Due to work going on at my home I've got limited access to my office for a while and wifi is less than optimal so new entries to the AAR will probably be not as regualr as we'd like. Sorry.

32 miles NE of Singkawang the SS Haddo unsuccessfully attacked a pair of TKs and their escorts, 1 PG and 2 PCs. The sub was then located and given the most horrible attack resulting in her demise.

Nagasaki was attacked by 59 X B-24J and 21 X P-51D who fended off 1 Nick and 11 Franks. 6 of the Franks were splashed and a Mustang was damaged. Kitakyushu's defenses were caught napping as 171 X B-29 appeared, dropped their loads and departed before any kind of reaction by the Japanese could be effected. The heavy industry took heavy damage.

Tokyo was swept by 135 X P-51D who sliced into a gaggle of 3 X Reppu, 13 X Shinden, 90 X Frank and 15 X Tony. 22 Mustangs were lost and 5 were damaged while the Japanese had 3 Reppus, 9 Shindens, 83 Franks and 15 Tonys destroyed.

At Kweiyang the Japanese had very light casualties from the Chinese artillery.

Scuttlebutt has it that an operation is going to be launched soon and it will allow the B-29s to be based on Japan's doorstep. The Lucky 11 have wondered if they would have to fly from Saipan to Japan forever and now they have hope that answer promising a better chance of survival beckons. Gil retires for the night feeling a little more positive even if the news was only rumors. He falls asleep dream of home.

PM Curtin stares out of the window, crushing the piece of paper in his hand. “I thought that this would go a bit better than it is.” The US has provided shipping, but the ground force is made up of Aussies and he had been afraid that to many boys are being killed. “I'd have thought that the Japanese would have given up the pointless fight by now.”

Allied troops going ashore had extremely heavy casualties. Artillery exchanges inflicted negligible losses on both sides. The Allied forces attacked the defenders, taking a little ground as both sides had very heavy casualties.

The SS Dentuda, 88 miles N of Kragen, attacked a lone AK, hitting it with the deck gun 5 times and 2 torpedoes also struck home. The ship was heavily damaged and burning before she broke up and slipped beneath the waves. The Dentuda continued on her patrol and about 141 miles N of Kragen she attacked an AK and MSW, hitting the AK with a fish that started a fire. In the afternoon the sub attacked an AK, striking it with a torpedo for heavy damage and fires.

In the late afternoon the sub attacked a lone AK feeding it 3 fish that wrecked the ship and it was burning from stem to stern, finally sinking after an internal explosion ripped her apart.

At Kweiyang the Japanese had very light troop losses from the Chinese artillery.

Waingapu fell to the USMC Raiders as they swept over the base against no opposition.

Bali in is the hands of the USMC Raiders after they found no organized Japanese defense there.

Many of the Mighty Mo's crew are on Mogmog, one of the small islands that comprise the Ulithi Atoll, enjoying some liberty. Although it isn't home there is a swimming beach, some basketball courts, facilities to toss horseshoes, you can use the baseball diamonds and there even is a football field. Soft drinks are available and the enlisted personnel can have up to 2 bottles of beer per day, paid for by the ship's welfare fund. The officers have a bar that offers them scotch or bourbon at 20cents a shot and Bill ****s there with some of his officers enjoying some time away from the war. They wander over to watch a baseball game between their crew and that of some other ships. The men poke each other and point to the approaching officers who flop down on the ground and start cheering their team on.

So tomorrow they are going to go back to Japan. The Lucky 11 jokingly say that they've been there so often that it's more familiar than home. On second thought home seems to be a distant memory, thinks Gil and this damned war is his only reality. Hearing from Elaine that her brother had recently returned from Europe Gil feels let down by the Army. How can they let soldiers go home when there's a war being fought? What he doesn't know is that Elaine's brother hasn't been discharged, just given leave.

Sam and Frankie sit on the hill watching the planes. Actually Frankie is watching Sam who brought along some food and the dog whines as saliva runs down his chest as he sits there waiting for Sam to share. Sam tries to keep everything from getting to him, but he's upset that the 25th Division remains on Tori Shima despite their relief being here.

Combat

An A-26B Invader spotted an AG at near Hakodate and claimed a hit. A few hours later a B-25J reported that they had spotted an AG and hit it with a bomb. These were considered different craft as the second one appeared not to have been previously damaged. Kills were awarded for each attack.

At Malang the Japanese continued firing at the unloading ships and troops coming ashore, who took moderate casualties. The ships fired back inflicting very light losses on the Japanese.
CL Hobart 2 shell hits
AK Forafric 3 shell hits, on fire, heavy damage
DD Tucker 1 shell hit
An attack was made by 17 X Liberator VI who were intercepted by 7 X Frank and 3 X Tony. A Frank was damaged and a Tony was shot down and another damaged. 2 of the bombers were damaged and they caused very light airstrip damage, a secondary explosion, a Grace was burning and casualties were moderate. Later 50 X SB2C (1 downed, 5 damaged), 26 X TBF (4 damaged), 65 X TBM (1 downed, 11 damaged), 29 X F6F, 16 X FM-2 and 16 X F4F-4 (1 damaged) were greeted by 4 X Frank (1 damaged) and 3 X Tony (3 splashed). The airfield was moderately damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were seen, a Tony and a Grace were burning and personnel losses were light. Japanese artillery barrages caused no harm and the Allied troops surged forwards once more, taking more ground inflicting very heavy casualties on the Japanese troops while suffering heavy losses of their own. Japanese transports flying into and out of the base were intercepted by Allied fighters.

Padang was awakened by 4 Helens who dropped their bombs in the water and were chased away by 3 Mosquito FB.VIs.

The SS Boarfish attacked an AK and an MSW 88 miles SE of Singapore. The AK was burning and heavily damaged by the 2 torpedo hits made on it.

27 miles SE of Singapore, the SS Truculent made an unsuccessful attack on an AK and an MSW. The Japanese probably never even knew the sub was there based on their continuing on the same course, at the same speed.

Hamamatsu was attacked by 186 X B-29 and 2 Zekes (1 damaged) approached, but never attacked the bombers. The AA fire did damage 2 of the B-29s. The heavy industry was subjected to very heavy damage. Another 57 X B-29 arrived and the flak damaged 2 of them as they hit the Nakajima engine factory. Then another 44 X B-29 (2 damaged) attacked the same target. The Nakajima engine plant was lightly damaged by the attacks made on it.

Kitakyushu was raided by 140 X B-29 and 59 X P-38J and the bombers caused moderate damage to the Nakajima engine works. Another 24 X B-29 followed, but they dropped their loads harmlessly.

At Kweiyang the IJA 59th Division downed a Mitchell and damaged 12 others as the Chinese inflicted heavy losses on the unit. The IJA 69th Division damaged 4 Mitchells and took moderate casualties in an air raid. The Chinese artillery accounted for moderate Japanese losses.

21 miles W of Singapore 19 X Betty, 22 X Frances, 5 X Emily, 3 X Helen and 12 X Randy went for the HMS Cumberland. The ship put up a valiant fight and despite masterful handling she was hit by 4 torpedoes that heavily damaged her and caused raging fires. 19 X Betty and 12 X Frances were damaged and 2 X Frances, 5 X Emily and 12 X Randy were shot down. The promised air cover never materialized. What the Cumberland was doing there contrary to orders and where the 2 DDs assigned to her were are unknown.

“How long do you think we'll just laze around here? Maybe they forgot all about our little tub and we'll actually get back to Hawaii someday,” says Red. Cookie wonders the same thing, but he's content to sit out the rest of the war. He says that he doesn't think that they can get that lucky.

Stick is joking around with the other guys and they're told to behave themselves as tomorrow CAP could become interesting as more ships are scheduled to arrive. The pilots don't believe the Japanese will try anything. “They're saving themselves for the invasion of Japan,” says Stick. The CO laughs at him and says that the Navy is in big trouble then because the Flying Deuces lack the range to protect them then. Stick is scheduled for CAP with the first flight.

The Lucky 11 have another mission under their belts and are happy to be alive. The mission started out with one of the runways being closed as a B-29 never got off the ground and exploded. It was an awful thing to see and it haunted many a crewman on the way to Japan. By the time they had returned to Saipan there was no hint of the accident and the guys had pushed it out of their minds. Gel, the engineer, had remarked once again at how the B-29's engines weren't powerful enough to really do the job and that the AAC should build new models with an upgrade to them.

Combat

A PB2Y Coronado spotted an AG near Hakodate and claimed a hit that sank the craft.

At Malang the Allied ships and troops heading ashore continue to get a rough time from the Japanese artillery.
AK Forafric 1 shell hit, sunk
AK Chilka 3 shell hits, on fire, heavy damage
A Walrus was shot down by 8 Franks and 3 Tonys who were protecting the base. Later 6 Franks and 2 Tonys were shot down trying to stop an inbound raid of 50 X SB2C (8 damaged), 26 X TBF (3 damaged), 68 X TBM (11 damaged), 30 X F6F (1 downed), 16 X FM-2 and 15 X F4F-4. The airfield was moderately damaged, a secondary explosion was seen, 3 Franks and a Tony were trashed and casualties were heavy. The Japanese artillery shelled the Allied positions throughout the day and failed to harm anyone. An assault made by the Allies took some more ground. The Allies had heavy losses and the Japanese suffered very heavy casualties. Japanese transport flights were intercepted by Allied fighters.

Padang underwent another night time raid by 6 Helens who caused no harm.

The SS Boarfish attacked a lone AK 33 miles SE of Singapore, hitting it with 3 torpedoes that caused it to sink. Later the sub attacked a TK accompanied by a PG and 2 PCs. A fish blew a hole in the side of the TK, starting a fire and the escorts pounced on the Boarfish, killing her.

Kitakyushu was struck by 134 X B-29, who encountered no opposition, and they hit the armaments works for moderate damage. Another strike comprised of 169 X B-29 arrived a short time later and they too were unchallenged. The heavy industry took heavy damage from the attack.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division absorbed moderate casualties from an air raid made on it.

On the first day in a week that Warhawks weren't on patrol 27 X Judy arrived and attacked the 6th Chinese Cavalry Corps, about 140 miles SW of Chungking. The unit took moderate losses.

At Kweiyang the Chinese inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese with their artillery.

Sam was excited to see some transports anchored, but there are no orders for the 25th so his hopes quickly faded. Supplies pour out of the holds of these vessels and the fighters are extra busy today as usual when ships arrive. He knows that all of the engineering units are being pulled out before the first soldier of the 25th will get to board a ship off of this rock. The good news is that Frankie is going to come as the company's CO has already told Sam that once aboard the ship the dog is his problem.

Stick got out of the cockpit and told his crew chief that the plane was running like a top. No Japanese planes were spotted, but that's fine with Stick as he's just concerned with doing his job. In the afternoon he's on standby in case more planes are needed, but he doubts it. Besides there being 3 squadrons of Corsairs there are Mustangs and Lightnings too so there's plenty of firepower to draw from.

Combat

The Coastal Guns at Malang kept up their firing on the ships.
AK Chilka 9 shell hits, sunk
Japanese artillery barrages inflicted light losses on the Allies and the Allied big guns caused extremely light Japanese casualties. Japanese transport planes were intercepted by Allied fighters.

Padang was roused from it's slumbers by 6 X Helen who did no harm.

Shanghai was raided by 126 X B-25J (6 damaged) who caused heavy airfield damage and a few secondary explosions were claimed.

Bangkok was bombed by 153 X Liberator VI (15 damaged) for very heavy airfield damage, many secondary explosions were reported and casualties were very heavy. Later 48 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 11 damaged) and 13 X Thunderbolt II hit the port for moderate damage, a couple of secondary explosions were observed and casualties were moderate.

At Gili Gili 21st Division took light losses in an air raid.

Near Teloekbetoeng 6 X Zero and 3 X Oscar had the misfortune to run into 6 X P-47D, 18 X Thunderbolt II and 4 X Spitfire VIII. All of the Japanese planes were splashed without loss for the Allies.

At Georgetown a single Rufe met with 48 X Mosquito FB.VI, 25 X Corsair IV, 25 X Spitfire VIII and 12 X Firefly. The Rufe was quickly disposed of and then the airstrip was subjected to moderate damage and there were some secondary explosions seen.

Palembang was raided by 28 X Mosquito FB.VI (3 damaged) and 12 X Thunderbolt II who struck the airstrip for very light damage, a couple of secondary explosions, 3 Tinas were burning and casualties were very light.

At Kweiyang the Japanese had heavy losses from the Chinese artillery.

The CA Cumberland continues to limp towards a friendly port. She has somehow miraculously survived the attack and continues to put distance between herself and the Japanese planes that hunted her. Tomorrow she should reach the point where friendly fighters can cover her. She has heavy systems damage, heavy flooding and there are still a few fires burning.

Stalin reads the reports and and nods his approval. “The Japanese are going to be shocked as our forces will test them shortly.” There is much doubt among the generals who want to wait for better weather, but Stalin insists and to argue is foolish and deadly.

Harry is leaning towards using his new super weapon in an effort to end the war. He has no illusions about the Brits and French wanting his help in reapplying the old status quo. He also feels that China will just turn to fighting itself. The Soviets are a major concern as Stalin wants all he can grab and more. “I wouldn't be surprised if he declared war on the Japanese any time now,” he said to General Marshall. Still the only way he can justify using the A bomb is to “save” lives.

Combat

A PB2Y Coronado spotted and attacked an AK near Niigata, claiming a hit. Niigata was being protected by 3 X Nick and 13 X Frank when 105 X B-29, 21 X B-24J and 15 X P-51D arrived. The Mustangs dealt with the Japanese fighters downing a Nick and 5 Franks with 2 more Franks damaged. The AA fire shot down a B-29 and damaged 10 others as they caused heavy damage to the heavy industry.

A night time raid on Padang was made by 6 Helens who dropped their bombs into the jungle, far from the base.

Kitakyushu was caught napping by 142 X B-29 and 113 X P-38J who struck the heavy industry for very heavy damage and then departed unscathed.

Wakkanai was swept by 21 P-51Ds and the 3 Franks that were in the area ducked into the clouds to make good their escape.

Pontianak was raided by 21 X Liberator VI and 28 X Thunderbolt II who bombed the anchored ships while doing light damage to the port.
CL Kitakami 1 bomb hit, heavy damage
CA Haguro 3 bomb hits, heavy damage
CL Oi 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage

Balikpapan was attacked by 23 X B-24J (5 damaged) and 61 X P-38J for very light airfield damage, a couple of secondary explosions and negligible casualties. Later in the day 12 X PB4Y (5 damaged) and 4 X Kittyhawk II attacked and inflicted moderate damage on the port, a secondary explosion was claimed and personnel losses were negligible. Another strike arrived in the late afternoon comprised of 49 X PB4Y who hit the airstrip for moderate damage, there were many secondary explosions seen and casualties were moderate.

At Malang the Japanese CAP damaged a snooping Walrus. Later on the 4 Franks and 5 Tonys on CAP were faced with a raid made by 46 X SB2C (1 downed, 4 damaged), 24 X TBF (2 damaged(, 71 X TBM (6 damaged), 33 X F6F (2 downed), 16 X FM-2 and 13 X F4F-4. All but 2 Tonys were shot down and the airstrip was very lightly damaged, the port took light damage, there were a very large number of secondary explosions seen, a Grace was burning and casualties were heavy. An artillery bombardment by the Japanese was ineffective while the Allied response inflicted moderate losses on the Japanese. Japanese transport planes continued to be intercepted by Allied fighters.

At Gili Gili 21st Division was hit by Allied planes for moderate losses.

At Naha the IJA 51st Ind. Mixed Brigade was pounced on by 57 X B-25J (7 damaged) for moderate casualties. The IJA 47th Division was struck by 76 X B-24D (1 downed, 3 damaged) and 105 X B-24J (3 damaged) for heavy losses.

At Kweiyang the Japanese absorbed moderate casualties from the Chinese artillery.

The Cumberland continues her battle against the sea and despite the odds that were stacked against her it is looking like she's going to make it to a port.

The generals have finished their planning to Stalin's satisfaction, but now it remains to be seen what the weather will be like.

The Lucky 11 leave the hut and are less than thrilled to know that tomorrow they are expected to be over Japan once again. Gil has been feeling down as he sorely misses home. The guys sit around talking about home and they lament that the guys who fought in Europe has places to go and see when they got some leave. “Here on Saipan you get to go to the latrine,” says Hoppy. They bemoan the lack of escape from this seemingly never ending war.

Slim showed a new lad how to handle the machine gun and when he finished he coaching him demanding that the lad become faster at the task. “If you can't set up and start firing faster the Japanese will make us all suffer for it.” By the time his platoon has left the range the new lad has shown great improvement and Slim sports a grin when he gives a well done. “When we go into combat all you have to do is remember your training and you'll be fine,” Slim says before they set off for chow.

Combat

A B-25J spotted an AG near Hakodate and claimed a hit. Nearby a PB2Y Coronado spotted an AG and also reported a hit. A short time later an A-26B spotted an AG hat appeared to have been previously damaged and they too claimed a hit.

Once again Padang was awakened by an attack made by 6 Helens. The AA fire damaged a Helen and the Japanese once more failed to do any harm.

Near Singapore the SS Spiteful tried to attack an AK under escort by 4 PGs, but she failed to penetrate the screen. The sub had finished laying her mines at Singapore and is on the way home with a disappointed crew.

Gumma was attacked by 45 X B-24D and 5 X P-38J. The Japanese intercepted them with 8 X Zeke, 35 X Frank and 39 X Tony. The Lightnings did their best against the awful odds and lost 2 planes. The Japanese fighters and flak destroyed 9 Liberators and damaged 27 others. 2 Zekes, 3 Franks (15 damaged) and 3 Tonys (18 damaged) were destroyed. The Nakajima engine plant was very lightly damaged.

Toyama was hit by 109 X B-29 and the defenses were non existent as all of the planes departed unharmed after dumping their bombs. Another wave consisting of 95 X B-29 came on and they too dropped their loads and departed unscathed. A third wave of 38 X B-29 arrived and they also hit and departed suffering no harm. Heavy damage to the heavy industry was done by these attacks.

Nagasaki was raided by 193 X B-29 (7 damaged), 36 X P-51D (1 damaged) and 40 X P-38J who ran over the CAP of 4 X Nick and 33 X Frank. 4 Nicks and 19 Franks were splashed as the Allied fighters kept them off of the bombers who managed to inflict moderate damage on the heavy industry.

Hiroshima/Kure was struck by 138 X B-29 (4 damaged), 92 X B-24J (1 downed, 3 damaged) and 72 X P-51D (6 downed). The Japanese intercepted with 16 X Shinden and 2 X Zeke and all but 4 Shindens were shot down by the Mustangs who kept the Japanese planes away from the bombers. The Nakajima engine factory was moderately damaged.

Wakkanai was swept by 21 X P-51D and the 3 Franks that were up ran before any combat could take place.

Bangkok was visited by 136 X Liberator VI (1 downed, 18 damaged) who did extremely heavy damage to the airfield, triggered many secondary explosions and inflicted heavy casualties. At almost the same time 39 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 13 damaged) and 26 X Thunderbolt II hit the port for moderate damage, there were many secondary explosions seen and personnel losses were negligible.

Operation Thunder is moving along and there is an excitement in the Pentagon that seems to permeate the air. Of course not that many know about Thunder at all and few actually know what, where and when. It amazes the President when he learns that so many people are involved in the planning and yet most of them don't have a clue as to what they are actually working on. That evening Harry has his top advisers gathered at the White House when he makes the announcement that he is giving the green light to use the A bomb on Japan. Of course only those in the inner circle are present and they either already know of the weapon or they are learning of it now. There is very little dissent as everyone gathered is aware that the nation is tiring of the war and they need to bring it to a successful and quick conclusion. “I don't like the idea of so many dead people, but the B-29 raids have been devastating Japan for some time now. I also would rather see dead Japanese instead of our boys,” Harry said when there had been a little opposition expressed to using the weapon.

A PBM spotted an AK near Niigata and claimed a hit.

Padang was awakened by 4 Helens who bombed the jungle in another fruitless night time attack.

Pontianak was struck by 16 X Liberator VI and 23 X Thunderbolt II. No facilities were damaged, but a secondary explosion was seen and the ships in the harbor suffered.
CA Haguro 5 bomb hits, heavy damage
AK Momoha Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
27 X Mosquito FB.VI and 29 X Thunderbolt II struck in the afternoon doing light damage to the port, a secondary explosion was observed and the shipping caught it too.
CA Haguro 5 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage

Balikpapan underwent a raid in which the airfield was moderately damaged, a secondary explosion was seen and casualties were moderate. Late in the morning another raid caused negligible damage to the airstrip. 5 Liberators of various types were damaged in the attacks. In the afternoon another strike caused light airfield damage, there were a few secondary explosions reported and personnel losses were negligible.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division took light losses in an air strike made on it.

At Naha the IJA 51st Ind. Mixed Brigade had moderate casualties and 3 Mitchells were damaged in an air raid. The IJA 47th Division had moderately heavy losses from an air attack. The IJA 53rd Ind. Mixed Brigade absorbed moderate casualties and 6 Liberators were damaged in another raid.

Wakkanai was swept by 18 X P-51D who couldn't catch the 2 Franks on patrol.

An air attack was made on Malang by 32 X SB2C (2 downed, 7 damaged), 24 X TBF (3 damaged), 55 X TBM (1 downed, 10 damaged), 25 X F6F, 16 X FM-2 and 16 X F4F-4. A Frank and a Tony were up and both were splashed. The airstrip was subjected to negligible damage, the port took light damage, there were some secondary explosions seen, a Tony was burning and troop losses were heavy. Japanese artillery inflicted light casualties on the Allied troops. The Allied bombardment of the Japanese defenders caused moderate losses. Japanese transport planes were intercepted by roving Allied fighters.

Near Teloekbetoeng 2 X Zero and 2 X Oscar challenged the CAP of 4 Spits and 28 Jugs resulting in 4 Japanese fighters going down.

At Kweiyang the Chinese artillery barrages accounted for moderate Japanese casualties.

Amid much fanfare the CA Cumberland limped into Teloekbetoeng's harbor. Men stood there in amazement that a ship in such horrid condition actually managed to make it so far in hostile waters. The crew are exhausted from their labors at keeping their ship afloat. Though repairs will ultimately be made at a repair yard the cruiser's flooding problems will be worked on before her journey continues.

Slim has his lads ready, but it seems that they'll have more time on their hands as the Corps doesn't have the need for them just yet. The guys drift off to a slopchute and some are content to latch onto some pogeybait. Slim makes for the slopchute where he has a couple of beers before heading back. The boredom is awful, but not as bad as combat he reminds himself.

Sam is in his favorite spot on the island watching ships in the harbor docking and beginning to unload. The scuttlebutt is that part of the division will be embarking for some other garden spot. He still has heard nothing solid so he just sits there watching, playing with Frankie. He looks up to see some planes flying by and notices that the clouds are moving in and they're dark. He sighs and gets up to head back to his squad wondering if he'll beat the rain. When he does get back to his area he looks like a drowned rat and as Frankie shakes himself off the water sprays a couple of the guys in the tent who let out with a “HEY!”

The first open session of the International Military War Crimes Tribunal indicted 21 top Nazis.

In the middle of the night Padang was awakened by a nuisance raid made by 3 Helens who bombed the jungle and left.

Pontianak had it's port struck by 18 X Liberator VI and as a result a secondary explosion was triggered and the CA Haguro was hit by 3 bombs which added even more damage to the already mangled ship. 28 X Mosquito FB.VI attacked in the afternoon and the ships in the harbor suffered for it.
CA Haguro 6 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK Shinki Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
AK Momoha Maru 1 bomb hit, heavy damage
AK Toyooka Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage

Balikpapan was subjected to an attack made by 27 X B-24J and 51 X P-38J who inflicted moderate damage on the airstrip, a secondary explosion was observed, an Ida was trashed and personnel losses were very light. In the late morning 11 X PB4Y (1 damaged) and 4 X Kittyhawk II added extremely light airfield damage and negligible casualties.

At Naha the IJA 47th Division was hammered by 16 X B-24D and 50 X B-24J for moderate casualties. The IJA 53rd Ind. Mixed Brigade was jumped by 29 X B-25J who hit the unit for extremely light losses in return for the loss of a Mitchell and 5 more damaged.

Palembang was targeted by 16 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged), 9 X Thunderbolt II and 9 X Spitfire VIII and that resulted in light damage to the port and a couple of secondary explosions.

Malang had a Frank up when 32 X SB2C (2 damaged), 24 X TBF (4 damaged), 52 X TBM (3 damaged), 27 X F6F, 15 X FM-2 and 16 X F4F-4 arrived on the scene. The Frank was immediately splashed, the airstrip was very lightly damaged, the port was lightly damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were claimed and troop losses were moderately heavy. The Japanese artillery caused very light casualties for the Allied troops and the Allied barrages resulted in very light losses for the Japanese. At Kweiyang the Chinese artillery inflicted moderate casualties on the Japanese.

The DE Cecil J. Doyle is fighting for her life 152 miles NW of Darwin only able to make about 3 knots with heavy systems damage and very bad flooding. If the pumps fail then the ship will be lost.

When informed that the Japanese have moved units into Harbin before his forces can get there and that other units continue to plan for attacks on Soviet bases Stalin orders a cable immediately be sent to Tokyo protesting these acts. “I don't care what the Japanese do or don't do we attack as soon as our troops arrive at their designated objectives.”

Targets have been discussed and approved for the A bomb. Harry stands by his decision. In the meantime London has contacted Washington and want the US not to bomb Hong Kong, Shanghai, etc. The reply pointed out that the RAF has been pounding Bangkok. Truman said that he expected problems with London, but that the war effort will not be hindered by such petty things.

Jim's outfit has nothing to do until some new base needs work done so they continue to make all sorts of stuff to sell and trade with line units. Jim bagged a Japanese flag today and another guy in the unit is in possession of a dead Japanese officer's sword. Who goes to war with a sword in today's world, Jim wonders.

“So the Japanese moved multiple divisions into Harbin by their own admission? Our planes have been released to attack Harbin. We are now at war with Japan. Send them a cable informing them of this fact. Tell our American Allies that they may launch any kind of operation that they please from our bases that they are using.” Stalin then proceeds to toast to a glorious victory.

Truman asks if the Soviet attacking the Japanese would ease pressures on the Chinese and General Marshall said, “The Japanese could pull thousands of troops out of China and the Chinese would remain on their backsides screaming for more weapons and supplies.”

Jay and Al were taking a stroll and went by the airfield. There is a new fence that keeps you at a greater distance than before. Al grins and produces a pair of binoculars. It isn't long before the MPs show up and Al gave it right back to them when they started in on them. “If you don't want us here why isn't the fence out from the base some more? Besides I'd love to leave Formosa. Hey, I'll bet both of you haven't come within miles of any Japanese that are still carrying weapons. Want to trade jobs? I bet not.” He then turned to Jay and said, “Let's go before these clowns get themselves in trouble.” With that the MPs got aggressive and the two soldiers gave them a beating that will not be forgotten. Jay and Al know that they're in hot water now and they figure that by tonight the fit will hit the shan.

Combat

Butung Island was occupied by the Allies.

The Japanese coastal guns at Malang were busy firing on the unloading ships and the troops landing took heavy casualties. An air raid was made by 54 X TBM (2 downed, 8 damaged), 15 X FM-2 and 16 X F4F-4. 2 Franks and a Tony were able to intercept the Allied planes and they lost a Frank before running. There were a couple of secondary explosions seen and personnel losses were moderate. Almost immediately after that attack 25 X SB2C (7 damaged), 19 X TBF (3 damaged), 1 X TBM and 19 X F6F arrived and they caused light port damage, negligible airstrip damage, a Tony and a Frank were burning on the ground and casualties were heavy. The Japanese artillery inflicted negligible losses on the Allied troops and the Allied barrages caused moderate Japanese casualties.

Padang was raided by 6 Helens at 3 AM, the jungle was bombed.

Near Mersing the SS Entemedor attacked a lone AK just before sunup. The deck gun scored 5 hits and 2 torpedoes slammed home. The ship was heavily damaged and burning and eventually went under.

Mutanchiang was swept by 13 Mustangs, but no Japanese planes were found.

Hong Kong was raided by Allied planes for light airfield damage and a secondary explosion. A Mitchell and an Invader were damaged by the AA fire.

Bangkok was bombed by 99 X Liberator VI (12 damaged) for very heavy port damage, a very large number of secondary explosions were claimed and personnel losses were very heavy.

Pontianak's port was struck by 19 X Liberator VI. A secondary explosion was triggered and ships at anchor were hit.
CA Haguro 8 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
DD Yuzuki 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
AK Joshu Go 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
A few hours later 26 X Mosquito FB.VI arrived and added light damage to the port, a couple of secondary explosions and 4 bomb hits were made on the battered CA Haguro, which continues to burn but stubbornly refuses to die.

At Harbin the IJA 1st Division was attacked by 137 X B-29 (1 downed, 10 damaged) and 18 X P-51D. The unit had very heavy casualties. The IJA 24th Division was pounced on by 55 X P-63A (7 damaged) for light losses. The IJA 23rd Division had moderate casualties from 14 X B-29 (4 damaged) and 3 X P-51D.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division absorbed moderate losses from an air raid.

Wakkanai was struck by 32 X B-25J (1 damaged), 6 X A-26B (1 damaged) and 7 X P-38J for very light damage to the airstrip. The 3 Franks on patrol vacated the area.

Shanghai was raided by 88 X B-25J (7 damaged) for extremely heavy port damage, some secondary explosions were seen, troop losses were negligible and the MLE Shinfuku Maru was hit by 2 bombs causing it to break up and go down.

Tavoy was visited by 35 X Mosquito FB.VI (3 damaged) and 11 X Thunderbolt II who caused very light airfield damage, a few secondary explosions and extremely light casualties.

Palembang was attacked by 14 X Mosquito FB.VI (4 damaged), 8 X Thunderbolt II and 9 X Spitfire VIII who accounted for light port damage.

Near Ominato 48 X B-25J, 9 X A-26B and 55 X P-38J arrived and they splashed the 2 Rufes that were up. An AP was struck by 9 bombs for heavy damage and raging fires, which caused it to sink.

At Kweiyang the Chinese artillery hit the Japanese for heavy losses.

Bill looks out at the anchorage at Ulithi and wonders if his ship will ever have orders to leave there, or if her needed repairs will ever be made. It's gotten to the point where he's itching to sail with or without the repairs being done. Bill has become increasingly irritable and even letters from Sandy don't help much. He tries to keep it inside so as not to upset his crew.

Stalin expects the assault on Linhsi scheduled for dawn tomorrow to evict the Japanese troops with ease. This will expose the Japanese flank and how they respond will not save them, he thinks.

Jay and Al caught holy hell last night. They were pulled in from of the battalion's CO who read them the riot act. Al sheepishly asked what was wrong with being on the proper side of the fence and he was told that wasn't the problem. “The problem is that the two of you thrashed those MPs.” Al answered that the MPs started it and that Jay and he acted in self defense. Now they have KP duty and are sitting there peeling potatoes with a cook telling them that if they worked any slower they'd be mistaken for statues. Jay whispered to Al not to say anything as guys in the kitchen are always people to stay on the good side of.

The German U-boat pens in Hamburg were destroyed today by British engineers using German explosives.

In the meantime I want the crews to get as much liberty as possible while the ships are looked after. I want both men and machines in tip top condition and ready to go when the time comes. Thank you gentlemen.” With that the officers leave the meeting and Ed lets his mind drift to other things. He wonders how Bill is doing aboard the Missouri. Of course the crew and ship are lucky to have him as the skipper based on Bill's record of command and what Ed knows from a personal level.

The Palawan's convoy will get underway late tonight. The pool is large as everybody aboard is in it, including Lucky. Some of the crew are already bemoaning the fact that the dog is in it, but when Cookie reminds them that the dog brings luck to their ship the grumbling stops and somebody said, “It's Red who brings us the luck too.”

Ed sits in his office, tilted back, staring at the ceiling. He's wondering if Thunder will bring Japan to it's knees and if he has covered all of his bases or is there something he's forgotten. He's decided that when the war ends he's going to resign his commission and retire from the Navy. He's tired and feels that the younger up and comers, such as Bill, are ready to take over. He hopes that there isn't a next war, but believes that it's always lurking just around the corner if you let your guard down.

Bangkok was struck by 113 X Liberator VI (23 damaged) for extremely heavy port damage, a huge number of secondary explosions were observed and casualties were placed at heavy.

Balikpapan was hit by Allied planes for light damage to the airstrip and moderate troop losses. 3 B-24Js were damaged in the attack.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division absorbed moderate casualties from an air strike.

The Japanese PC 167 miles N of Tori Shima was attacked by 6 X PB4Y and 28 X P-38J who failed to harm the craft, but did give it a good shower with some misses.

Sapporo was attacked by 74 X B-25J (1 downed, 5 damaged), 9 X A-26B (1 damaged) and 89 X P-38J which resulted in moderate airfield damage, a secondary explosion, 2 Graces and a Frances were destroyed and personnel losses were heavy.

The Allied artillery inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese defenders.

83 miles NW of Padang 9 X Peggy tried to penetrate the CAP of 4 X Hellcat II and 33 X Corsair IV in a vain effort to get to the ships. All of the Peggys were splashed as a Hellcat and 2 Corsairs were damaged.

At Kweiyang the Chinese artillery caused heavy Japanese casualties.

77 miles N of Teloekbetoeng an Allied attack over the river produced moderately heavy Japanese losses and heavy casualties for the Allies.

The Lucky 11 have just learned that they are scheduled to hit Hiroshima tomorrow. Nobody is happy about the target as they'll have to fly over Japan for a while to get there. This puts them at risk for an extended amount of time concerning the possibility of being intercepted by Japanese fighters. “I tell ya those Shindens and Reppus are scary,” says Donny. Their bomb group has managed to be credited with downing some planes, but the Lucky 11 sit on a goose egg. Donny is questioned about this and he says, “We gunners on Jake's Jalopy are so good the Japs are afraid to get close.” Gil says that great by him.

Cookie teases the crewmen about nobody knowing where they are bound yet. “You might as well give your money to the dog as you all know he's Lucky.” This brings some chuckles and comments ranging from “It would figure the dog would win in this crazy world” to “I'm already figuring out what I'm going to do with all that money.”

Sam is playing with Frankie in their favorite spot when suddenly an explosion rocks the area. A plane had a mishap and is now a burning pile of junk. Sam wonders if the pilot suffered and shakes his head to clear those thoughts from it. This is a war and people get hurt, badly, both mentally and physically. Soon he'll get out of here and the Army will ship him off to another battle.

Slim has his lads back at a range, reminding them that all Marines are riflemen first and foremost. A new lad asks Slim during their march back to camp what it's like fighting the Japs and Slim tells him that they are tough soldiers and that they should always be respected. “If you remember your training, listen to the vets and don't get stupid you'll be just fine,” he told the lad.

Sandy got 4 letters from Bill today and after reading them she prepared dinner. A short time later Dave came home and during the meal they discussed the future. He told her that Bill is already married to the Navy and that if they end up getting married, as she'd like, then she'll be home alone for extended periods of time. “Even when you're together the Navy will be moving him around and you'll either have to follow or not. It won't be an easy or normal life until he finally retires from the Navy.” Sandy quietly ponders this.

Sam is frustrated by the fact that half of the division has been loaded onto ships for transport away from here and he's not one of them. He does take comfort knowing that more ships are on the way and whatever is going to happen the division will reform before shipping out to rejoin the war.

Phil stares at the orders and smiles. He's just been transferred and is effective 1 November, 1945 commander of DesRon 12. He scrambles to make travel arrangements to get to Ulithi and then luckily is on a flight that will get him there with time to spare.

Knowing where they are heading the pot is now Lucky's. Everyone is laughing about it and asking how many steaks it'll buy for the hungry beast. The men are also concerned and are hiding their fears as Palawan is sailing ever closer to where the war is hot.

Japanese artillery made lots of noise and did no harm. The Allied artillery inflicted moderate losses on the Japanese. Japanese transports were intercepted by Allied fighters.

At Kweiyang the Chinese artillery caused moderate Japanese losses.

Chris wearily got out of his cockpit for the third time today. He now has bagged 14 Japanese planes, but all he wants is some food, a shower and sleep. He heard lots of chatter over the radio and wonders how he could do in his Hellcat against those new, hot Japanese fighters that were seen in limited numbers today. The Corsairs did OK, but the Hellcats seemed to have troubles with them. He also heard about a raid that was bounced by the Japanese and no fighters were there to protect them.

Due to the extremely heavy air losses the USN has ordered it fleet to withdraw so that they may replenish and join in Operation Thunder, which will be getting started shortly.

As Operation Thunder enters a new phase Ed's Old Gals set sail to bombard Naha.

A CAP was up of 6 X Nick and 15 X Frank when 186 X B-29 and 71 X P-51D showed up. The Japanese fighters tried to get at the bombers, but the Mustangs splashed all of them except for 2 lucky Franks. 3 Mustangs were lost in the fight and another was damaged. At Malang both sides traded artillery barrages with the Japanese taking moderate casualties and the Allies having light losses.

At Harbin the Japanese artillery inflicted light losses on the Russians who replied with their big guns dishing out very heavy casualties to the Japanese .

At Chihfeng the Russian assault took the base as the Japanese defenders were swept aside. The Japanese had moderately heavy losses and the Soviets took moderate casualties. The Japanese retreated towards Jehol.

Recon flights off of the Japanese coast report that there were sinking ships from yesterday's air attacks.

Stalin looks over the reports and orders some vodka to celebrate the victory over the Japanese. Some of the officers stare at one another and nod knowing that the Japanese force evicted from Chihfeng was simply overpowered by a hugely superior force. They wonder what's going to happen if the defenses at Harbin don't crumble soon.

Sam is sitting under a tree overlooking the airfield, like he usually does. The difference is that this time he's crying as he says, “They left us here. They just up anchored and left.” Frankie sits looking at Sam and licks at the tears running down his cheeks. A quick glance would confirm that there are no ships at Tori Shima today and Sam had held hopes of leaving this island finally

Jay and Al have escaped from KP duties and Jay tells Al again that they don't need any more trouble. “Hell, with the war and all the last thing we need is you getting creative and landing us in any more hot water.” No sooner has Jay stopped talking than Al breaks out in a big grin and produces a few cans of peaches. Jay rolls his eyes and suggests that they hurry back to their area and share the spoils with the rest of the squad.

Then another wave of bombers, 78 X B-29, arrived a short time later and the Zeke stayed away as the flak damaged 1 big silver bird. This attack was also on the Nakajima engine plant. A third strike of 38 X B-29 came on and the Zeke watched them from a afar and the ground fire was ineffective this time around. Overall the Nakajima engine plant was heavily damaged.

At Malang both sides traded artillery barrages with the Japanese having moderate losses and the Allies took light casualties. Japanese transport planes were intercepted by Allied fighters.

The artillery exchanges at Harbin saw the Soviets taking very light losses and the Japanese had extremely heavy casualties.

77 miles N of Teloekbetoeng the Japanese artillery did no harm despite their best efforts. Then the Allied troops attacked, forcing the Japanese to retreat towards Palembang. The Japanese had very heavy losses and the Allied troops took moderate casualties.

“I can't believe it. The dog really is lucky. What's the beast going to spend his money on?” Those were some of the comments as the convoy split up and the Palawan plods on to Lucky's pick in the pool. Cookie suggests that the dog will probably give his money to Red for investment after buying something special for his 4 legged friend.

Stalin is angry. “Where did the Japanese learn that we were going to attack? How did they move 250,000 men into Harbin before were could get there? I was told that their pullback gave us the advantage and that taking Harbin would be easy.” A general is quietly escorted from the room by a pair of security men. A brave colonel speaks up and says that with a little luck Harbin can be turned into Japan's Stalingrad. Stalin asks the man to expand on his thoughts.

Slim is listening to the snow job being shoveled at the meeting as he rubs his stacking swivel. The tension is unbearable, but now he knows that the 2nd Marine Division will not be a part of Operation Thunder. They will be the tip of the spear for an Operation called Lightning. Eventually they'll get the dope on that, probably when they're en route and not before because of security concerns. Like he or the lads would even have a chance of talking to somebody that could leak word of what they were up to.

Sam stares at the planes flying in an out of Tori Shima and decides that being a pilot, though not without risk, is better than being a foot soldier. When he returns to his squad a debate begins about who is better off. “The Navy has great chow,” says one of the guys and another says that when a ship gets hit you have to survive that just to get into the water and then you need to survive that too. “Pilots have it easy as they always get to sleep in a decent place,” says somebody else. Then the argument about getting shot down begins as making it to the ground is only part of surviving. “What if you're behind enemy lines or over water when you go down?” asks someone else. “I should've been in tanks,” says yet another of the guys and they agree that the Japs aren't to good at killing the Army's armor as long as the infantry is around to protect them. Sam finally says that despite it all he'd rather be a civilian, having a cold beer and sleeping in a clean, dry place all of the time. They all nod at that and the conversation turns to when they'll get off of Tori Shima.

Then 3 X A-26B attacked an AK, hitting it with a bomb for heavy damage and fires. Just over the horizon 14 X B-25J and 2 X P-38J attacked a pair of AKs, failing to hit either of the previously damaged vessels. A PB2Y spotted and AK and claimed a hit that killed the ship.

41 miles E of Kadina 11 X PB4Y and 5 X P-51D attacked the IJN warships, but didn't score any hits.

252 miles NW of Tori Shima 13 X Betty tried to penetrate the CAP over the American fleet. 638 X F6F and 118 F4U-1D made short work of them and 3 Hellcats were damaged. At almost the same time 12 X Grace made an attempt on a different axis of attack on to be thwarted by the CAP. All of the Japanese planes were splashed. Within a few minutes another raid made up of 13 X Grace and 12 X Betty valiantly tried for the American warships. The CAP shot down all of the Graces and 8 of the Bettys in return for 4 damaged Hellcats. Then the Japanese threw 6 X Grace at the fleet only to lose all of them for no return. Later 8 X Judy tried and died. Just before sundown 11 X Betty made a half hearted attempt and lost 2 planes as they ran when intercepted. A Hellcat was damaged.

The extent of Ed's injuries aren't fully known, but he is now drifting in and out of consciousness. Once they reach port he will be transferred to a proper medical facility.

The AK Empire Gambia was scuttled and her crew rowed to the nearby Pagai Island to await pickup. The captain of the ship hasn't been seen since the men took to the boats.

Reports of sinking Japanese ships flowed in throughout the day from patrol aircraft.

Bill can't believe it as the Navy finally remembered that his ship and the New Jersey have been rusting away and now they have sailing orders. Later Bill heard about the battle between the IJN and Ed's ships and he hopes that Ed is OK after hearing that the Maryland, his flagship, was hit hard. He tried to find out more, but there is nothing available at the present time and he has much to do before the Mighty Mo departs. He makes a point of passing the word about getting mail ashore before they sail. He has no time to write to Sandy, but that'll keep.

British intelligence reported that Hitler probably committed suicide on April 30th after marrying Eva Braun.

Ed is carefully carried from the Maryland to a shore hospital at Takao. The extent of his injuries won't be fully known until later today. He is slipping in and out of consciousness and he asks about his men and his ships.

The Mighty Mo and the New Jersey along with their escorts steam on a NNW heading. Nothing in the orders alluded to anything other than relocating the ships to Takao. Bill knows that it's wrong to assume, but everything points to operations where the fast BBs will either be screening the CVs or that a battle fleet is being assembled to deal with the newly aggressive IJN. One or the other, Bill doesn't care as he expected to be called on because things are practically on Japan's doorstep and if the Japanese don't fight now they never will.

Elaine sets the letter from Gil aside and wonders if he'll ever come back. It seems so long since they last saw each other. Tonight she's going out with some friends and her sister. She needs to get out of the house and have some fun.
