Hi there,

Seeing as though my game-by-proxy plan, using Cribtop's AAR has come to a conclusion, I've decided to start my very first WitP:AE game. I've skimmed through the manual, gosh, but still have a few questions that I'm seeking an answer to. I hope you'll help me find the answers I seek. Anyhoo, here it goes.

1. In the manual it states that LRCAP is a mission, however I cannot find that mission for my groups. How do I set LRCAP correctly?

2. What are the requirements for drawing replacement aircraft?

3. What are the requirements for upgrading aircraft?

Thanks for your time replying to my questions.

PS. The search function on this forum leaves much to be desired.

Good to have you playing!

1. LR CAP is a setting in F, NF and FB groups. See example below. You can use commander discretion, but it really works best if you are interested in covering a distant target or TF to set the choice for target.

For replacements and upgrades it can be a little bit complicated. This section should answer most questions.

Having 20k supplies in the base or in the base with an HQ in range of the airframe type is the key.

It will mostly fatigue your air groups. You can use LR CAP commander discretion in a tight area with lots of bases for mutual support, but ideally you'd have groups flying similar missions in those bases as well.

If you want to shoot down recon or transport, find out where they're flying, then CAP or LR CAP that base with A LOT of fighters. If you want to destroy search planes LR CAP a TF specifically and put it in range of the search; you may attract more than search planes though, which can function as a CAP trap. Make sure you and your opponent are on the same page about how you feel about CAP traps.

Try this for searches: use below in Google replace searchterm with what you want to search for:

site:matrixgames.com +"War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition" searchterm

LRCAP will normally shoot down less units than standard CAP if that's what your asking. It isn't more effective than standard CAP but unlike standard CAP can be projected to another hex or follow a TF at a big hit to coverage numbers.

Beyond about 4 hexes ... there isn't a lot of coverage and your units will get a lot of fatigue (both planes and pilots).

Welcome to the forum. Lots of new players these days and that is great to see. As said before do not use LRCAP with commanders discretion. Use it only when you need it and designate a target hex. Overuse will result in high fatigue, low morale and lots more operational losses over time. In addition to all that is already described. I use long range CAP to escort my bombers whenever I can. Normal bomber escort tend to get slaughtered by even inferior fighters. LRCAP as escort gives you a more even playing field but can be a bit more precarious as it sometimes will not show up.

As for upgrading aircraft. Generally if you can take replacements then the conditions for upgrading are also satisfied. You may have to pay PP for upgrading aircraft along non historical paths such as upgrading 2E bomber units to 4E or giving US navy planes such as hellcats to a marine squadron.

Attract? No.

Shoot down? Yes. But with all of the penalties mentioned in posts above.

The other thing to beware of with LR CAP is that air groups set to a short LR CAP may alter their orders and go for sweeps, strikes, patrols, or recon out to their normal range. For an A6M or a Ki-43 (or a Hellcat) that can be a long way. They may also discount specific orders, targeted LR CAP, and go beyond settings. I've had some set to LR CAP ships 1 hex away react to 5 hexes distant.

Keep in mind here that there are as many ways to play this game as there are players. You'll eventually find your own comfort zone. I myself don't care for LRCAP too often. Find the fatigue hits are too high for my liking. I'll usually sweep a base before striking it. I'll also include some escort to prevent my bombers from getting massacred if they show up before my sweep.
As for air groups drawing replacements, know that they will draw a maximum of 12 A/C at one time , and only do it once a week.
