i notice a significant number of axis air groups have a maximum of only 4 aircraft.

is there any reason not to disband them, the planes go to the pool,

Think those are HQ staff units; not sure what effects arise from disbandment. Not a significant issue for my game play

thx for response, didn't think it was such a good idea to have the code decide to maybe send 4 bombers by themselves.

It does not, the larger the airgroup the bigger chance that it will get selected to execute a mission , even thou only 1 or 2 aircraft are actualy sent for that particular mission.

ok, thx.

Another question. I am playing for the first time with FOW. I give the air recon to the ai, then (not finding much) do a bunch of manuals. Still not much. So it seems a little better to do the manuals. Or maybe to just advance, hex by hex, and let the ground guys do the "close in" recon. I may have answered my own question. Any comments.

I recon the rail nodes above all else, a severed rail conection puts presure on SHC to fall back or face encirclement .

You can bomb units on a RR but you can't bomb the RR itself.

If I'm in right, a Luftwaffe Jagdgruppe was usually composed by:
- 1 Schwarm (4 AC);
- 3 Gruppe (36 AC);

ex. Jagdgruppe 1
- Stab/JG1 (Schwarm, 4 AC);
- I./JG1 (Gruppe, 36 AC);
- II./JG1 (Gruppe, 36 AC);
- III./JG1 (Gruppe, 36 AC);
Sometimes there's also Staffel composed by 12 AC.

re; ai air missions, v10.7.11
the lower the setting (air doctrine) the more likely the mission is flown, just with fewer aircraft.

is this true?

If you meant mission priority such as interdiction or ground support , yes.

bombing cities is done manualy so you can leave the doctrine as it is .
The only missions the ai conducts on it's own is interdiction and ground support .

setting at 200% means that twice the normal aircraft would be sent on individual mission, but the overal number of missions would be
smaller as the airgroups exhaust their mileage faster .

thx gab,

kind of a dumb question by me, i knew that bomb unit, airfield, city was manual.

doing my first game as sov v ai. what i have in mind is to mess with the axis ground support or really any axis mission where i can shoot down bombers. so if i have it right, ground support (escort) to shoot down bombers flying ground support. interdiction for everything else. i understand about % required to fly and moral (better morale, better chance to fly) i assume exp is similar to moral, and leader initiative and moral and air rating.

So, broadly speaking, since i want those sov fighters in the air as much as i can, then use a lower escort setting early in the campaign, then maybe increase it as exp, morale, leader ratings improve.

on a related subject i think i can handle manual upgrades

c

Air doctrine for me ,is related to what is happening on the ground ,

if launching just a handful of atacks, trying to breach the front and encircle soviet units, ground support+excort is set high .
if the front had become static and I need to hit everywhere just to keep moving, ground support+excort is set low .

for my experience i use as soviet
ground support 160 with escort 200
don't be shy, you have airbases and planes to make it even over all the front
intercept will be 300, trying to make losses
