Battle of Hawaji / September 22nd - 23rd 1942

Allied bombers and carriers hunted enemy transports in vicinity of Hawajian islands last turn.

The ships that were spotted mostly were merchant ships and we nailed few of them.

At Hilo the japanese forces were assaulted in both days and will soon wiped out for good.

As expected japanese troops moved into central plains near Changhsa. I'am shuffling troops into more optimal positions here.

The most intresting detail from last turn were actually an naval search report. (see pic)

I was actually after these ships last turn but they moved fast enough to get away. The screenshot indicated 4 x CV's but who knows.. trying to get better intel next turn.

It's bit like forgetting to turn off "Upgrade allowed" on SS Argonaut. Losing capability to carry mines, but getting supply and troop capacity.

Haha.. Good one but just make sure you check the withdraw schedules as well or it might cost quite a lot!

Well, that is a good example of how "not" to play the Japanese. He pretty much lost the war in one day. I can't see much use in invading Hawaii in Sept 42. Even if he took it and you both traded half of your carriers, he would have to commit the rest of his carriers to protecting his supply lanes and could do nothing else. And the Japanese need to keep pushing elsewhere in early 1943 or it is over.

As for carriers, I doubt he is lying about his losses. Going over the hits you scored and the aircraft he lost I would have to say he has most all of his carriers out of action. You are probably spotting cripples and many will sink before he gets them to a safe place. I think you can take your good carriers and just go after him. He is not going to be able to put up many aircraft to stop you. Either way, the war is totally lost for him. Without carriers the Allies can attack anywhere.

You know the old saying, "A fool and his money (carriers) are soon parted."

It definately is an huge gamble but I have to say that he actually would have bought a lot of time had this succeeded.

I would have had to shuffle a lot of troops for the counterstrike and naval losses would have been substantial.

Having said that I concur that september 1942 is not the best time to go sailing into Hawajian islands.

I have screwed so many times by the FOW in earlier games but lets hope that you are right.

That TF was heading towards Marshall Island but my opponent will soon find out that Kwaleijin is not safe since I can reach it via LBA.

Thus whatever is left is first heading most likely into Truk before he sends them towards Home Islands.

Definately would pursue him but don't have the firepower to sail through Marshalls. In the carrier encounter 3 allied carriers too hits and we lost quite a few planes as well.

I will hunt those ships sailing the southern route and see what is there... but as much I would love to cannot go near Marshalls. If I did I would be the biggest fool!

...and never heard that old saying but one must agree with that wisdom!

Battle of Hawaji / September 24th - 25th 1942

This marks the day that battle of Hawaji is all but over.

Quiet turn alltogether around the map. At Hilo the japanese troops continue their resistance but not expecting them to last more than few days.

Allied carriers spotted and sunk couple of merchants that were fleeing towards Marshall Islands.

Now it is time refit and repair the allied battleships involved in this battle.

The only important and intresting news is seen below. It seems my opponent exaggerated quite a lot when talking about about the damage levels to his carriers.

That TF described in previous post seems to be moving in good speed towards Truk at the moment.

A bit odd to see those squadrons when you look back at the reported hits...

CV Zuikaku, Bomb hits 3, heavy fires
CV Soryu, Bomb hits 7, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage
CV Akagi, Bomb hits 5, heavy fires, heavy damage
CVE Hosho, Bomb hits 7, heavy fires, heavy damage
CV Shokaku, Bomb hits 1
CV Shokaku, Bomb hits 2, on fire

...thus only CV Shokaku reported "small" fires but the rest of the reported carriers were hit pretty hard.

Intresting.. very intresting... Good stuff from that B17 squadron though.

Pacific September 25th - 26th 1942

The battle of Hawaji is now officially over. Only few escaping japanese ships are spotted and allied tf commanders are ordered to head to port for refit and repairs.

Japanese Alamo continues at Hilo and have to say the IJA troops are putting up brave resistance...

Ground combat at Hilo (183,111)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 25699 troops, 476 guns, 352 vehicles, Assault Value = 693

Defending force 7216 troops, 55 guns, 6 vehicles, Assault Value = 109

Allied adjusted assault: 366

Japanese adjusted defense: 28

Allied assault odds: 13 to 1

Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
576 casualties reported
Squads: 74 destroyed, 5 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 2 disabled
Guns lost 4 (2 destroyed, 2 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
131 casualties reported
Squads: 10 destroyed, 13 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Assaulting units:

Allied B-24D Liberator bombers visit and hit Johnston Island. This base is sure death trap to any japanese defenders occupying the atoll.

SS-O24 torpedoes TK Arima Maru #4 near Malacca. Nice to get some submarine action which have thus far been little disappointing.

In China things are slowly fallen in place for next round of ground battles...

No sign of those carriers spotted last turn. The good guess would be that these ships are almost at Truk.

Pacific September 27th - 30th 1942

The japanese troops were completely wiped out. Excellent and this little campaign means that we destroyed 4 IJA divisions. (2nd, 48th, 53rd and 16th)

Allied 4E bombers launched an strike againts Kwaleijin port but there were nothing valuable docked there.

Japanese tanker TK Gen'yo Maru was hit near Singkawang by SS Sealion.

There are reported invasion ongoing at Samlauki north of Darwin.

The sunken ship list has got few new names....

Pacific October 1st - 10th 1942

Quiet times around the map. I guess you could hear more shipyard sounds than anything.

I should have my main assets battle ready within week or two. However we did lose some quality pilots which needs to be sorted out.

Only some regular and non regular bombing runs to report.

Allied 4E continue to visit Johnston Island daily and allied bombers hit japanese near Hengchyan in central China.

IJA launches some bombers towards Changhsa but these planes are easily shot down.

I starting to really like AA power on the ships now. These numbers are way much better than stock. Remains to be seen whether they actually make a big diffrence.

The numbers you see on the ship displays don't help because they are only used to make that display. You could get them by having 100x 20mm on the ship, which as you know have quite poor range.

But... the good news is that they come from better ratings for things like 40mm, 5 inch, etc. and they do make quite a difference.

Appreciated and to be honest I'am not that aware of the finer details regarding DaBabes tweaks.

The lack of AA effectiviness was one of the things I had not so good feelings in the previous stock PBEM games.

Few words from the game as well. I'am doing a more proper update later... but my opponent is pretty consistent saying that the carrier fleet is down and under.

"Well, I got my one remaining carrier back to port, where hopefully she will remain safe and sound..."

...and "Well, I imagine it will update over time. Those were battleships...I still have a lot of them." ...when I stated that I had spotted some carriers sailing towards Truk.

Go figure... hard to say what the truth might be but ship losses have added extra IJN ships into the list...

IIRC it's been said that the sunk ships list can be a few months behind, but in my own games I have seen enemy ships confirmed sunk a YEAR after the fact, maybe even a little longer! So, you might have some time to wait.

...and even after a year you find yourself hitting that damn sunken carrier 3rd time...!

Yeah, that list can be quite funny! Allthough sometimes it seems to be quite accurate.

The horrific naval losses around Hawaji are becoming more obvious day by day. The ships sunk list is steadily still growing...

There really has not been much in terms of action around the map.

At Changhsa allied P40E fighters dance with Japanese Oscar fighters. The losses for both sides are mediocre.

The allied submarine fleet continue their uneffective campaign. Torpedoes are launched but 95% of them miss their targets.

Allied have been busy repairing, upgrading carriers, battleships, cruisers and destroyers.

A lot of this happening and we should have full battle fleet operational in few turns time.

Stay tuned... There is the saying "Quiet before the storm break loose..."

Well done on the Battle of Hawaii! Holy Davy Jones' locker, Batman!

That was pretty fortunate for you to have most of your fleet hanging out when he showed up. Let's hope the game remains interesting.

Cheers,

Oh... if I remember correctly you lost quite a few of empire ships in our previous encounter!

I will take up that offer once I actually figure out how to run the Japanese system

It will take time (How much depends on the level of freetime I have...) to learn the ropes though but suggestion noted and would have nothing againts it.

The first good news is that allied carrier fleet is 100% operational after the Hawaji enconter.

Thus meaning the main focus has been reparing and refitting ships.

First japanese troops have entered Changhsa but who knows this could be an feint operation here. Currently prepared for whichever it turns out to be.

Allied submarines have been launching torpedoes but failing to hit targets. It seems enemy is moving resources around in big convoys.

The second good news is that we went ahead and conducted the first allied amphibitious operation of the war. This resulted to the recapture of Johnston Island (pic)...

Ground combat at Johnston Island (164,112)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 3722 troops, 31 guns, 81 vehicles, Assault Value = 196

Defending force 3822 troops, 41 guns, 2 vehicles, Assault Value = 78

Allied adjusted assault: 48

Japanese adjusted defense: 5

Allied assault odds: 9 to 1 (fort level 0)

Allied forces CAPTURE Johnston Island !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender: leaders(-), disruption(-), preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+), fatigue(-)

Japanese ground losses:
2888 casualties reported
Squads: 126 destroyed, 9 disabled
Non Combat: 43 destroyed, 69 disabled
Engineers: 13 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 42 (42 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Vehicles lost 2 (2 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units destroyed 1

Allied ground losses:
724 casualties reported
Squads: 25 destroyed, 44 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 14 disabled
Engineers: 3 destroyed, 15 disabled

Assaulting units:
112th Cavalry Rgt /1
102nd Cmbt Engr Rgt /2
24th (Sep) Infantry Rgt /1
194th Tank Bn /1
4th FA Bn /1

Defending units:
Maizuru 1st SNLF
43rd Naval Guard Unit
2nd JNAF AF Unit

...the old US Battleships (Tennesee, Oklahoma, Nevada and Colorado) did good job bombarding the base.

All in all that was good atoll invasion despite not having the proper ship types yet. These landings were mostly done by xAP's...

Quick update so that you all know this game is up and running.

We have now reached mid december and things remain somewhat quiet around the map.

I have been busy hauling more troops into frontlines and upgrading stuff. Things are moving along as planned.

Allied submarines have failed to hit anything in past few weeks. We have had some juicy AK/TK targets but no dice.

In past few days we have seen increased activity at Changhsa. Japanese bombers are now conducting daily runs againts the city. Definately ground offensive coming up here...

Also just received few shiny CVE's which is very nice!

Oh and very happy that we pretty much have now secured Gilbert Island chain without even an fight! Nice.. very nice!

December 19th 1942 - January 1st 1943

In past week the map went through couple of things.

First the IJA bomber raids againts Changhsa increased and allied P40E's defending the city were defeated. Expecting this aircampaign to continue.

Secondly the allied landed troops at Makin Atoll. This base is now secured and soon fully operational for offensive purposes. No sign of japanese navy nor airforce here.

Third the allied submarne fleet continue to waste torpedoes around japanese home islands. It is not the lack of targets but poor performance of the subs and crews.

That sums it up for the past two weeks. We have also reached beginning of 1943's. Thus it is approriate to add few screenshots from the game...

It really depends on the week. We actually might do a turn a day.. or sometimes when schedules are right we might do 5-6 in an evening.

There are also times when we don't even hit a turn day pace..!

...but 1943 it is and quite happy about it.

Hah! ...you definately could say that. Allthough 1942's has it moments but it is mostly an grind for the allied player!

The tide turning and we will start the push towards Tokyo soon enough.

Just need the proper ships to get this show on the road big time.
