So last night I am sitting watching Netflix and The Final Countdown is listed as an option. The wife has gone to bed, so I think, why not? It has been a long time since I had seen it (about 30 years) and I thought the premise kind of neat - what happens if a modern carrier was hurled back in time and could stop the Japanese assault on Pearl Harbor.

Well, thirty years on I can now say that movie was a waste of an hour and a half. It must have been made as an advertisement for the US Navy.

That was the only redeeming value - some really cool shots of the Nimitz, F-14 Tomcats on CAP, A-7's, -6's, and Hawkeyes. I enjoyed seeing these jets in flight. Cool stuff!

Otherwise, it seemed a quick production, fill it with some big names of the time (Douglas, Sheen, Durning), and take a neat concept and spread it across an hour ++. In hindsight, I wish the storm hadn't returned so quickly to take them to their proper timeline. It would have been cool to see the six Japanese carriers try to last against a modern day carrier.

Yeah, it seemed so anti climatic...
Even if they didn't want to animate the battle, at least leave the Nimitz behind in WWII and let us see a present day USA where the Nimitz became an important part of the USN in WWII... Nuclear powered everything and a swift defeat of the Imperial Japanese Navy and the world in peace
Great premise, poor implementation.

Would make for a decent remake though with more modern special effects.

They could expand on the time-travel scenario though - what if they did alter history and intervened...

They use the Nimitz and its air power to win the War in 1942. No Manhattan Project. No atomic bomb. No reactor development. No Nimitz.

PARADOX!!!

reverse engineering the reactor seems like it would be a deadly task...

Yes but even though there was no need for an atomic bomb, the science was still being investigated and with the Nimitz came about 5,000 people, some of which are very knowledgeable about nuclear reactors and how to build them.

PARADOX but I think the 'new' future would see advances faster for the US that most other nations would struggle to keep up. Even the Cold War would have been not so cold, if it happened at all.

The Axis of time books by John Birmingham have a similar concept: a multinational force centered on a US CVN is taken back in time in the middle of Midway battle and they stay there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis_of_Time

Why not recreate the battle in Command? Instead of Japanese carriers, use, for example, HMS Illustrious and others, put some Me-109s there and voila, you have a WW2 carrier fleet. Altough not...very realistic :-) And be prepared for some hilarity (at least in build 486), like 8 Phoenix missiles deciding on their own to target just one Me-109...and all of them missing. Also, going in for guns with swarm of 109s, not a good idea either. Pointless battle but I could not resist once finding there are some rather old machines in the CWDB :-)

Paradox!

Imagine you were Rear Admiral (he skipped a rank to take over CentPac)Chester W Nimitz, chief of the Bureau of Navigation and a super ship bearing your name comes through time! Priceless

There was also an AAR a couple weeks ago by 'abc3' http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3576649 that covered the topic.
