I am trying to install TOAW III on my new windows 8 computer. It does not seem to run properly, with all kinds of different problems. Is TOAW III compatible with windows 8?

I just bought an HP touch screen with Winblow$ 8 last week. Did a simple install and it runs just fine. Different machines will get different results I am sure.

@Petey: Have you patched the install on your Win8 machine to 3.4?

Installed the 3.4 patch and I can say the game runs. There are still several issues. Goes into a "not responding" mode from time to time. Also there is no dialogue box after the results of each battle. Is that a 3.4 change or is there a switch I need to change?

There are switches, but purely for scenario debugging and the lot. What about compatibility mode in Wind00f 8? Try starting the alternative .EXE files, e.g. for the Athlon. Could be also a video driver issue...

I run the game in Windows 8 and after install 3.4 patch the game runs fine (although it is true that every once in a while the game Goes into a "not responding" mode, then returns to normality)

To see the dialogue box after the results of each battle, like Telumar says, you must enable it in the options menu.

My wife's laptop came with 8. Installed 7 on it after a couple of frustrating days. 8 works okay only with some kind of touch screen. 8 killed PC sales.

I get the 'not responding' thing too but I think it has to do with the operating system thinking it's not responding because it's taking longer than the op system thinks it should to do things. It's actually working. Just give it time. I get more 'not responding' messages with other programs I use on 8. Just ignore it and wait.

Thanks everyone for the Win 8 advice.

I've been working with PCs (Windows and Macs) for 35 years. Never in my life have I been as confused as with Win 8. i'm debating if I should take my new new Win 8 laptop back and buy a new Mac.

Stick to Win7, it's working more than fine. As for tablet and games... a no go. ;) Only 'cartoon wargames' work for those thingies ;)

P.S. If you need a tutorial, etc, have a look at the Gefechtsstand - http://gefechtsstand.wordpress.com/2011/07/15/toaw-tutorial-2/

Like Klink said, Win7. Win8.1 is supposed to make the current Win8 more 'friendly'. Then there's Linux and a few other OS to go to also. I'd chew my arm off before I spent money on an overpriced Apple anything. Talk about inflated ego/prices. And again, touchscreens.

Another candidate for a Kharkov '43 beta-test perhaps?

I'm struggling with Windows 8 now...

Bill Gates is a bad man. It's the only explanation.

My deepest sympathy..

Though, if you manage to shut down that Metro crap it's just like Win7.

Exactly so. I'm using Windows 8 no problems. I installed this:

http://classicshell.net/

Start button is back. It's pretty much like Windows 7 and the only thing I go to the ridiculously-big-buttons-bit for is Netflix.

I concur - we did this at work for the 'needed' Win8 boxes, and they're running like champs. Even worked for the Father-n-Law's new touch-screenie all-n-one... (and, cut down on the tech-support calls....<whew>)

Once you get Aero off, and tweak it (make it run with Preformace in mind, and adjust its pagefile) its pretty close to Win7.

I got around to installing and opening up TOAW on Windows 8.

So far, the only thing I've noticed is that the graphics that are supposed to be produced by beginning the place name with '<3', '<4>' don't appear.

Have others noticed this?
