Axis 3rd Impulse:

Land Combat (continued):
The 2nd attack is on the far south end of the front, outside of Odessa, captured by the Axis last impulse. Two units that had retreated from the 1st impulse were in this hex along with a 3-3 MIL falling back. Earlier in the impulse, the Axis attempted to disrupt this last unit but was unsuccessful. Russia declines sending its last fighter on CAP over this battle, but the Axis sends one bomber adding 4 pts of ground support. The ratio is just under 5 to 1 with a modifier of +12.556. Russia picks the blitz table. Germany does not get the fractional but rolls an 11, for 23 overall. Germany converts this to a retreat, still hoping to get some overrun possibilities on the defenders later in the turn. USSR chooses to destroy the Infantry DIV and the MIL unit.

Axis 3rd Impulse:

Land Combat (continued):
The 3rd attack, the most important one for the Axis, is on the Northern front, on a weak point in the middle of the Soviet line. Ground strikes prepared the battlefield, and the Soviets contributed 3 pts to Ground support. The Axis declined any ground support on their end due to the high modifier already there. The modifier ends up being +13.333, and the Axis picks the Blitz table. With four of Germany's strongest units, they do not get the fractional, but manage to roll a 10, for a 23 overall. This gives them a breakthrough as well, and they place their white print 9-6 ARM corps through the line. With Pskov effectively encircled, the Soviets will likely have to pull back towards the East.

Allies 4th Impulse:
Axis rolls a 5 to end the turn, so it still goes on and passes control to the Allies.

Weather:
Roll of 9, Fine everywhere. Allies will have a decision to try to end turn by passing or let Russia pull back. With only a 50% even if they all pass, they will likely have to let the USSR go at least. Plus the French want to try to capture Mogadishu. Viva la France!

Only 1 attack this impulse, in Mogadishu, where the French are trying to luck their way into a victory. With shore bombardment they get 8:3 ratio, for a +4.333 modifier. They get the fractional, but roll a 7!

Very interesting war so far.

How much strength can the Allies get ashore in Southern France? Do they have enough to land enough troops to credibly hold a solid area against determined German counterattacks which will likely materialize fairly quickly?

I do understand that its hard to trick yourself, but still, this has been a very interesting AAR. I look forward to seeing whagt happens, especially in Russia.

The allies will have likely 5 to 6 corps including Montgomery. With heavy carrier presence and a lot of aircraft nearby they'll be able to establish air parity at least and likely air superiority, I think the axis will not be able to push them off the beach and with the many transports the allies have they'll be able to bring in troops from morocco quickly to exploit any success

Since there are so few defenders in Spain and France, attack. Six corps is enough to make a strong beachhead...

I agree with Centuur, and hope you do attack. It should be interesting to see what develops from such a unique situation.

Ground Strike:
Germany uses their tank buster to try and ground strike the defenders of Pskov. The Stuka gets 2 dice when rolling against the Soviet armor unit.

Axis 4th Impulse:

Land Movement:
Germany maneuvers to get a couple of key attacks, while also starting to pull out of Morocco, and let the Italians man the line. The Italians also tighten up their line pulling back one hex. The Axis will leave two HQs (1 Italian, 1 German) in Africa while Von Bock moves to Gibraltar.

With the Allies not landing more troops when they had the opportunity, and troops moving to ports in the UK, the Axis thinks something may be up and decide to start looking at their current European defense and adjust.

Here is the situation in Western Europe.

Axis 4th Impulse:

Land Combat:
The Axis is declaring several land combats. In Russia they are attacking Pskov, Kiev, and the Ukranian port of Nikolayev. In Egypt, the last CW unit is surrounded and attacked. Also, Japan takes a crack at the defenders around Vladivostok.

Here's the attacks in Russia to get a little context...

Axis 4th Impulse:

Land Combat (continued):
The 1st attack is on Kiev. Russia uses a ARTY to add to the defenders, lowering the modifier to +9.222. USSR also picks the Blitz table to keep units on the map. Germany does not get the fractional, but rolls a 13, for 22 overall. The 2-1 GAR is destroyed and the 4-2 MIL retreats, as Germany converts to a retreat.

Axis 4th Impulse:

Land Combat (continued):
The 2nd attack is on Nikolayev, and two disrupted Soviet units. These were both retreats from previous impulses and the Axis is looking to kill them vs. shattering them. USSR picks the Blitz table, its been working for them so far. Germany does not get the fractional, and rolls a 9, for 17 overall. The Soviet units live once again and retreat once again, while the Axis has another two units disrupted.

Axis 4th Impulse:

Land Combat (continued):
The 3rd and riskiest attack is by the Japanese, in their first attack on Soviet forces. Low modifier of +4.778 here, Japan just hoping for a retreat to push the Soviets back. USSR picks the Blitz table, and Japan gets the fractional and rolls a 12, for 17 again. Soviet retreat again. The problem here is that they don't have a lot of room to go to.

The 5th and final attack is on the surrounded units in Pskov. Nowhere to retreat so USSR picks the Assault table, hoping to take some of the Axis units with them. Nope, Germany rolls a 12, for 23 overall. Both units destroyed.

This game is getting interesting, with so the balance ready to go one way or the other, with room to swing back. I have to go back to the beginning and reread this from the beginning to refresh myself with how things unfolded.

Allies 5th Impulse:
The Axis rolled a 9, turn did not end. This is now the 5th go-round for the Allies.

Weather:
Roll of 4, Fine everywhere but N. Monsoon (Rain)

Actions:
The Allies, if they all pass, will be a 70% of the turn end. USSR does not want to pass, and won't. France will pass. US and CW will not pass because the Allies don't want the turn to end, after all. If it does, since the Allies went first, the Axis will get a +2 initiative modifier next turn.

USSR - Land
CW - Land
US - Land
Fr - Pass

Allies 5th Impulse:

Ground Strikes:
Just to see what would happen, the US uses ARTY on two hexes in Morocco, with aircraft on the ground, maybe they'll get lucky.

The 1st Strike does well, disrupting two land units and 1 air.

Axis 5th Impulse:

Land Combat:
4 attacks this impulse, all in Russia. 3 by Germany, 1 by Japan.

The 1st attack is the last hex on the west side of the Dnieper. The USSR didnt want to lose another fighter stranded on the ground, so they left a couple of units on top of it. The Germans want to clear the banks of the Dnieper and will use Guderian's HQ support in what will likely be the last impulse of the turn. Koniev also contributes defensive HQ support, leaving the modifier at a +7.2 modifier on the blitz table, which is what the Germans pick.

Germany doesnt get the fractional but rolls a 14, for 21 overall. The USSR units are shattered and will return next turn. However, a FTR on the ground is lost.

Axis 5th Impulse:

Land Combat (continued):
The 2nd attack is near Vladivostok. The USSR didnt want to pull back out of the mountain hexes, and their most vulnerable hex was only attackable from 1 hexside. The Japanese checked the odds, and the three retreated units from last impulse, all disrupted, gave a very attractive +8.7 modifier on the Blitz table, which Japan decided to give a try on.

Japan gets the fractional, but only rolls a 8, for 17 overall. Japan really wanted a breakthrough but didnt get it, instead the USSR units must retreat again.

EDIT: Some solace is found in that the two northern most hexes of the Soviet line are now OOS, after the Japanese chose to retreat the defenders to the northeast away from their only supply center.
