So in this situation how can I better defend myself?

1 - smaller AirTFs w/ AA escorts, all set to follow a lead TF at 0 hexes. 4 CV or 6 CVE in TF w/ 8 escorts each - CL, CLAA, DD & DE. A fast BB in each CV TF will soak up attack attempts.

2 - Layered CAP at low, med & high altitudes, rotate patrol altitude between sqns to reduce fatigue buildup. Always set CAP range to 0 & use droptanks to increase their time aloft.

3 - High Air skill for AirTF flagship commanders, high Nav skill for all other Carrier captains.

4 - frequent RTB for TFs to replenish sorties & AA ammo - after Dec '44, use ReplTFs w/ AEs to replenish ammo & sorties at sea.

5 - position TFs as far from enemy bases as practicable. Use LBA to recon and bomb enemy airfields that pose a threat.

Here is the full combat report, I'm not sure what you are looking for though.

Group patrol altitude is 20000 , scrambling fighters between 5000 and 22000.

For example for the fact that your CAP patrol alt was about 10k above the incoming naval strike and at the same time had to engage LBA attack which arrived significantly higher. That explains a lot. Besides what has been mentioned already this is a major factor.

CR alone still does not tell everything, but this is enough to answer your initial question. Yes, in this situation your loss figures seem quite plausable.

One TF attacked in the CR has 52 combat ships. What am I missing here? Was this an Escort TF?

I don´t think so. It might be an escort TF, but I doubt it. An attack shows all ships attacked in the hex, not neccesarily in the same TF.

As I already pointed out, we do not have any valuable information besides the few bits and pieces already discussed.

It's been RT years since I had more than one TF in a hex that was attacked, but I thought the CR would generate a new paragraph for each TF.

Even if I'm wrong (I probably am), there are no escorts. Sure, the attackers are going to hit the carriers, but ONE not-carrier in the whole hex? A BB? Not one destroyer that was targeted out of 51 carriers which were? Still smells very fishy.

Almost knavely-ish.

I know they don't. I'm doubting that no non-carriers were attacked and shown. One BB. If there had been normal ratios of carriers to escorts in the TF make-ups there should have been at least a couple of cruisers od DDs that the planes dropped on if the carriers attacked were 51 each. And if there were no escorts, if this hex was simply bursting with carriers and nothing else, then the results are even more explainable. No AA to drive off attackers, disrupt, make turn back. Especially the TBs.

This CR is yet another example of somebody torturing the engine into a distant corner, blindfolding it, putting it in oven mitts, then complaining it "doesn't work."

Jmalter has a good take. To make it simple, we have been doing everything we can to steer folks away from “monster” stacks, whether LCUs or TFs. The game code runs along a couple ‘decreasing value’ algorithms, depending on the particular combat algorithm of interest. It was just too easy for a player to make a “Godzilla” stack of something and go rampaging. So “Godzilla” stacks are discouraged as non-compos-mentos.

Won’t (can’t) say how, what, when, where, or why, but will testify that it IS. Out of scale “stacks” will give out of scale results. Period.

Lot of people will give info on details (take it with Mediterranean Sea Salt) but do give some consideration to the manual definitions of TF sizes. It wouldn’t be there unless it meant something.

95% of Allies CV/CVL/CVL/BB/CA and DDs are in this hex.

But they are put in different TFs. Dozens of of TFs, according to their speed. And each TF is well balanced with escort and carriers. And yes after one day battle most ships have consumed most of the AA ammo.

Couple hundred of combat ships together with a couple hundred of transports.

This is not a abuse of engine but a must move in the game.

Guess what will happen if you send a carrier fleet of only 1000ac to cover the amphibious operation, when Japanese are capable of sending 1300AC carriers planes strike wave and hundreds of LBA strike wave?

95% of Allies CV/CVL/CVL/BB/CA and DDs are in this hex [...] together with a couple hundred of transports.

This is not a abuse of engine but a must move in the game.

95% of Allied combat ships in the same hex is no abuse of engine?

Well, with so many ships in one hex there is probably no sea room left for evasive maneuvers to avoid incoming torps. The Japanese can just drop them without aiming - they will surely hit something in the wall of ships in front of them...

So you will spread your fleet in several hex when knowing there is a 1300AC KB coming?

Very wise.

I am curious about why there are such significant differences between these two tests.
The strike packages seem alike, but ...

Well the first thing to come to mind is the massive amount of ships in the one TF, also mixing CV's with CVE's isn't the best idea.

Other factors are CAP altitude, weather, incoming strike alt etc. etc.

you are aware that the max no of ships in an air combat TF would be 25 anyway and there are more than that in the combat report which leads me to my next question if you know that a combat report shows all ships that
were attacked which can be in different TFs in the hex?

Obviously not lol

This matches my own experience and situation pretty well. No amount of CAP in the world can prevent a well escorted strike getting through. Its the same thing that was observed in the GJ vs rader game I think. While the BETA did away with the problem when it comes to LBA strikes the problem still persists when it comes to CV strikes. It is what it is and I guess pretty much the only thing you can do is try and plan on taking losses. I don´t like the "phenomenon" as its a guaranteed success as long as the strike launches and I don´t think anything should be a guaranteed success in the game. But in the end its not going to change the game. And as with many things it goes both ways...which you can use to your advantage!

I wouldn´t bother trying different setting and stuff to try and circumvent the result. As Castor I have poured hours and hours into trying different CAP settings and TF setups and in the end it doesn´t change much if anything.

Obviously you will have to deal with the KB at one point. And the engine works the same for both sides. Just make sure you get within 7 hexes of the KB and the problem will be at the bottom of the sea after the turn. Tool your CVs to be "escort heavy". You don´t need 2000 planes on CAP. Half that would give you the exact same result. You will both lose a good amount of ships but the difference being you can afford it and your opponent cannot. Once the KB is dealt with all you need is a couple of hundred fighters on CAP and you are pretty much safe from LBA.

Good luck!

I would have to say that the results are about normal. Even though the computer shows that you have a large number of planes up on CAP, the plentiful number of attacks will dramatically affect your results. You can have many damaged fighter and many that no longer have sufficient ammo. Your pilots might have accumulated a lot of fatigue as well. The most important thing to remember is that a large coordinated strike will have a very good chance of getting through no matter what your CAP level is. This is actually not out of the realm of reality considering the quality of the Japanese pilots and the fact that they were using excellent aircraft with excellent performance characteristics. As said before, you can not really defend against an attack like this if you charge right into the hornets nest then you can hope for the best but don't be surprised if you end up getting the worst.

The second point is your TF configuration. Do you have enough TFs and are they configured correctly. If you have massive TF that are too heavy in carriers then when the enemy gets through his planes will have no other targets but carriers. I generally put no more than 6 fast carriers in a late war Allied TF and maybe 10-12 CVEs in a single TF. Do you have plentiful escort? Escorts will draw some of the attacks and if they are fast ships like CLs and DDs many of those torpedo attacks that hit your slow as crap CVEs will end up missing. Do you have fast BBs in all of your fleet carrier TFs and slow BBs in the CVE TFs? Just like pilots in real life the AI likes to target BBs as much as carriers. Fast BBs are there to absorb bombs and torpedo attacks that would otherwise attack your carriers. A couple of BBs in a TF might draw as many as half of the bombing attacks-meaning less hits on your carriers.

Last but not least, you expect too much from your CVEs. Once a group of bombers gets through, if CVEs are targeted then they are going to get hit and hit hard. They only go 16 to 19 knots and have no armor. A massed torpedo attack with experienced pilots could not miss. I would be reluctant to send them in if I was expecting this kind of air attack.

This is not a abuse of engine but a must move in the game.

Guess what will happen if you send a carrier fleet of only 1000ac to cover the amphibious operation, when Japanese are capable of sending 1300AC carriers planes strike wave and hundreds of LBA strike wave?

quote:

ORIGINAL: hades1001

So you will spread your fleet in several hex when knowing there is a 1300AC KB coming?

Very wise.

Both posts show your error in thinking. To sum it up:

- Yes, amassing such a number of flight decks in a single hex is abuse of the engine, as has been discussed times and times again on these forums. You should know it, as you seem to have visited threads discussing the CAP issue in general. Most extended debates on this topic contain some information on overstack.
- The reasoning behind spreading out is that the strikes spread out as well. Based on my experience it works beautifully but - as it should - is no guarantee.
- As John already said, jmalter´s post on the beginnning of this page is very good. Every hint he gives could help you improve the situation.

But the most important part is: You deliberately moved a fleet of flight decks, consisting mainly of ex-AKs with some wooden planks screwed on top, right into the face of an obviously healthy, trained and very numerous defense. AND you expect to suffer low casualties. This will not work. Ever.

If you have to do that, expect it will be bloody as hell. If you got alternative ways to achieve what you want, or think the costs are too high for the possible gain, don´t do it. It is that simple...
Thats basic strategy.

And finally, not that it is important as you will suffer more losses than you seem to accept with any setup in this specific situation, but are you seriously assuming that to set a major percentage of your CAP at altitudes below the incoming escorts contributes to your cause in any way and would be the proper way to set up layers?

I'm sorry I may sound confusing but THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINING THREAD.

It's intend to be a Q/A thread.

I'm asking the questions why CAP don't intercept bombers when there are a large number of planes.

EXAMPLE:

When the strike wave is small, you see this message:

2 planes vectored on to bombers

When the strike wave is big, you don't see this message anymore. Looks to me that CAP failed to intercept the bombers every time during the
many tests we performed.

Someone said that big numbers escorts will sometimes help the bombers to breakthrough intact.

But I'm seeing success rate is very high and only once it failed to break through, even in that case I don't see the message"2 planes vectored on to bombers, and the overall damage KB can commit is pretty stable for one day.

Is this normal?

In my game hex 80,110 is a base hex. If you are fighting with your CVs in this hex you may want to read section 7.2.1.13.2 - Aircraft Carriers in a Base Hex.

section 7.2.1.13.2 do much less impact then you may expect if it do impact.

KHawk has a very valid point.

The fact that all your fighter units stationed on CV/CVLs can only engage strikes at 50% of their nominal strenght is far from insignificant.

Anyways, this is getting repetetive. You by now should have received a good ammount of responses that combined easily have the potential to provide a satisfactory explanation.

Yes, in this situation your loss figures seem quite plausable.

and having 40 squadrons at 40 different, perfect altitudes wouldn't have resulted in a different outcome. I'm sorry that after all the years I have still to disagree, but you put too much real world fantasy into
it. Go and TEST it, please. 15000ft or 20000ft works just fine to engage these strikes, especially with the insane number of fighters. Like many other things one is "supposed" to do, there is not much truth in it.
I've put dozens of hours into it to confirm or deny these theories while there are enough ppl around not even making it to late years and all they do is playing around with 3-400 aircraft max.

There is only one truth again, the code can't handle these numbers, NO MATTER what you try to do. Those are nothing but myths. Go TEST it, just once. Then come back.

It actually WOULD have exulted in a different outcome. Altitude of CAP does matter, though it won't STOP these strikes, only reduce their effectiveness.

Late war Japanese strike planes are very fast, and if some of the CAP is taking almost an hour to get into position to intercept, then it's likely some will get through.

quote:

ORIGINAL: hades1001

So in this situation how can I better defend myself?

The distance the CAP is set to will also matter. Is there any Allied CAP over the hex the fleet are in exclusively or are they all set to strike distance?

What is the TF composition for these CVE TFs? Any BBs, CLAAs, other heavy AA platforms there?

A base hex will certainly limit your CAP a LOT, and you still haven't bothered to mention your actual CAP percentage setting. You want help but don't seem to be willing to reveal much, so do you really want to figure it out?

For those who is saying that base hex will affect CAP Efficiency, is the claim based on real game experience or just reading the manual?

For my observation, I don't notice a significant impact, at least not like 50% less.

Did I miss something? Can someone confirm?

Thanks.

BTW, my cap distance is set to 0, and at 90% rate.

hades1001,

A screenshot of an affected CVE TF (composition) and a screenshot of a representative VF (fighter squadron) on your CVE TF is required at this point for further input from yours truly.

Thanks.
