I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination on the German ORBAT, or equipment. I was curious however that the PzGren ATGM teams do NOT have thermal sights. Now I know that the MILAN was offered with three different sighting options (and only one being a thermal), was it issued this way in the German Army? I would have assumed that the MIRA sight (thermal) would be something they would have used for multiple reasons. Again I'm absolutely no expert on these things, just curious.

Well, in the german airborne forces we had the MIRA System. Four in every company, back in the 90`s.

If someone can point me to date of service for the Mira thermal sight with the
Milan I can update the database. Thanks.

all good reads for Mira sights, range, dates etc

quote"
MILAN (Missile d'Infantrie Leger ANti-char) is made by the Euromissile consortium. Maximum range is 1950m, the missile arming after 20m and having a minimum planning range of 400m (in practice effective from 280-1950m). PARAs like carrying heavy stuff and tabbing long distances. The firing post weighs 18kg with the missile re-loads weighing 12kg. The excellent MIRA thermal sight was not yet in service in 1982 meaning that night shoots tended to be accompanied by illumination from mortars or schermully type flares. An account of such an engagement appears in Nick Vaux's book "March to the South Atlantic" where J Coy 42Cdo engages Argentine MG positions on the western end of Mt. Harriet with MILAN whilst the Mortar platoon provided illumination. Vaux comments on the leisurely flight time of the missile (12.5 seconds to get to maximum range) which is a potential issue if engaging fleeting AFV targets which may be behind cover when the missile arrives but was not a problem for bunker-busting in the Falklands." end quote
