Guys how do you organize a blockade? I build and place blockade squadrons but still have 20% efficiency in early 1862 on manual supply options. I also block Ches. bay and tried direct blockade of Charlestone but Fort Samter sank some of my ships.

There are two ways to blockade: blue water and brown water.

For blue water, you're going to want to put blockade squadrons (the ship unit with eight ships in it) in both the Atlantic and Gulf Blockade boxes. Once you reach 40% blockade, which is about 5 full squadrons in each, putting any more of these units in the boxes won't raise the blockade percentage any further.

To get above 40%, you need put a brown water blockade in place by capturing or blockading key ports. Once a port is blockaded, it adds its percentage to the total blockade percentage. Big ports like New Orleans are more valuable than smaller ones.

If you hover your mouse over a port (the ship anchor icon) a tool-tip will tell you which water region (or regions) the port connects to. To block the port, you need to put enough ship elements into those water region or regions. Hovering over a water region will bring up a tool-tip which will tell you how many ship elements you need to do so. This number can change over time, so you need to check and see if you still have enough elements to keep the port blockaded from time to time.

Also, some forts will block ports which are upriver of them. If you hold Fort Monroe, for example, it will blockade Richmond.

And if you're having problems with forts sinking ships, try a couple things.

-Make sure your fleets are in green/green stance when running forts. Once they're past the forts and where you want them, put them in blue/blue or blue/orange.
-Use a leader with the fort runner trait.
-Use ironclad ship escorts. If they get hit, they take cohesion losses instead of damage.
-Make sure you've turned off fleet bombardment if turned it on earlier.

There's a good discussion in another post over at AGEOD about navies in general. Happy blockading.

I have noticed one thing: I usually reduce the number of squadrons in the blockade boxes at the beginning (using them for brown-water), but the percentage doesn't seem to dip. And, I also don't add more ships, but over time the percentage increases anyway to the point of being 70% in '64 with the original 3-4 squadrons I left there. Bug? WAD? Not sure, but it works.

If you're taking ships out of the blockade boxes and using them to directly blockade ports, you're losing some % from the boxes but adding % from the ports being blocked. Since the % is really low at the beginning, I'd imagine that removing some of the squadrons doesn't do much to lower it further. And the directly blocking ports affects that port's resource production, so there's an advantage to this strategy.

Only one of the developers could tell you if what your experiencing is WAD, but... if you're blocking or capturing more and more ports as the game goes on the blockade % is going to rise regardless of how many squadrons you have in the boxes. Southern ports each have a blockade value and some of them are significant. New Orleans is worth 16 points, so if you capture or blockade it your blockade percentage will go up that much. It sounds like this is what you're experiencing, but if you think something is wrong I'd post your save game in the technical support forum.

Blockade % is the reason you may want to gobble up smaller Southern ports; taking them will increase the blockade %. It's the easiest way to do it. Smaller ports don't have VPs or other production structures, but they aren't likely to be defended either.

Depends on who or what you are playing against. The AI has a tendency to Hulk-smash small coastal garrisons, especially on harder settings. So they may be easily taken, but might be harder to hold.

Both are valid strategies, which is the mark of a good game.
