One thing I don't like is the ability to target heroes in melee. It seems like if you are going to use the combat shift (or maybe the firepower), then maybe it makes sense to allow it, but an option should be provided that will permit you to avoid having the hero become the subject of the attack. (Either by foregoing the firepower or the shift).

This becomes a huge issue in the campaign, when you discover that promoting Wurtz or Yakov to hero-status actually paints a big target on their back!

No way man! Don't you take away my targeting of heroes. That's one of the best ways to get rid of them in a melee.

For the campaigns, don't take those special leaders into melee, they are too important for that.

I gotta agree with barth..dont take your freakn, lose the scenario if they die, leaders into melee (unless the entire scenario is lost if you dont). That leader must survive. I've had over 1000 melees so far and unless you can lose every single unit that goes into a melee...dont send them in. I've seen initial 5:1 odds where the AI kills my entire stack by killing one unit each turn for three turns straight.

Melee targeting is broken imho,
- attacker should not be able to target SMCs
- attacker should be forced to divide attacks as much as possible, ie only be able to target a unit twice if it has already been targeted once...

This and spotting rules are the 2 things which should be changed...

PDiFolco, those things are integral to the game design, so I wouldn't hold my breath. Of course, you could pick up the actual board game, and house rule it to your heart's content. I do that myself. I leave the spotting as is, though.

If you don't like the spotting rules, why do you play the game? It's the heart of the game, and what seperates it from other squad level games. It's what makes this particular squad level board game work, even though you have perfect information. Sure, they could implement regular fog-of-war rules instead for the computer game, but squad level games that do that are a dime a dozen already, so why bother? Let this one be the one true implementation of a board game we have. :)

As for the melee rules, I think they work fine as they are. If you bring a valuable hero, you take a risk. In real life you would have to divide your attacks, but letting the attacker choose is a reasonable abstraction, and makes the game more interesting and less fiddly, IMO.

you can only have two heros at a time...might as well get them killed off in a productive way. So you can get more heros.

Exactly. Heroes are not for saving.... They're for doing heroic things.
