge sports going on

I have no idea how the numbers would work out as a % of population, but we have plenty of other big sports: F1 (most teams based in the UK), Rugby, Cricket, Athletics, its just that football is....

No, Warspite1. He did not compare British Football with US soccer. He compared it with American football. National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league that has amazing attendance to its games. NFL probably has the biggest attendance numbers in the world so I find that it is a fair comparison.

Edit: Do you really say Barclay when you talk about the Premier League? Didn't they just pay a pile of money for the rights to the name? I would not like to say the complete name.

Apology accepted :)

Orm got it right. Besides I only started watching a few years ago.

And correct me if I'm wrong, didn't the BPL start after the Queen had to stop English Premiere because of too much hooliganism?

Why is it call the Barclay league?  I really want to know.  Just wondering.  The reason I ask, is that NBC sports here is carrying alot of the leagues games.  It got me to wondering.

Also, how long is their season?

Barclays pays a huge pile of money for the naming privilege.

The season is from August to May.

I don't understand why you named a sport as football when in most of the time the ball is played with the hands...
Why haven't you named American Rugby?

Jokes aside, it is the same sport

In the US and some parts of East Asia (if I am not mistaken) ie China, Korea, Japan, Singapur they call the FOOTBALL sport (aka the one you play with your FEET LOL) soccer.

The rest of the Galaxy does use the correct, original name aka FOOTBALL

What you Americans play is American Football. Just like there is Australian Football.

But football is and will always be er... Football LOL

I guess it has to be. The guy on the right is mythical Ferenc Puskás. And the guy on the left, from the colour of the shirt and badge, yep, it has to be Western Germany.

Slightly off topic, I watched the Channel 4 broadcast of the American Football game at Wembley a couple of months ago, what an utterly tedious game American Football seems to be. 3 hours of broadcast for about 10 minutes of actual play

Then again I'm a Man Utd fan so might just have to start supporting one of those American teams instead - no I take it back - we're concentrating on Europe this season, its all a cunning plan

I agree with you Wolfe, American football is, in a word, BORING!
Same with basketball and baseball.
Hockey though, nice!

Btw as an Arsenal fan I'm quite upset with the way we played today. Dang lucky to walk away with a point.

American college football is a better show than the NFL.  Hockey excellent game.  American Baseball(major Leagues), a work of art.  English football(soccer) is without a doubt a more strenuous sport.....hockey(maybe)be a runner up.

How can this be possible (I know nothing about this sport)? If I well understood the NFL guys are the authentic professional players, the elite (they only play football, their fulltime job I guess). The college players should be some sort of amateurs (they play AND study and maybe some job). Shouldn't the pros' games be more exciting?

That is true what you say about the NFL, and most of good college players want to go to the NFL. One of the problems in the NFL is that their quarterback is their franchise. So they put certain rules in place to protect them more than they do the other players. Next the college game is more colorful-music-cheerleaders-real rivalrys-players playing their hearts out for pride. In NFL, sometimes a player will lay back if he knows the play isn't coming his way. Last but not least, this year we had three college games that were without a doubt some of the most exciting ever played. NFL super bowl is known more as the SuperBore.

The NFL should be a faster game due to the player speed and ability(being the best) but a player coming up for a 7 million dollar contract doesn't want to get hurt and reduce his saleability. Don't get me wrong I like the NFL, but ive watched it since I was a boy of eight-watched the old NFL and AFL. And some of the changes they made are hurting the game. They are some who like the NFL better, I understand why they do, but to me a division one ticket is better than a regular NFL ticket any day.

Note also: If your college team folds due to funding it doesn't leave town. In the NFL they can move to another town and your stuck with all those items you bought supporting them. Such as-Ceveland had a team since forever(Browns) but they moved. Cleveland had to wait three years to get another team. Houston to Nashville, St. Louis to Phoenix, LA Rams to St. Louis. There are more of them.....this is just a few in my life time. Colts they moved.

I assume you refer to us beating the Portugese in the semis?

But I was referring to the two best teams by a bzillion miles - and yet they managed to lose to West Germany in the final....a real shame

Thanks for the explanation

I understand perfectly well your reasoning. It's curious how teams can "move", leave areas. In football (or soccer) teams are necessarily stuck to geographical places (towns, which they represent). They don't move but they can disappear sometimes due to economical difficulties (not the top, historical teams though).

It is the eternal dilemma: amateurism vs proffesionalism. The former is more pure and the latter has attracted a lot of big money (if the sport is popular enough). Still, I prefer the latter because I want to see the most skilled players (any sport).

Don't you think England wasn't better than W.Germany in 1966? I don't even remember W. Germany players, besides Beckenbauer, while English you have the Charlton brothers, Bobby Moore, etc...
Besides, you have beat Portugal in the semi, probably the best team.

With the NFL you have the same teams and the same numbers of teams playing year after year. An individual team can move and change it's name, but it's still the same team. The only way it changes is if the NFL adds or subtracts teams.

In the BPL and, I think, most other countries they have a system called relegation. There are multiple tiers of leagues, each playing amongst themselves. In essence the bottom 3 teams drop to the lower tier league and the top 3 from the lower tier bumps up.

IN the US we have nothing like this. The closest I can think of for an example is baseball. There is MLB (Major League Baseball) and under that is AAA. You take the 3 worst teams in the MLB and relegate them to AAA. Take the 3 best teams in AAA and send them to MLB.

I actually like this system better than what we have now. The US system is more about the individual where the relegation system is all about the team. Yes, the players still move from team to team, but in the end it's still the team that matters.

They add them but from where exactly? I mean, they were coming from somewhere. Inferior leagues (like in soccer)?

I guess I more or less understand. These teams are built by and for entrepreneurs. And given that they seek the maximum profit they will move to x place (town) as long as that place offers more profits. Correct?

So let's imagine the town of Anchorage or a group of entrepreneurs create a new team from scratch. How will they get to the NFL league? They must be invited? If there is no invitation, where will they play?

As far as my limited understanding goes the NFL will decide to expand. That only happens but very rarely (once 20 years or so). Then I guess it's up to a city to show they will have the visitor numbers, week in week out, to generate the interest and income the NFL demands (no idea what that might be).

So if the NFL wants to expand and Anchorage can show they can fill 50,000 seat stadium for every game, they might stand a better chance of getting a team. Rather than the small town who can only manage to fill 10,000 or less.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, there is no lower level league for football like there is in MLB.
