I've agreed to play a stock Scenario 2 with non-historic Dec. 7th GC as the Allies against Andre. We're using the last official patch and HR's are minimal. I may be regressing by going back to a stock scenario with no stacking limits, but Andre does not play any mods or betas. I wanted to give him a game and a chance to play as the Allies and these were his conditions.

I consider myself a mediocre Allied player. I had been playing another PBEM as the Allies which reached late 1943, but the game ended abruptly after a complete lack of contact from my opponent. For what it was worth, I was having my ass handed to me. I fully expect a repeat performance until my head wraps around the differences in playing the Allies. I feel completely outside my comfort zone.

From what I've gathered about Andre's style and many comments over the years on the forum, I believe I'm going to be in for one hell of a fight and will be hardpressed to stave off Auto-victory. I will do my best to offer a competitive game.

This matchup is all about letting go and just playing for me. I know what to expect with stock, warts and all, and that's fine. I'm going up against one of the forum's finest. I just want to have fun and hopefully surprise Andre a few times along the way. I wish those that follow will enjoy the matchup.

Poultrylad has run the first turn and sent the replay, but I prefer to wait until I have the Japanese turn in hand before watching. As soon as I get the next turn we'll be off and running.

Stock and no mods, etc., but....are you using the updated scenario data files?

Well, that was an interesting start. Andre focuses on annihilating the U.S. Submarine Fleet at Manila with KB and LBA. Of 27 submarines in port, 26 are sunk outright with the sole remaining heavily damaged submarine to succumb tomorrow. Numerous port strikes throughout Southeast Asia and the Philippines take their toll on merchant shipping as well. All told, 67 ships are sunk on the first day. Someone's obviously sandboxed this start to perfection. To add insult to injury the lone enemy midget submarine attack at Pearl Harbor hits the BB West Virginia. She's out of commision for 72 days.

On a positive note, the U.S. Pacific Fleet is completely intact . I also have far fewer TF's to create for my second turn.

I'm no expert at discerning an opponent's intentions, but I'll give it a shot here. The fact that the focus was on Manila and the commitment of KB tells me securing the DEI is THE priority. I fully expect a follow up move against India or Australia in a bid to gain Auto-victory. My bet is on India. I will plan for both though and reinforce as quickly as possible. I will secure Karachi, Bombay, Melbourne and Sydney first to ensure I'm prepared if Andre makes a deep penetration rather than try and simply push my forces back. To that end, I will not commit heavily to defending the Burma/India border and risk a massive encirclement resulting from an early enemy amphibious operation against Calcutta and area.

I'll try and make hay where I can, but I will not risk moving too quickly in the Southeast, Central or North Pacific. I learned from my last Allied PBEM against an extremely talented and aggressive Japanese player that it's far too easy for Japan to shift focus and isolate/wipe out any Allied lodgement in the Aleutians or Southeast Pacific without the necessary logistic capacity to sustain these positions over the first 6 months. The extra troops available to Japan in Scenario 2 also makes it extremely difficult to counter a quick expansion.

I have a reputation for conservative play, but I hope to lull Andre into a false sense of security if possible. I need to be aggressive and choose my battles, but in a non-suicidal way! I'm sure he's intent on trying to prevent me being able to dictate anything and keep me on the ropes until that final knockout blow.

So it begins...

For the Animal House afficionados out there. Stay calm, all is well!

Ah, yes, surely not having to create all of those single-ship TFs fleeing Manila like cockroaches is the silver lining in this cloud.

Cheers,

I'm still working through the second turn orders, but finished up a number of mundane tasks today. Pilot training and air unit redeployment is complete. The merchant marine has been reorganized and individual ships and TF's are en route to their new home ports. Australia's forces have been issued their marching orders and are taking up defensive positions throughout the country. Allied submarines have been ordered to return to port for new commander assignments. The Chinese are ordered to fall back to better defensive positions, not that it will matter but one goes through the motions. What remains?

Burma, Java, India, Philippines and Malaya have yet to be addressed. I will finish up the turn with orders for all the various naval forces in harm's way. I don't really need to do everything this turn, but I find it's worth getting as much set up and in motion from day one. I can then just tweak the mundane tasks and concentrate on combat operations moving forward.

I'm formulating an overall defensive plan to try and survive 1942. I'll attempt to throw in some roadblocks to slow the Japanese down in a few areas and see if I can take advantage of KB being off the Philippine coast. A benefit of not having Pearl Harbor attacked is the amount of PBY's available to scout out Japanese movements. Being able to gather more intelligence on Japanese dispositions will help me avoid blundering into trouble.

I will have the next turn off to Andre tonight.

I thought I'd mention that Force Z, CA Houston and CL Boise are intact. The two cruisers have been spotted near Jolo and are in danger of interdiction from CVL Ryujo and friends, while Force Z is undetected west of Pontianak. There is a Japanese SCTF led by CA Furutaka spotted 120 miles off the Borneo coast heading southeast towards Kuching. I am up in the air as to whether to continue withdrawing Force Z or try to intercept the Japanese TF. My first instinct is to strike back, but the prudent decision would be to withdraw. I'll think on it. As to Boise and Houston, I'll try and get them out of harms way. KB is too close and if I get caught in the Sulu Sea they'll be doomed.

I'll be following this one just to see the counters to an agressive Japanese player who focuses on the DEI.

Is there a counter to KB possibly heading into the DEI?

I decided on my immediate course of action. Force Z will retire to Batavia and await developments. Three separate Allied SCTF's consisting of the CA Houston, CL Boise and CL Marblehead with 5 DD's are looking for trouble in the Sulu Sea.

I'll try and set the tone right from the start.

Now that's an interesting trio. Boise is much more powerful than the WWI-era Marblehead. But one can never discount the effect of luck...

CL Boise is trying to slip behind a Japanese CVL TF to try and intercept what appears to be an amphibious TF heading for Ternate or Manado.

CA Houston in a single SCTF and CL Marblehead with the 5 DD's in another TF are trying to block the CVL TF from getting to shipping at Balikpapan.

Success is doubtful, but you never know with this game. If you get the rolls amazing things can happen.

Just last turn in one of my games, in clear conditions at night with 28% moonlight and sighting distance of 8,000 yards or so, 2 IJN DDs got sunk by my medium-size amphibious convoy consisting of BB Royal Sovereign, DE Jumna, PG Tulsa, and merchants. Despite sinking the 2 DDs, the BB took 2 torpedoes from the reloads. Then 4 TBs came in with sighting distance 2,000 yards and sank pretty much everything with precision torpedoes. I don't believe the TF was surprised in either case as I didn't see a Long Lance attack. Talk about amazing rolls!

Banzai! Banzai! Banzai!

The task force was unloading, if I remember correctly from the replay, which might have swung things firmly in my favour.

Still, not a bad show. It will be something for the crews to brag about as they spend the rest of the war hunting submarines.

Consider it a warning of the potency of the Long Lance!

On the tagent of battleships, any plans to redeploy the US Pacific Fleet elsewhere?

While hardly the stellar ships that the fast battleships are, they've got big cannons on them and are quite hard to sink. If I were you, I'd consider using them in areas with poor airstrips (so the IJNAAF can't get any torpedos to bear on you) or where you can get some decent air cover for them (read the Solomons).

I know a fair few players just bank them away for Central Pacific landings in 1943, but it seems a waste of a year that these ships could be used to harrass Japan.

It also presents a interesting strategic dillema to the Japanese player whenever a BB appears in a particular theater.

Do you:
- send carriers to sink it?
- send your own (limited) BB's to sink it, but possibly be damaged and knocked out of the war in return?
- risk heavy crusiers and hope for Long Lance hits?
- risk nothing, and hope that subs, land-based aircraft or Long Lances from destroyers take care of it for you.

CL Boise and CA Houston survive separate encounters with the screening SCTF for CVE Taiyo, I believe.

CL Boise takes a non-penetrating hit from CA Haguro , but lands a 5" in return before breaking contact. During the afternoon air phase she's hit with a 250kg bomb from a Kate from CVE Taiyo. Light system damage of 11 is sustained on the day. The enemy TF's are one hex southwest of Boise near Sorong so there will be another fight tomorrow as she tries to make her way to Timor. KB is well north still off the coast of the Philippines, but moving south.

CA Houston also runs into the CA Haguro and lands an 8" shell, but takes a 12.7 cm before retiring near Ambon.

CL Marblehead and company arrive and depart their patrol zone before a small enemy SCTF of three ships can be intercepted. It's a good thing because CVL Ryujo would have been able to get a launch in. Instead the only ship targeted is a Dutch tanker fleeing Tarakan and is sunk.

Force Z reached Batavia safely and is heading for Soerabaja. There's only a small window of opportunity to do anything until KB arrives. It may be best just to retire to Ceylon or head to Cape Town.

The cruisers did what they could, but ultimately were unable to interdict the enemy CVL. Boise still has a chance for glory, but is also still at risk of being sunk. it will be a coup if I can get her home.

Fun times and I actually like this period of cat and mouse. Oh, and mind_messing, I'll answer your post soon.

Right now the old BB's will remain at Pearl. They will upgrade over time and will not move out until my ASW capabilities improve. I have a healthy respect for Japanese submarines and the BB's are torpedo magnets. I think the long term benefit the BB's can provide should not be put at risk for minor gains. When I feel they will have the most impact and can be protected they will move out, until then they stay at Pearl or redeploy back to the West Coast at some point.

Not much to report other than lot's of fleeing tankers sunk by Japanese submarines. SS S-39 did find CV Akagi off the Philippine coast but unfortunately hit with a dud.

I'm saving what I can and looking for ways of hitting back a little, but right now Andre has everything covered. He knows what to expect and has positioned his forces well to counter.

On another note, I'm going to take a break from the forum for a bit, but it will have no adverse affect on this PBEM. Emotions are high on my end right now dealing with another opponent dropping a game. I can't help but think what a waste of my time. From here on out I keep my mouth shut and simply play.

JWE has kindly responded to my post for assistance in understanding the combat report from the other game, but also laid it out he's not impressed with the negative comments I made regarding stacking limits or Babes related changes. He's right. I tend to forget that a lot of people have put their heart and soul into this game and their efforts to improve it. The last thing they want to hear is anyone bashing their baby and then asking for help. Guilty as charged. A humble apology to all concerned and those forum members I may have offended.

Force Z - What to do with this powerful, but limited force.

1) I tend to us her with some American warships added to be my SC TF that has ALL the Allied CV TF following her throughout most of '42. She can be a TT magnet and Prince of Wales high AA value helps protect my precious CVs.

2) Send her over to try to intercept the Rabaul invasion that is often covered by those 4 old CAs. Go through straits at Horn Island. If not here, then to get at a Japanese player who does a quick attempt to grab Port Moresby. Maybe get the American CVs over there for this.

I've lost track of KB. Last reported position was east of Mindanao. I suspect she's moved east towards Saipan or Truk, because Dutch air search has spotted nothing around Borneo or the Celebes. I've been getting great coverage from the Dutch so I don't think the Japanese CV's have slipped through. In light of this, POW and friends remain off the radar until I get a clear picture of where KB is.

A brief update.

Andre is moving fast. Manus, Morotai and Miri have been lost with Kuching likely falling next turn. Makin, Nauru and Ocean Islands have also been captured.

Allied moves have been little. I've gotten a crack at both CV Akagi and CA Myoko with SS S-39, but this submarine is snake bitten. A 'hit, but no explosion' on the CV and a 'torpedo failed to detonate' on the CA. Dutch boats are being deployed around Ambon, Kendari and Sorong.

All merchant shipping in the DEI with the range are withdrawing to Australia, Cape Town and Aden. The priority is to be able to lift reinforcements into various theatres as quickly as possible. American air units are already in transit from the East Coast to Cape Town. Some surface assets are withdrawing to safer waters while others are waiting in the wings out of current Japanese air search range looking for opportunities. The CV's are in Hawaii with the exception of CV Saratoga which is being deployed to escort air transport TF's to Australia. Most Commonwealth air units that can be re-deployed have been sent to Australia or India. I'm with Sir Hugh Dowding on this, the air battle over the SRA is over and I will not lose a single plane or pilot over a lost cause more than I need to. The real battles will be over Australia or India in a few months.

While KB is still out of range I'm trying to get reinforcements to both Hawaii, Palmyra and Christmas Islands while I can. I'm also sending forces to Lord Howe Island in anticipation of a Japanese move against New Caledonia and Fiji. I'll try and reinforce Alaska and the Aleutians, but it's all a question of PP's. India is being reinforced with the 18th British Division. My priority is get the logistics in place to be able to strike back effectively anywhere on the map.

A note on my Allied philosophy. I'm still a novice with this side and I have no clue how to provide a real monkey wrench early for Japan as the better Allied players often do. I got steamrolled in my only previous experience playing the Allies in a Scenario 2 PBEM where my opponent effectively divided the map in half capturing all of the Aleutians up to Cold Bay and taking New Caledonia, New Zealand, Fiji as far as Tahiti in the south. I was ambushed moving forces into Alaska and raids against Prince Rupert devastated my lift capacity. The extra troops Japan gets early makes any kind of forward defence extremely risky. With this in mind, I fully expect to get streamrolled early so I will not throw good money after bad. I will make preparations to stave off auto-victory, but in so doing will not fight too far forward against overwhelming strength unless absolutely necessary. I'd like to secure Alaska, the Line Islands, Australia, Lord How Island and India before I worry about any offensive moves. In my other game my opponent left me no option but to strike from the IO, where I launched a full scale offensive against Sumatra in late 1943 from Cape Town, Ceylon and Diego Garcia rather than advance across the Pacific as he had hoped. I will mount another such operation anywhere on the map if necessary, but that depends on what Andre leaves me to play with. My experience playing Japan showed me no matter how aggressive a Japanese player is, the Allies can only lose out if they play according to Japan's wishes. I don't plan on accommodating. I'll play my game and do my best to prevent an auto-victory. Other than knowing I have to protect high VP locations, avoid losing major naval assets and prevent Japan blanketing the map with air search capability, I really don't care what Andre does. Right now I have to wait and see just how aggressive Andre intends to be before I panic.
