July 1861. The balloon’s gone up. We are at war.

If any of the bleeding heart politicians in Washington still thought this could all get resolved in a civil and diplomatic manner, he's been proven decisively wrong.

Our forces are spread out all over the country, the chain of command is practically nonexistant, all the brigades are underequipped, some have old smoothbore muskets. Some don't even have that. The only good thing is that the rebels aren't doing any better than we are. Still, they already proved to have a competennt staff, while our generals seem not to be good at enything, exept eating peanuts and smoking cigars.

I have carefully instructed the units over the Potomac to move back into Maryland, as the army neds to be thoroughly reorganized. Sadly, Bobby Lee (who at this point seems to be in charge of the rebs in the area) had other plans. They have intercepted McDowell's boys at Manassas and there was no way of avoiding this one.

Just a few months after the rebels fired upon fort Sumter, a great battle had occured. We lost over 8000 men, Lee lost over 7000.

In this single battle, more americans have died than throuought the entire war against Mexico. We are certainly seeing the elephant now.

Seems the forum rules changed and I can't upload images or links for some time.

Wierd, I remember vividly putting up links for my Carriers at War mods. Guess this will have to wait a week.
