ORIGINAL: Ur_Vile_WEdge The problem is, if you don't double-stack, then the Germans will likely just mow over your units. Especially on the suprrise impulse where the Soviets can't give defensive ground support, the Germans will skip groundstriking, use ground support if necessary, and do a lot of high odds attacks all across the board, killing your guys and driving you back. The key is to have enough force together that he has a reasonable chance of flipping some units to attack you, otherwise, the advance just continues on and on and on. That's indeed how it is done. The best way for the USSR is to trade space for time. And doing this doesn't exactly mean "Run, you fools". It means to be willing to make sure the Germans need to attack cities which take time for them to take. Certain cities you need to defend properly (Leningrad, Sevastopol, Rostov) since they provide excellent defensive positions. Other cities you put in a "token" defense. Two corps (usually worse ones) which Germany can't put out of supply and are simply in the way, blocking important raillines so the Germans need to attack those cities and need to use valuable units which can't race further along the line. Make sure your HQ's survive and the valuable ARM too. Build GAR, INF and MIL only to throw troops in the German advance and rail move the factories out to Siberia. Ask, no demand resources from the Western Allies (be like Uncle Joe. Scream that the Western nations aren't giving you enough resources to fight the Nazi's and you are taking all the casualties). Also, don't forget to defend behind rivers, until those lines are breached. Than run to the next river line (or marsh hex line) and stop those Germans again for a while. There are two area's the USSR can't afford the lose. That's the Caucasus where the oil is and the part roughly north and east of the Kaspian Sea. The rest, you can give away slowly to the Germans. It's amazing how fast the USSR can return from the Caucasus and Siberia towards Germany in late game...
