Overview of Jan 3rd - 4th

Main KB: Believed to be combine and at 1629,21.

Mini-KB: Believed to be now in the NEI area at 55,87.

Lexington: The Lady Lex also know as Fishy Food (Trade Mark Pending) seems to still be afloat and repairing well. Midway/Pearl has the KB in the way. The surface forces I spit off form the Lady Lex were smashed but did the decoy job well. Forty hexes from Dutch Harbor and closing.

Enterprise: Is detected after an air raid at 173,145. In route now south and then east towards San Diego - will meet replenishment task force in route. (21 from Suspected KB)

Saratoga: Following Enterprise.

Yorktown Following Enterprise, believe undetected.

Force Z Appears to be undetected at Soerabaja with the loss of Price of Wales this force is reduced but still ready to rock and roll for some more dashes north for night combat using British Radar. Repulse back in Task Force and heading to Ambon for safety for a couple of days if that is really the Mini-KB heading out wayy.

Wake Thirty mines in place and the LYB's 1st landing force was just wiped out. We have a large potion of the Lexington Carrier Wing at the island.

NEI It appears he is going to really start his push now. The Mini-KB is here and is now in route to Palembang (Possibly Batavia???) All Air units are on Alert and ready to go.

Paymyra Is now held by two Def Art Units, 1 MAG HQ and 1 USN Std Base Force and level 2 forts. Supply and coastal AA unit in route. Back up to 20 P-40E operational for defense.

The overall plan to hold the Philippines and Singapore seems to still be intact. Clark Field that is now over-stacked by 10K to 50K of troops. All that we really hold now in Clark Field and Bataan.

Christmas Island is firmly held by ~7K of Enemy troops and climbing.

Still Shuffling units to the islands around Pearl and hope for the best. At this point it hard to tell what he may be up to but for some reason I am still thinking OZ but this is looking less and less likely. Want to try and reinforce Baker Island next and start something prepping to take back Canton and Christmas but this is a long ways off.

1st Month Overview

As we are a month into the war I wanted to take a break from the daily updates to overview the progress to date. I am going to try and do this every one to three months as a review for anyone that is reading this and to help me stay focused my long terms goals for each area.
The overall plan is to cost him supply, resources, fuel an oil any time possible. This may not have an effect today or next month but over time it will put him in a position to not be able to swarm me with land and air units in 1944-1946.

He has taken Hong Kong, Manila, Christmas Island, Shortlands, Manus, Kavieng and Northern Boreno. He does not have Batavia, Singapore, Soerabaja, Palemburg, Wake or Rabaul.
So far we have had one major victory “Battle of Borneo” and two major losses “Battle of Wake” and the Battle of Christmas Island.

Battle of Borneo (won)
Lost the BB Price of Wales, CL Dragon & CL Boise for the reported loss (gain of salt taken) BB Kongo, BB Haruna, CA Myoko, CL Katori, DD Oyshio. He may also have lost some xAKs but this is not confirmed, but at least one other BB and two other CAs will also need some major yard time. His invasion then pauses from the 22nd of December in the NEI until the 7th of January when the Mini-KB arrived from Truk for air cover.

Battle of Wake (lost)
We lost the CA Portland, CA Chicago, CA Astoria and the DD Allen. The Lexington was also put out of action but is now safe and 17 hexes from Dutch harbor (more on this below). We reported sunk the CL Tenryu and the DD Kisaragi. The Lexington hit the surface force on day 1 and sunk the CL and DD, we missed the second invasion task force sent to Wake and then on day two was supposed to run away. The AI task force commander instead reacted southwest of Wake which allowed the KB to catch us on day 3. Supplies and one Mar Def Art unit did make it ashore and his landing was wiped out.

Battle of Christmas Island (lost/win)
In the long run I think this will hurt him far more than it helps him. We lost around 4 TKs, 15 xAKs, 4 Aps and 5 DDs. We stopped the first invasion of Christmas Island cold by catching it trying to land with a DD force. I think his plan was to take all three Islands which would have been great but he had to divert the other landings to Christmas to take it, which he now holds. My goal now is to take this back in ’42 in a war of attrition.

Burma
Rangoon is held by the 1st Burma Infantry Division and the 17th Indian Division along with an assortment of Infantry Battalions and Engineering units. One AVG Fighter unit and one British Fighter unit are providing air cover. The goal is to hold as long as possible, making him take the time and supply to drive me out.

India
Ready the army and air force for a drive back into Burma starting October 1st of 1943. I want to start fighting if only a battle of maneuver at the end of 1943 to start burning supply. If he had to move overland supply some of it gets lost over the poor roads. If he ships it in I snip away at the ships and it costs him fuel. Early I start this drain greater the long term outlook for me is. The USAF will be bases out of Chittagong and the CWAF out of Dimapur. The goal is to hold all of the bases on the Indian side of the Burma boarder by the end of 1943, or be advancing out of them if they never fall.

Australia
For some reason I thought he might try a landing at Darwin/Perth but this does not seem to be the case. I still hold Horn Island and Port Moresby. I had not planned on trying hard to defend these but I have just routed one AUS Art unit and additional supply to this base (currently has ~15K). I am going to send additional AUS units as they become available to Port Moresby.

NEI
DIP (Die in Place) orders have been issued. The plan is to hold Batavia, Soerabaja and Palemburg as long as possible and see how much damage we can do to each as they fall. Baravia and Soerabaja have all of their land units at each base. Palemburg still has some units moving to it from all over the island. Task Force Z’s Battle of Borneo seems to have had a major impact, while the Prince of Wales was lost (along with two reported Japanese BBs--maybe) his advance along this front stopped until this turn when the Mini-KB moved from Rabul to Borneo to cover the advance.

PHI
The contraction continues, at this point we simply DIP at Clark and then again at Bataan. I hope to hold into the start of February. We traded at 2:3 in the air and I was able to win a battle vs and infantry and armor regiment at Clark Field when they ran into my defensive wall.

Singapore
The contraction continues, at this point we simply DIP Singapore. We still hold Mersing (falling back) and Batu Phat (empty). The goal here is to hold until the middle of Febuary.

Pago Pago/Suva/Noumea
Pago is my forward base in the area, fuel is in route but we are at 50K of supplies and climbing. Suva and Pago Pago are held by a Marine Rgt, various Eng Units, and Various Art units. Base building is in progress for both Pago Pago and Suva. Looking to add Mines and PTs boats as soon as possible. Noumea is currently held by Aus Comando Coy, AA Reg, RAN Base Force and a FF Detachment. Eleimates of the 8th Australian Division are in route to the coast and will be sent to hold this area along with any US/NZ units that can be scrounged.

Line Islands
Palmyra/Fanning are still held (Christmas Island is lost) and will be built up massively to facilitate an attack to retake Christmas Island and then Canton. Palmyra has two PBY and three Fighter units (25 P-40E’s) as air cover, USN Std Base Force, 2 Mar Def Art, Level 2 Forts, 166 mines, 1 ACM and 1 MAG. Palmyra will have 1inf battalion and 1 base group added to it, this will exceed the 6K staking limit but so be it. Fanning has 1 NZ inf Det, Level 2 Forts and 1 Base group (unloading). Fanning will have 1 Inf Battalion sent, 1 US Inf Division, 1 Combat Eng, 150 mines, 1 ACM and 1 MAG sent. Both Islands will be protected by PT boats. The one US Division will be used to retake Christmas & Canton.

Wake
We still Hold! There is one USN Std Base Force, 2 Mar Def Art, 30 Mine, 1 Fort, ~5K of supplies and 30 Aircraft of all types from the Lexington on the Island. Looking to see what else I can get there.

Summary January 1st - 17th 1943

Dutch Surface Forces NEI: They slipped around Borneo counter clockwise and managed to intercept either an unloaded troop transport or a supply task force. Trying to keep him on his toes as the Mini-KB dropped off the Borneo radio.

Allied Ships
BC Repulse, Shell hits 2
CA Houston
CL Tromp
CL Marblehead
DD Stewart
DD Vampire
DD Evertsen
DD Van Nes
DD Scout
DD Thanet

Line Islands: Allied High Command has figured out that P-39s can reach the island of Palmyra if they stage through Hilo and then Johnson. So the Palmyra now has two PBY's and Four Fighter Air units (25 P-39s and 38 P-40E's). Palmyra now has two Mar Def Art, one Inf Bat, one USN Std Base Force and one MAG. Fanning has one Base Group, One Fanning Det and one Inf Bat. Palmyra also has one ACM, 151 mines and 12 PT boats. At this rate we should be able to hold this area unless he brings in KB and lots of landings forces.

KB: Exact Location unknown but suspect its at 157,123 moving to harasses the build up at Palmyra and Fanning.

Mini-KB: Disappear off of Western Borneo, did not intercept the Dutch Forces above.

Lexington: Two days from Seattle and should start repairs soon, 19/31(31)/03(2).

Enterprise In route to San Diego to refit/rearm.

Saratoga Following Enterprise.

Yorktown Following Enterprise.

China

The good news is I won a small battle in China as I fell back, where he was trying to pocket me at Sinyang. Was able to hold him up for two weeks, burn supply and then fight my way out! Not sure how often this risk will work but it did here.

Still I am going to need to figure out how to really fight on China I am am just guessing at an overall defensive game plan.....

Samoa Islands

Seems the KB is moving from the Line Islands and my be up to something here. I think I can hold Pago Pago with the current forces. There are more land and air units in route around the edge of the map from the west coast.

Pago Pago Defenses

Seems I have more fighters than he has on the carriers. Now I have no real naval attack forces but I should be able to bleed him.

Overview as of Jan 27th

As my opponent is out of pocket today, I will be posting a lot of information on the current status, any comments or thoughts are welcome from anyone. I have found lots of help from the forum so thanks again in advance.

Main KB: Believed to be at 140,144 north of Fiji. There are coming back from the Line Islands I am assuming they are in route to Truck to take replacements and do minor repairs. From there I am going to assume that they will proceed to support the taking of Truk.

Mini-KB: In the NEI area at 49,89. Supporting the landing to follow soon at Palembang.

Lexington: The Lady Lex no longer know as Fishy Food (Trade Mark Pending) is at Port at Bremerton and will be fully repaired in 68 days --- 19/28(28)/2(2). The air units are at Seattle with the exception of the TB squadron that is split with all of its aircraft at Wake Island. The air units have been stripped of their best pilots and converted to training until the Lexington is repaired. A mission is underway to "rescue" the TB unit at wake as the 12 TBD-1 Devastators are really needed for my pools......

Enterprise:Repaired, refitted, re-planed and about to set sail from San Diego to bomb naval units at/near and the airfield at Christmas Island.

Saratoga:Repaired, refitted, re-planed and following Enterprise.

YorktownRepaired, refitted, re-planed and following Enterprise.

Force Z Appears to be undetected at Soerabaja with the loss of Price of Wales this force is reduced but still ready to rock and roll for some more dashes north for night combat using British Radar.

Wake Thirty mines in place, Level 2-40% Forts, 8 F4F-3's and 12 TBD-1'a. There is one USN Std Base Force, 2 Marine Def Art and 1 Inf Bat (in route). Supplies at 4593. I make a hard push to hold this as grabing Marcus Island in 43/44 might be able to give him a good scare.

NEI It appears he is going to really start his push now. The Mini-KB is here and is now in route to Palembang. Looking at trying to bomb the Oil field with the Dutch forces at Batavia.

Paymyra Is now held by two Def Art Units, 1 MAG HQ and 1 USN Std Base Force.1 USA Inf Bat.151 mines, 1 ACM and level 2-40% forts. Aviation Engineering Battalion is in route, this will put us over the 6K stacking limit but it will only be on the island until the building of the airfield/ports/forts are maxed out and then I will move it to Fanning. Four Fighter units Back up to 49P-40E's, 25 P-39D's and 5 PBY's. operational for defense.

Fanning Forts are at Level 2 and the port is 0-35%. 1 Base Group, 1 US Army Inf Bat and 1 Fanning Inf Det. There is are 6 PBY's at the island. I have one Combat Engine Bat is in route (prepping for Christmas Island). Two US INF Divisions, 2 Art Battalions, 2 Combat Engineering Bat have been identified and will move when safe to do so to Fanning to retake Christmas Island. Hope to find two non-marine armor units to add at some point but this might be overkill.

PHI and Singapore:The overall plan to hold the Philippines and Singapore seems to still be intact. Clark Field that is now over-stacked by 10K to 50K of troops. All that we really hold now in Clark Field and Bataan.

Christmas Island: Is firmly held by ~7K of Enemy troops and climbing. No idea on the ports/airfields.

Port Blair: Held by 1 IND Inf Bde, 1 Port Blair Adv Base Force, Forts 2-62%, 28K of supplies and one RN Base Force in route. Will have a fighter unit over this at some point.

Horn Island: 1 RAAF Base Force, 1 Horn Island Base Force, 1 AUS Inf Bar, Fort 2-18% and 2100 supplies. Willing to write this off I did add the extra Eng unit but at this point other than supplies these units will DIP (die in place).

Port Moresby: 1 AUS Anti-Tank Rgt, 2 AUS Art Rgt, 2 AUS Inf Bat, 1 AUS Inf Company, 2-99% Forts and 65K supplies. As he is taking so long I may see what else I can get in here to slow him down.

New Caledonia: Koumac is held by an AUS Commando Company with 1 small AUS ENG Det in route. Noumea has 3 AMc's, Forts 2-37%, 1 AUS RAN Base Force, 1 AUS Commando Company, 1 New Cat Inf Det, 1 AUS Light AA Reg and 6500 supplies. The plan is to send the rest of the AUS Commando Companies to build the Battalions to the islands - all other Commando companies will be flown to port Moresby as reinforcements. Two two remaining battalions of the 8th AUS Inf Division will also be sent here once the make it to Brisbane (30 days out maybe????).

Pago Pago: 75 mines, 2 ACM, Port 2-67%, Air Field 2-59%, Fort 3-0%. There are 4 Fighter (74 P-39D's), 3 Medium Bomber (33 B-26) and one PBY (12 PBY-5s) units at the island. At the island I have 2 ARM Bat, 1 Art Bat, 1 MAR Def Bat, 1 USN Std Base Force, 1 Const Reg, 1 Aviation Eng Bat, 1 Pion Bat, 1 Base Group, 1 MAG, II Fighter HQ, 1 MAR Inf Rgt. Maybe I move 1 base force and 1 Mar Def Art Unit to Luganville?????

Fiji: Nadi has 1 Nadi Base Force, 1 NEZ Inf Bat and Forts 3-09%. Suva has Port 3-09, Air Field 2-48, Fort 3-05. There are four 4 Hudson's, 9 Vincent, 2 S.19 and 12 PBY's for air units. On the ground in Suva we have 4 Art Bats, 1 Base Group, 1 RNZAF Base Force, 1 MAG, 1 MAR Inf Reg, 2 NEZ INF Bats and 1 MAR Para Bat. I might be ok with risking an art bat or four but they would need to have something else added to them to hold some thing.

New Hebrides & Espiritu Santo: The e is nothing here other than 1 SS at sea at Luganville. The question is what if anything do I pull from Fiji/Pago Pago to hold this area?

Still Shuffling units to the islands around Pearl and hope for the best. At this point it hard to tell what he may be up to but for some reason I am still thinking OZ but this is looking less and less likely. Want to try and reinforce Baker Island next and start something prepping to take back Canton and Christmas but this is a long ways off.

RD&D Tracking

I have pulled the below data from tracker (have it in an Excel file if anyone wants to take a look). The hope here is to track what airframes are being advanced so it does not surprise me at some point. If anyone see what he is up to let me know!

I marked the ones that I think matter coming in 1942 but if there is an aircraft that has vaule to him I missed shout .

This just leads me to more questions.... but lets start with is the Zero A6M3a range worth the trade off in loss of maneuver? I don't think so but will he????

Japanese Ships Sunk

Over a month later its still reporting to BB's of his as lost after the Battle of Borneo with Task Force Z. And the one BB with 25 Shell hits and 1 Torpedo heavy Fires and Heavy Damage is not on this list. If I got just one of the BBs for the Price of Wales with the three weeks of time I bought it was a great trade.

Japanese Air Losses

It seems his losses have been high but I have no real basis to compete it to. Am I wrong?

Victory Points

All I am trying to do is avoid the 4-1 Auto Victory in 1943. I am thinking he will make out at 2 - 1 sometime mid to the end of 1943. There are a bunch of points he will get for the land forces in the PHI, Singapore and the NEI.

I try to get every upgrade I can ASAP, unless it is one I am not ever going to do. However, with carriers, I wouldn't necessarily pull them out of an operational need just to get the upgrades.

Re: your list of Japanese aircraft.

Other interesting aircraft: Ki-49-IIa (armoured and better range than the Sally)

Also note that some of the later aircraft may be R&D rather than the earlier:

Ki-43-IIb (first armoured Oscar)
A6M5 (has an R&D path via the Rufe meaning it can arrive very early)
A6M8 (also can arrive very early)
D4Y3, D4Y4 (often easier to research than the D4Y1)

Thanks Krieg, that is what I was thinking but as this is my first PBEM game I wanted to see if I was missing anything that someone else knows that I just missed. I am going to assume for Planing Purposes that the KB will start to go into overhaul starting in June of 1942 with some portion of it not available to strop my counter attack at Christmas.

As some point he will need to pull the KB back to port to repair some minor damage for just being at sea for so long. So far the KB has....

1. Hit Peal.
2. Moved to Wake to hunt my CV in the area.
3. Moved to Turk I assume but was off the grid for 10 days.
4. Moved to Christmas Island to support taking it and failed.
5. Moved to support the landing at Canton.
6. Moved back to Christmas to and took it.
7. Split with some of it at Christmas and some of it going to Wake to hit the Lexington.
8. Reformed at Christmas and smashed more stuff heading to the area.
9. Now moving to Truk.

But as its January 27th, I have to assume it will just re-arm at Turk and then move to Take Rabual as he has to get this and the Islands around it. Right now all he has is Shortlands and I have hit this with six or seven bombardment task forces to make sure its not building.

Re: your list of Japanese aircraft.

Other interesting aircraft: Ki-49-IIa (armored and better range than the Sally)

Also note that some of the later aircraft may be R&D rather than the earlier:

Ki-43-IIb (first armored Oscar)
A6M5 (has an R&D path via the Rufe meaning it can arrive very early)
A6M8 (also can arrive very early)
D4Y3, D4Y4 (often easier to research than the D4Y1)

Thanks Spidery I want to keep an eye on all of these so every 30 days I can see if arrival dates are advancing. Not much I can do about it as the new aircraft will achieve tactical surprise but I want to avoid the strategic surprise a new airframe arriving unexpectedly could cause.

While I wait....

My esteemed Opponent AirGriff is AFK for the weekend so while I wait for the combat replay and study the map I figured I would address some questions I have been getting about the Lady Lex and the Wake Island boondoggle.

I believe that you have to be aggressive and calculating with the surface forces at your disposal, they need to be shown, active and engaging something somewhere every 15 - 30 days to ensure the other side is honest. I can't have him running out to grab the Shortlands or Christmas Island in December of 1942 unsupported --- bypassing everything behind them. He needs to advance in good order or under cover of one of the KB's. Also playing two day turns have an effect how how this mess played out.

Contrary to the disaster at Wake, I believe the carries need to be split into single CV task forces and ground together in groups of two. The need to be held in reserve for key objectives and only used when the location of the KB is known and the mini-KB is at least suspected if not know. The initial plan for for one grouping at Christmas Island and one at Dutch Harbor went out the air lock when he made his first move on Christmas Island that was repulsed by the DD Force.

I don't understand why some Allies Players hurl their carriers at locations to try and prevent landings or bomb and island just to drop some bombs. I believe the carrier should be at sea (need to max the day/night xp at the very least) and ready to respond to a landing/opportunity if the above notes on the KB/Mini-KB are true.

The issues with Wake was bad intelligence, aggressive Allied Play and very solid play by AirGriff. The Lexington moved from Dutch harbor to escort the reinforcement of one marine defense battalion, one coastal AA regiment and supplies to Wake Island. The KB was off bombing Fanning/Palmyra and making sure I could not get anything else into those area as he made his second attempt to take Christmas Island (which he did). At some point he split all but two of his CV's out of the KB and swung them around and outside of search area to support a landing at Wake (well played).

Day 1
A turn orders can be issued. The Lexington Task Force and the reinforcement task force arrived at the same time as his second landing force at Wake but his CV's were one day out at this time. My marine defense battalion got ashore and the Lexington smashed the landing. However, she was under order to linger northeast of Wake for one day and then withdraw (just in case). Unfortunately, the AI reacted my CV force to the southwest of Wake I assume to crush what was left of the landing force.

Day 2
At the start of the next day the KB minus two CV's was northeast of Wake --- close to where I had been and should have before withdrawing towards Dutch Harbor while I was three hexes southwest of Wake. Instead of being safely in route to Dutch Harbor I was in a word FUBAR'd. His CV's hit first in the AM and damaged the Lexington and my return fire was split between a BC and two CV's for no effect. I was not able to FLY in the PM and he again hit the Lexington and some DD's.

Day 3
A turn orders can be issued. The Lexington is damaged and can't fly operations. After looking at the relative locations, the damage and my options. We select the "Hail Mary" play - one DD and the Lexington are set to direct, absolute and destination Tokyo (a little early but what the hell) and all other forces are set to run back to pearl as if they were tying to dodge the KB and save the Lexington. It does not go well for the decoy forces as both CA and Two DDs are lost of the next day or so. The Lexington and her lone DD sail without being spotted. The KB also smashes the landing task force so the Coastal AA Regiment does not make it ashore.

The Enterprise and Saratoga are ordered to ambush the two CV's of the KB in the Christmas Islands at Maximum speed. They were 18 hexes from Christmas Island.

Day 4
The decoy force breaks contact. The Lexington is turned north to start its famous run to Dutch Harbor and then to the Bremerton Shipyard. The Enterprise and Saratoga end up un-deteded and eight hexes from the two CV's split from the KB.

As the KB in in route south to these carriers and these two CV's are in route north the Enterprise and Saratoga are ordered to bomb Christmas Island and then retire to San Diego. Sooooo Close but such is life.

Conclusion
The good news is that we still hold Wake, added a marine defense battalion and its has a bunch of supplies. The Lexington is safe and repairing. It also appears from conversations with AirGriff he thinks he got the Lady Lex so it will be fun to read his e-mail when she shows back up and does something nasty to him. He also does not know how close we came to a 2 on 2 CV battle in January of 1942 where I would have gotten in the 1st strike an Allied Players wet dream. The losses, three DDs, two CA, one CL, two xAK, two xAPs.

So the Question is I am wining or Losing???

So he keeps sending the KB right at my land based and and 1/3 of the time catching task forces unloading, the loss of the tankers is not cool but I am losing or wining with losses like this?

The loos of 41 Planes this turn alone from the KB after all of the other losses has to be hurting his Pilot quality or am I am wrong?

Samoa and Fiji

It appears as if there is a landing about to occur at Fiji. I have about 20 Vincent's I's that I will throw at it plus ~20 Hudson's. From what I will move two NZ Battalions to reinforce Nadi but the rest of the LCU's will hold Suva. I don't see from just what he is sending he has enough to evict me but I am open to any input.

At Pago Pago I am looking at setting the B-26's to 15000 naval bombing at six hexes (for fighter cover) and hoping he stays out of Range. There are more LCU's, Supplies and Fuel in route to help hold these Suva and Pago Pago. I am just not sure he can take them Suva with the forces I see right now. This also assumes the DM DM ADP ADP ADP DMS DMS TK TK --- is an invasion force and those are AKs and not TKs.

Palembang

This is going to fall this turn, and I want to bomb it from Batavia (7 hexes) with the Dutch air force in two days (we are using two day turns). Can I assume I have to wait till it falls and select City Attack and then Palembang?

Incoming round.

I tend to spill my coffee when I recce a base that is supposed to be empty and see a report "5 units, x,xxxtroops, 50 guns". What it should say is, "day late and a dollar short, sucker."

AirGriff

LOL. Well I am just trying to be a good host to any Japanese tourists that may want to visit. Unfortunately, all I could find for a wait staff at short of notice were these marines but they do at least have those snazzy uniforms.

The sign we have been hanging is "go back to your historical perimeter" and "venture forth at your own peril" but all we could find were these guys with the snazzy uniforms instead.
