The problem with a lot of these discussions is that some folks are only interested in their pocket book. If the company goes bankrupt they just simply don't care as long as they get their discount. A lot of games that are on matrix would never even get considered at other publishers. First person shooter skinned with WW2 skins where do i sign... A hex based, turned based game!!! Wargames are so dead and we will not have anything to do with them, but if you can get a shooter just let us know...

I understand many of our board member might be from communist countries but here in the west we need to make a profit to stay in business.

More like they are displaying the tendency to exploit others that characterizes the privileged.

Think your missing the point. We are talking about the old games say 4\5 years or more. Or ones that have been superseded like WITP.

No one wants Slitherine to go bankrupt..

What they would like to see is the old games reduced..which a could bring in new customers also get some money out to those developers and may even bring new people into the wargame genre. Also their current customers can try out games that they weren't inclined to spend that much on as it wasn't really their scale\theater\era etc...lower the price hey lots of happy customers..lots of new customers..

Certainly wouldn't bankrupt Slitherine..if they have to rely on those old games selling at the moment to stay afloat they are in big trouble. The impact surely will be positive rather than negative.

Again I'm not talking about new\recent games or lowering tier price..juts the old ones.

You are missing out a step there. It might well not bankrupt us, but it could well mean dire straits for the developer relying on those residuals if it turned out that no more copies were sold, yet income was reduced by 50% or more.

Cheers

I'm not so much looking at a single title but rather a overall direction of sales. Being an old fart I remember when computers were first sold retail. Prices were slashed to the bone to try to gain market share - should have been just rolling in the dough according to some here, however every one involved was for all purposes bankrupted. You have two camps, one calling wargames a niche market and another thinking that all you have to do is sell them at bargain basement prices and 8 year olds will start playing witp:ae. Low prices with large volume of sales works with products that everyone wants. For products that only a few want low prices won't cover the costs to develop, market and manufacture it. I think the brake down is the idea that if you price something low enough that everyone will want it. If you hate cheese you will not buy it just because it's marked down to 75% so you can throw it in the trash... For some products there is a maximum pool of potential customers that will buy it even if it's a dollar. Everyone I work with HATES history and you WILL NOT change their minds so the concept of them buying a historical game regardless of the price is out their. I have offered to give games to folks I work with for free and have been told in some cases not only no, but h**l no. Call of duty though - their all over that...

It's amazing how often these threads come up. Matrixgames doesn't even release the number of units sold, let alone a PL statement. You guys speculating have absolutely no idea what you're even talking about. Did they make a profit last year? Who knows? Unless they've opened their books to the public - nobody but the owners know. Blind speculation is boring.

And you are plucking a particular, and unlikely, scenario out of nowhere. Why should it 'turn out' like that? Nobody is suggesting a massive boost in sales is likely, as the purpose of cost reductions of old games would be more about introducing new people to the hobby and then buying future games at full price than any immediate revenue increase. However, the only level of sales at which 'no additional' is really plausible is at or around zero - in which case a reduction in income cannot be a problem!

If you have no interest in the subject, the price will not matter. Here, you can get War in Russia for *free*, and I'm not interested. Nobody I know is interested. I've played Master of Orion 2 or Total Annihilation or Imperialism 2 with with the same group almost every Saturday for a few years. They had absolutely no interest in WiTP or anything of that ilk.

Pip..really..these developers are relying on the sales of their old games i.e 5 years plus to keep themselves in business\fed etc etc? Well I'd love to know who is buying these older games in those sorts of quantities and why the forums for many of them are dead which is odd as people who have spent say $39.99 on a game would I'm sure visit the forum to ask questions etc..and if as it seems a fair few of these games are being sold then I'd expect a fair few people and new ones arriving in said forums.

Infact I think the developers would end up with more money in their pocket if the price was reduced and they started leaving the shelves again.

Anyway Iain said he would ask the developers first.

It's just such a great way to entice new customers...also make your current customer base happy and loyal (though we haven't got many other places to go as you and paradox john tiller and HPS are the only other places, and Slitherine certainly have the biggest share of titles).

Anyway I know I'm just repeating myself over and over and I'm boring myself;)

So thats me finished on the subject.

Most customers that purchase games never post anything on the forums , I know a few that are huge fans of the hobby that want nothing to do with the forums here or anywhere for that matter.

The price matters alot to me because my money doesn't grow on trees. If it does for you then pass it around.

If a game is priced more than it sold for upon release, then there seems to be a miscommunication within the marketing department of Slitherine Group. If they did that on purpose then God help their souls because they've opened up a whole can of worms they don't want to take on.

1: If you had actually read it, you would of seen the words "If you're not interested." So try reading again.

2: If money is a problem for you, you have no business buying a game. So still, the price will not matter.

You guys just put discounts on 37 old titles. So, are the devs starving now? Or, did you finally pull your head out of your a**?

These threads amaze me every time we start one.

I'm not as nice or PC as my friend Orm so I'm gonna sound off.

They bought the rights to the game. That means they have the right to charge as much or as little as they please. Period.

Thank God we don't live in some "Utopian" socialist society where prices are fixed so it's "fair". Life's not fair. Accept that fact. Ain't gonna change. If you can't afford the game, don't buy it until you can afford it. Re-prioritize if it's that important to you. But don't clog these forums with this ****e.

You stated your opinion. Fine. Move on. Multiple pages of this crap is damn near trolling.

Nate

Quoting Iain:

Everyone has had their say and it keeps going round in circles. There is nothing new here so I'm going to close it down as its not adding anything to the forum and these threads tend to degenerate in to personal attacks at some point.
