For now my schedule for AT is to first make some patches with some experimental new features for the existing ATG game:
*Officers (like in People's Tactics) (around christmas i hope)
*Developing your own tanks and module-based research (around easter i hope)

Sounds awesome !

... Such a game would probably focus mainly on AI and Interface improvements....

OOohhhh.... What a tease.

Love that art style as well especially the troops and all that. Hopefully there will be more troop variety in future ATs or promotion system where your normal infantry brigade could become a special forces unit if they meet certain conditions like if they won a lot of battles on mountains they will become a special mountain division or something like that.

Looking forward for more games from VR designs.

This reminds me C-evo (http://www.c-evo.org/) where all units (land, naval, air) are developed by the player. Too bad the game does not have PBEM option.

this game will be more innovative and i intend to make it bridge the gap between general strategy game titles and more wargamish titles.

ATG can be taken right down to where line of sight becomes important, so we're getting pretty tactical.

... and it will be St Andrews Day in a few minutes time, so we are running out of November.

Another tidbit I picked up in the Case Blue forum re Vic's new game:

"The new project is a more entry level wargame." (12/24)

He also mentioned he might start a second project along the lines of Decisive Campaigns. I would surmise based on this that an AT Platinum isn't in the offing anytime soon. That said, Vic continues to add new features to ATG and I believe by Easter he has stated we might see a more full featured production system that lets you model your own tanks.

Thats correct, adding a few big features to ATG is defenitely still in the planning. Another reason for postponing ATP is that the new mystery project is much more similar to AT than to DC and I want the upcoming releases to be as different from eachother as possible, as well as spend some of my time working on a historical game (DC).

Ideas are not the problem. Limited time for development is.

Best,
Vic

May development progress report (vrdesigns.nl)
Posted on June 6, 2013 by vic

I have found a publisher for the new mystery title. So soon the veil of mystery will be lifted and some more information will then be forthcoming.
--------

Some news about a new PBEM system: I doubt this will be retrofitted onto ATG, but highly likely a future Advanced Tactics Platinum would support it. Of course, as the Twitter exchange below indicates, Vic's new mystery game almost certainly will.

Twitter Exchange

Andrea Nicola @AndreaN_Pet 13 Jun
Working on PBEM2++ system tweaks: we just found some server limits I'm going to get around!

Victor Reijkersz @VRdesigns 13 Jun
@AndreaN_Pet good to hear its getting close to finished :) what are pbem2++ best new features?

Andrea Nicola @AndreaN_Pet 14 Jun
@VRdesigns PBEM2++ lets you play 1vs1, in teams and games with multiple sides. It also lets clients freely customize their own parameters

Victor Reijkersz ‏@VRdesigns 14 Jun
@AndreaN_Pet cool! but will 4 or 6 player all against all also work?

Andrea Nicola @AndreaN_Pet 14 Jun
@VRdesigns yes! the system lets you play all against all, 2 vs 2 vs 2, or any other combination, there's no limit :-)

Victor Reijkersz ‏@VRdesigns 14 Jun
looking forward to implementing pbem2++ for my next title :)

@Jeffrey,

Well the game will be aimed at a bit of a larger audience, but it will sport a logistical/supply system actually a little bit more intricate than ATG and it will defenitely not field any german panzers of any kind for sure :)

Best,
Vic

Hrrm, "larger audience", no german panzers. Got to be a LOTR knock off then. But why would that type of game need an intricate logistical supply system ? Doesn't add up.

Maybe a space 4x type setting ? ooohhhh, that might be cool.

This is interesting. The logical reason for doing this would be that compared with ATG the new game is closer to the tactical than ATG.

Are we allowed to ask whether the new game takes line-of-sight into account?

Maybe an ancients game, you know; foot soldiers cavalry archers that sort of thing ? No German Panzers at least.

Or maybe a future "bugs vs. humans" Starship Troopers/WH40K type game ?

Don't think it will be an ancients game: "For example it will be possible to cut of enemy strongholds and starve the troops there to dead or for troops beyond your supply network to run out of ammunition." Never heard of swords, spears, arrows, etc referred to as ammunition. That sounds like bullets to me. Also don't believe Vic is into SciFi type games. Hope we get some definitive word soon on the nature of this mystery game. Not sure why it is still under wraps.

There has been a lot of harping on the general discussion forums for an "age of rifles" tye game. Not sure what that means, period wise, but it might fit the description of what has been leaked out to date.

Working name "Empire"

Could be anything from 30 Years War, to Napoleonic, to Franco-Prussian, to possibly even Russo-Japanese. But not WW1, because then there's the possibility that a German Panzer could exist.

Well what I liked about AT:

Random scenario generator.
Supply system important enough to make you think about supply but not too tedious.
Games from Ancients and Napoleonic as well as WW2 - with Zaratougha's mod (still play it - thanks Z).

What I didn't like - not being able to turn off production every turn - sometimes I just want a quick scrap.

This game had the chance to be a "universal wargame" - an approachable TOAW - that could cover any period and just might have been approachable enough to get more people into wargaming. Unfortunately I fear it succumbed to the enthusiasts who wanted more complexity.

Tip for new game - produce a manual that can be understood by a human being with an IQ approximately equal to their body temperature. (Fahrenheit not Centigrade !)

What exactly was said about German panzers? Because "Empire" fits to games like AT very well too.
Original Empire was similar to AT with random maps. Here is some Empire "Deluxe Enhanced Edition", but still looks like very old game http://www.killerbeesoftware.com/kbsgames/edee/

Hi Webizen,

I visited the Slitherine offices yesterday and had a big talk with them. They are still enthusiastic about the mystery project and where it is heading. I think we are about at the halfway point in development.

Going to write a new developer log this weekend and actually announce the type of setting.

Best,
Vic

I just read Vic's post.
This is great news!!!

Could it be a game covering years 1700 to 1890?

No matter what the new game is I'm sure it will be a hit!
Thanks Vic

Here is Vic's latest update about his new game. It will be a release day purchase for me!

http://www.vrdesigns.nl/?p=645

This is the part of the game description that sold me:

quote:

{While} workname Empire might be a bit more simple concerning interface, flow and play than Advanced Tactics, it will very much be a blend between a strategy game and a wargame. There are frontlines there, entrenchment, supply bases, panzer encirclements, air support, concentric attacks, combined arms, landscape considerations, road networks, airfields, intercepts, opportunity fire, ambushes: everything that is necessary to create a game that rewards decent planning and outsmarting your opponent. Do not expect an infantry-only assault with twice the number of troops to break easily (or at all) through an entrenched enemy infantry line.

One small concern is the statement: "It has hexes, but not counters." I suppose this might mean the use of 3D units vice 2D counters like in AT/ATG. If that is the case then I'd hope the 3D units can be changed with a mod. Even if not, it isn't a deal breaker for me.

Vic has posted an update about his new game engine on his website. http://www.vrdesigns.nl/

This is an excerpt: "Workname Empire is set in a post-apocalyptic era on a distant planet. Its a turn-based strategy game with exploration, research and intricate combat and logistics rules. It has hexes, but not counters. The initial tech levels will be reminiscent of mid 20th century technology, while the higher tech levels will be more in the science fiction era."

While not something of interest to me I wish him the best of luck with his new game.
