I recently purchased the whole series, and as a long time 4x space guy I'm loving most of it.

One aspect I couldn't figure out whats going on with is how to stop stations from auto upgrading to the "latest" model. I would use differently designed stations for different tasks. My homeworld station I crammed with labs, but I had no need for labs in front line areas so I redesigned a no lab but better armed station for those worlds.

Later I noticed my research was taking forever, and sure enough my home world station had "upgraded" to a no-labs station.

So I redesigned it, turned off autoupdate, and retrofit. All good, but then my front line stations became the "new" version with 60 labs

Now at this point in the game I was steam rolling everyone so I just gave up, but there has got to be a way of preventing that I'm unaware of.

The same to a lessor degree applies to ships. I want to have 2-3 different type of capital ships to retrofit to, but control on those seems better unless you do a empire wide auto-upgrade.

Basically what I'd love to have is a little check box that says "do not upgrade" unless its a manual retrofit.

the best way to do this is to use a LSP for your hW, and a MSP/SP for outer worlds. Just use different design types.

You could also use a "Starbase" design for your HW rather than a standard SP.

Thats what I started doing (I forgot about that as I won like 10 minutes later), I had a "medium" base that was really a large in function.

Still rather limiting though.

Look at the design screen.

Or at the design overview, there are 2 columes at the right side, one for auto/Manual desgin and the next are for Auto/manual retrofit.
You can click there to change it, no need to open the design.

I have learned to control all design upgrades manually, but go ahead and let most ships auto-refit. Only in times of war will I set the refits to manual too, simply cause the AI has a nasty habit of deciding your assualt fleet needs to refit right about the time I actually want to go invade something.

If you also go into the ships screen you can select vessels by type from the drop down menu at the top. The select either single ships/base or multiple selects using both ctrl click and shift click. Then use the refit button and you will have a drop down menu again for selecting exactly what design to refit the ship/base to.

This tends to be something I use a lot later on as I can quickly organize ships by size & fleet then only refit the ones I need.

In addition to what Canute says here, you can also set which ships are/are not auto-upgraded in the Policy.

You can do this on a ship by case, even for Private ships.

Bases tend to autoupgrade at colonies even with "Only Retrofit When Manually Ordered" on the different Designs.

See the check boxes in your Policy, this can prevent anything from auto upgrading.

Hmm I didn't know that the Policy settings overwrite the Design Retrofit behaviour.

Hi, in the policies under the section "Construction" there is a population dependent upgrade option, like for example:
build small starbase when reaching a population of 30M or more
build medium starbase when reaching a population of 500M or more
build large starbase when reaching a population of 3000M or more
The upgrade is not always done immediately when the amount of population is reached.

I have the complete "construction" section on suggest, but the game still puts starbases and defense stations into the planetary construction queue of my colonies.

You can increase the suggested Populations, but there is a limit;
Small - 1000M max
Medium - 5000M max
Large - 20000M max (few Worlds and races ever get close to 20B)

I also had to delete the Research Station designs to stop the Private sector building them all over the place even with the build settings at Manual.
