Anyone with any interest in cold war submarine operations really, really should watch this (two-part) BBC series. Interviews with British, US and ex-Soviet submariners, lots of information that was new to me, well told and some good footage and reconstructions. Oh, and great music!

This was part of a larger series of cold war programmes - all highly recommended.

Part two is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IK7nPMcD-DA

It includes (amongst other things) the explosion on the K-219 (I recommend the book on that incident - Hostile Waters) and the famous Victor III sortie of 1987.

Really fascinating stuff.

Many thanks for the pointer.

It is indeed a very well done series.

A bit simplistic in context (e.g. I didn't see any reference to the Walker & Toshiba/Kongsberg affairs and their effects, although I skimmed through most of the narrative so I may have missed them) but nice media content and some good details.

And this photo...

...if true, should be the most awesome photograph taken in 1977.

I learned from it that Walker saved the world by keeping the 2 parties in balance ;)

And that the Typhoon-crew lived in better conditions in their sub than on land...
